What else do you Collect?, by Sliding on the Walls on Jun 8, 2011 15:41:53 GMT 1, Before I got into buying art prints, I was a DJ and used to buy techno/trance and generally all things 'acid' & 'boom-she boom-she' sounding. I'd discover a record label, let's say for example 'Routemaster records' and would make it my mission to collect every single one of the releases (with some reaching very high prices).
It was an expensive hobby.
Then I got into buying art prints, with my first purchase being Happy Choppers by Banksy - an artist I had come across from spending my uni years in Bristol. I bought the unsigned print for ยฃ70 or thereabouts on ebay, and at the time I felt a little bit sick that I had spent so much money on a piece of paper. Living in Bristol exposed me to other artists like Mr Jago, Will Barras, China Mike and thus sprouted my art collection.
It was/is an expensive hobby.
I, like most of us I'd imagine, got to a point where I'd filled all my frames with pictures and had to buy a portfolio. So in would go more prints which now only see the light of day when I add another one to the set. In fact it's so full now I will need to buy more sleeves if I continue to buy any prints.
Instead of buying prints I've saved up my pennies and begun to buy originals, spending the kind of money that the me of 10 years ago would have thought was absolutely rediculous. I'm not talking mega bucks, but ยฃ1,000 is a lot of money to me - just shy of a months wage.
It is an expensive hobby!
Why do we do this? Why buy prints that we know are not going to make the wall unles we buy bigger houses - which we'll never be able to afford because we spend so much money on our collections?
Do you collect anything other than art? Before you collected art did you have a collection that now is sitting on a shelf, and not being added to? Are we habitual collectors? Is there something in our fibres that means we have to focus on collecting something regardless of what it is?
I mean, I get no interest whatsoever from looking at trains but I bet I get the same feeling a trainspotter gets when the latest *insert artist name here* is announced. So maybe we're not that different?

What else do you Collect?, by jamesreeve5 on Jun 8, 2011 15:51:10 GMT 1, I collected comic books and trading cards back in the early 90s. I can remember the excitement of going to the comic book store with my weekly $20 - $40 I'd get from mowing neighbors' lawns.

First it was lights, then chairs and now art. Have not progressed to wife's yet but if I keep up this shockingly selfish behavior than that one may be enforced upon me.... ;D

Edit: and of course, I always have to have the whole collection of weapons, items, etc in videogames (proud memory: I had all the sets in Diablo!!)

What else do you Collect?, by fielder on Jun 8, 2011 18:30:36 GMT 1, I ran out of wall space quite a while ago and now I collect art toys which is just as addictive, if not more so. There are some incredible toys out there that I think would appeal to people on here. For example, here's some figures I have by artists Chris Ryniak, Kathie Olivas and Doktor A:-

What else do you Collect?, by Coach on Jun 8, 2011 22:47:26 GMT 1, Glad I am not the only one with a problem.
Unusual I know, but my other passion is medieval illuminated manuscripts. Nothing printed. Most of mine range in date from 1250 to 1500. Not religious at all, but just find them beautiful, and get a thrill from realising that they were being read so many hundreds of years ago, and putting it into historical conext eg time of joan of arc, before Shakespear etc....
A couple of examples - these are very small and on vellum.
Look great with a Banksy!
