TOTTENHAM RIOTS, by xmyart on Aug 8, 2011 23:55:29 GMT 1, George, im not attempting to justify it. But to point out it has started and gone off so quick due to the social problems and forces that precede it. We all have a past mate. live by the sword, yeah i promise you, i get that thanks. Knock Knock:)

TOTTENHAM RIOTS, by warsaw project on Aug 9, 2011 0:03:56 GMT 1, Perhaps you need to read the thread again, because that's exactly the way you come across. something tells me this is the first time you have been able to put your degree to work, good for you!!! Live in your world mate, where no-one takes responsibility for there actions, its the same city i grew up in 20 years ago, having come from a council estate yourself, and going to university you should know better than anyone that life is what you make it, no-one from my school (Clapham) made it to university yet myself and at least 7 of my friends i keep in touch with from the same class all have good business's of our own. By the way, you would be perfect in government...! Read more: urbanartassociation.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=chat&thread=86348&page=5#ixzz1UTpCBWLzyour points are lopst on me mate. Your first is far from right. your second re nobody accepting responsibility in my world is just proving you have completly misunderstood most of my posts. Going to uni just helped me get a better grip on seeing the bigger picture, and i dont think you have that. Life is not always what you make it. It is sometimes not possible to transcend social barriers. the haves and the have nots has already been mentioned. Its just a small part of a big big picture.
Im not surprised, its not the first time in this thread you have used the line (im lost)
Ill explain it to you, no problem. Was merely making the point that when i grew up the situation was much the same, at least it was for me on lavender hill, no prospects,s**t schooling, and a family skint. It didnt stop myself (you going to university) and some of my friends from making a reasonable success of our lives. Hence the point life is what you make it, trust me I was poor.
you seem intent on blaming the whole situation on I quote:- social demographics, disinchanted youth, disenfranchised youth, unemployment, poor social control, nature and nurture issues

Utter b*llocks….. Its pure and simply a bunch of thiefs/chavs who are communicating through the associated gangs to pillage as much as they can and fight the police....

TOTTENHAM RIOTS, by xmyart on Aug 9, 2011 0:17:11 GMT 1, ok, so your story and my story, they are going to be the exact same for the whole of the rest of society are they? NO of course not. you and me and many others like us, are without doubt the exception to the rule, we dont prove it.
Would you be describing them as Chavs if they were all out working and being like the rest of the average make up of society? NO. Would they be out and rioting if they werent effected by the problems you mention? NOPE, they would most likely be sitting in doors watching it on TV like us, wishing it wasnt happening.

I find it interesting that you on the one hand claim that we should open our eyes to the fact that these riots are caused by social structures which people are locked inside, while on the other hand you're using your university degree to claim a superior position to those participating in the debate who are without such formal education.

TOTTENHAM RIOTS, by Wearology on Aug 9, 2011 0:25:07 GMT 1, On behalf of all the forum members that do not live in the U.K please be careful if you chose to get involved with the riot. I was involved in a riot in College and things can get hairy in a split second - people thought it was cool to throw rocks at an ambulance and throw a cop out of a window. The American media is showing a lot of buildings and cars on fire. Please please please be careful I have no idea why people are rioting but think to yourself if this is a cause worth risking your life for. Peace and love from New York City.

Your just asking rhetorical questions now to which you have kindly answered in your usual manner...
Agree to disagree mate, we will never find common ground on this issue.... To me they are robbing pure and simple, if they wanted to demonstrate a march and battering the houses of Parliament would have surely been a better route, but you cant get a free TV, new phone or shiny pair of trainers in there so no one is bothered.
Have learnt a valuable lesson to tonight, i will stick to art topics from now on :-)

I would argue with Bourdieu that formal education is a form of social capital and that by pointing to yours, you are in fact (consciously or unconsciously) trying to claim a superior position.
You also do this very directly in the statement I quoted above: "Going to uni just helped me get a better grip on seeing the bigger picture, and i dont think you have that."

TOTTENHAM RIOTS, by xmyart on Aug 9, 2011 0:46:16 GMT 1, so anyone that shares what they know, does it for social status.
that statement related to one person and was directly aimed at the point that they think this is all about trainers etc.
Is you GP on the big up? Or did they want to help people?
Youd be amazed as to just how unconcerned i am about how im viewed, as far as status is concerned. My life has been a mish mash of all kinds of strange experiences.

Its the way you go about it! Picking up on the trainers is just low, i made a load of other points relating to your so called social injustice.
Take a look at the business that have been targeted, do you see any government buildings on fire? Or is it all mobile phone shops, camera shops department stores, bookmakers?? Would kind of imply they are out to rob.... Well at least it suggests this to me.
