Don't put "Banksy" if your item is NOT BANKSY!!!, by Ågent ßacardi on Oct 9, 2006 3:47:47 GMT 1, Anyone else annoyed over Martin Thompson (ebay username mgtphoto) plugging "Banksy" in the name of his paintings when they have absolutely NOTHING whatsoever to do with Banksy? Not just one listing at a time, mind you. His works aren't bad at all, but his advertising tactics just bug the crap out of me. GRRRR.

Don't put "Banksy" if your item is NOT BANKSY!!!, by mido on Oct 9, 2006 14:40:51 GMT 1, I thinks it's actually 'illegal' on ebay and they often remove listings like that.
I'm also a big Jimmy cauty fan and sellers often add 'banksy, hirst....' etc etc on item listings. If I've bid on an item I often get messages from ebay saying the listing has been taken of as it breaches policy (title spamming).....

Don't put "Banksy" if your item is NOT BANKSY!!!, by Curley on Oct 9, 2006 15:54:21 GMT 1, Its bugs the hell out of me too if it aint Banksy why put it there. I'm also really bugged by profiteers selling the poster of mulitiple soup cans that can still be bought as its an unlimited litho poster for £9.99 and copies of Cut It Out which are still on sale for £4.99 at POW.

Great idea! I'll send him an email too!!
And yeah, the soup can posters and "Cut it Out" pisses me off too. "Pictures of Walls" too, which goes for only £5 on POW. And oh, how about this new one from Peg Entwistle:
cgi.ebay.com/BANKSY-LIKE-Gay-theme-art-print-British-Police-kisses_W0QQitemZ130035309586QQihZ003QQcategoryZ20148QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
It's basically the Kissing Coppers image with the words "Hanky Panky" put on. Listing reads: "For Sale - This very Banksy inspired print". It wasn't "inspired", it was COPIED! All this person did was add the words!!
Makes my blood boil!!

Don't put "Banksy" if your item is NOT BANKSY!!!, by gm on Oct 9, 2006 19:45:38 GMT 1, Deep breaths, agent b!
Console yourself with the thought that if anyone is daft enough to pay money for that lovely print they probably deserve it.

That's true ;D
But still, it's sad whenever someone is gypped by some con person. And in Banksy's name, no less!! I wish there were some way we could report bogus listings to eBay and subsequently have them removed. (wait, is there?)

Tell me about it C/Agent B , The bloke who currently claims Cut it Out is out of print, and proceeds to list 10 copies of it at differing prices. And the theiving barsteward sold one for £35 in the last few weeks. On one hand I say good luck to the bloke, but it gets my goat to think I'll get ripped off the same, or a mate will. Am all up for questions to the seller being more accesible by everyone viewing an item.
And that kissing cops thing is ridiculous!!

Don't put "Banksy" if your item is NOT BANKSY!!!, by alexblanchard on Oct 9, 2006 21:10:09 GMT 1, Hello, I have sold quite a few Cut It Out's, Banging Your Head Against A Brick Wall and Existencilism books on eBay (along with a couple of Soup Can prints and some limited edition prints).
I feel the same way as many of you in some respects, should I 'profit' of someone I really do admire like this? - The way I look at it is; if they knew Banksy and his works they would be fully aware that POW sell these books and prints for a lot less - I get a few questions asking 'am I taking the piss' - NO, Art is a very profitable business - POW makes a fortune, Laz makes a fortune and Banksy - well he f*cked off to America.
I have been a Banksy fan for about 3 years now I own about 7 prints - none of which I would sell (unless I needed to). I only buy and sell prints from POW so I can buy even more for myself.
Hope I havn't ranted too long or pissed to many people off (some good posts on these forums) - And back to your origional post I have used 'Like Banksy' and 'Banksy stablemate on POW'...
Thank You.

