What else do you Collect?, by gibbin82 on Jun 8, 2011 23:01:57 GMT 1, Glad I am not the only one with a problem. Unusual I know, but my other passion is medieval illuminated manuscripts. Nothing printed. Most of mine range in date from 1250 to 1500. Not religious at all, but just find them beautiful, and get a thrill from realising that they were being read so many hundreds of years ago, and putting it into historical conext eg time of joan of arc, before Shakespear etc.... A couple of examples - these are very small and on vellum. Look great with a Banksy!
They are beautiful Coach, thanks for sharing them with us. The skill and work that went into these is incredible not only for the person who illustrated and wrote them but those who also prepared the velum, also makes me think that even if it had not been in Latin but been in the current version of English almost everybody who saw them would still not have a clue what was written but would have been amazed at the beauty of these manuscripts. I will possibly visit Lindisfarne this weekend, now if I see some thing similar would you like me to pick it up for you ;D

Blimey - glad you like them. These two are just a fraction of the collection. Have manuscripts that vary in size, style amd origin, from French, German, Italian, and one very old English.

What else do you Collect?, by Coach on Jun 8, 2011 23:07:40 GMT 1, Gibbin, go for it mate. You might have to leg it when the alarms start going off though!
I also have some very large hand written and illuminated choir books - large so choristers at the back could see! On one, there are angels painted up one margin, added in Victorian times. Others look plain at first, but on closer inspection you see that grotesques have been drawn into the letters.
Oh dear - I'm getting started...! Will stop now. This really isnt the place.

What else do you Collect?, by pezlow on Jun 10, 2011 8:38:51 GMT 1, Started off collecting stamps when I was about 8 I guess. Moved on to panini stickers. Still have the complete football 82, 83 and 84 somewhere. Throughout the 90's collected football memorabilia in particular programmes. I have a great collection of pre-war and post-war arsenal programmes.
I also collected cigarette cards - mostly with a football or cricket theme but also by one manufacturer Ardath
I've always loved art but didn't really start collecting it until 2000. Wish I'd started earlier.

Those books were the sh1t! It was like Dungeons and Dragons without all the faffing about. Don't say you never turned the page then went back when you got killed??? Didn't do warhammer but did those 25mm lead figures (health n' safety in the 80's!)

connecta it kinda hurts to part with them, but as you say moving kills. Last time i did it i was in a fourth floor flat and had another one of the big expedit shelves in the first picture also rammed. At that point their fate was well and truely sealed.

What else do you Collect?, by connecta1 on Jun 11, 2011 0:13:31 GMT 1, ...my next move is imminent, 4-6 weeks. My missus' solution is to 'just chuck 'em', but you can't just lob them away blindly. Sure, there is an awful load of sh1te in there, but they all meant something to me at the time I bought them in on way or another.
Only answer is to have a proper listen and sort the wheat from the chaff... guess how I'm spending my Friday night?
Could be worse... heigh-ho!

What else do you Collect?, by misterx on Jun 11, 2011 5:17:59 GMT 1, firstly stamps, then coins, Guinness Book of Records(given one every year by Santa...), football programmes, autographs, vinyl, then CD's then nothing till two years ago when in London bought a t shirt with an Obey motif on...
Thats when my finances(which were never crash-hot) took a dive...
having said that, I feel like I have found "my home" with Street Art/Contemporary Art.
Shooting heroin apparently makes the user "feel at home" ... I can see the parallels.
Coach, thanks for sharing your manuscripts...they really are beautiful. I know what you mean about sensing how steeped in history they must be...some of my older coins gave me that very same feeling!