Don't put "Banksy" if your item is NOT BANKSY!!!, by alexblanchard on Oct 9, 2006 21:58:00 GMT 1, Ha ha, I am I safe to visit Stolen Space? or should I take some protection (wrap my self in some virgin mary's)
- c'mon how many of you, if in LA would buy a print you didn't like? - just because it was a Banksy or because you knew it was a safe investment.
I never buy prints I don't like and I would never sell anyone something that I did not believe was worth the price tag placed on it.
Thanks again, and please understand I like to debate not argue.

Yeah, I love that one as well, but was disappointed that it looked nowhere like the canvas, color-wise. It's a neat concept, though.
(Notice how I distracted the thread away from alexblanchard's potentially-controversial post?) ;D
(No offense to you whatsoever, alexblanchard)

Don't put "Banksy" if your item is NOT BANKSY!!!, by mltimer on Oct 9, 2006 23:35:58 GMT 1, I used to sell CDs on ebay and then buy from Amazon and have Amazon deliver them direct to the winning punter. I always thought I was taking the p**s, but nobody complained.
I don't think your doing anything wrong. Supply and demand. Put Banksy into google and POW come up straight away.

Don't put "Banksy" if your item is NOT BANKSY!!!, by mido on Oct 10, 2006 2:44:51 GMT 1, For me the big difference is if people lie - e.g. saying 'sold out' when they are not sold out. that's the biggie for me. That is wrong.
By the by - Banksy has done loads of street work this year in UK, and the paris Hilton CDs were here, so I can't agree with people who bang on about him going to America. I bet most of us have been abroad this year at some point ;D

Don't put "Banksy" if your item is NOT BANKSY!!!, by Ågent ßacardi on Oct 10, 2006 4:44:39 GMT 1, Personally, what I can't stand are people who call themselves 'fans' and sell everything Banksy they've got for cold hard cash. Basically, they're ONLY into Banksy for the money. If you're a Banksy fan and you've got many of his works, and maybe you discover you don't like a print so much, then it's perfectly fine to sell it. You use the money to perhaps procure other Banksy works.
But there's quite a lot of people out there (I met them during the LA show) who have never even heard of Banksy before the whole "Cruelty to Elephants" fiasco. They show up, they buy the prints, and not even 8 hours later, they put it on eBay. What they've done is taken opportunities away from other true Banksy fans, and to me, it's practically a crime against humanity. They basically make use of Banksy's fame for their own profit. That's not really profiting off art... that's profiting off other people's misfortunes. (The misfortune being running into them, of course)
Once, I saw a listing on eBay - I think it was a print - the seller, of course, hyped it up with the usual "RARE! LIMITED! SOLD OUT!" pitch. And then he/she said something like "Up for auction is this book by famed British artist Banksy, also known as GORDON BANKS". And then he/she provided a URL to Gordon Banks' biography.
These are the people who should be shot, methinks. Can't you at least do a little research??

That's not really profiting off art... that's profiting off other people's misfortunes. (The misfortune being running into them, of course) Once, I saw a listing on eBay - I think it was a print - the seller, of course, hyped it up with the usual "RARE!

Don't put "Banksy" if your item is NOT BANKSY!!!, by Ågent ßacardi on Oct 17, 2006 16:37:26 GMT 1, Lord, they're hideous!
I'm a big Banksy fan, but any self-respecting girl who wears these things should seriously be shot for the good of this world.

Don't put "Banksy" if your item is NOT BANKSY!!!, by Daniel Silk on Oct 19, 2006 18:31:08 GMT 1, Im not sure about this I dont mind it
You get graffiti artists that are trying to get known putting "like Banksy" and I think good luck to them! ;D if they can start to build up a following from it, I cant see that Banksy would mind. Also it can get us all looking at other artists that we might not have found before ;D

Don't put "Banksy" if your item is NOT BANKSY!!!, by trowel on Oct 19, 2006 18:45:38 GMT 1, Good point Silky - I've seen a couple of decent pieces appear on eBay recently tagged with Banksy, which I otherwise wouldn't have seen. Nothing wrong with a bit of fake tagging to stand out on eBay in my view. At the right time of year I usually stick Ideal Valentines Day/Christmas/Easter Present! etc. on my auctions and it drives the traffic like you wouln't believe!!
