WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by atomone on Jan 9, 2012 16:11:40 GMT 1, is this the framer on brick lane? The same thing happened to me with a grafter i had him frame, he ended up buying the piece from me...
No he's in the Hackney area...
Still don't know where I stand at the moment...went along with the framer to the guy who mounted it and he has suggested steaming it off!...I will judge it once that has been done and if i'm not happy with it then I will have to sort it out with them...he said that he wouldn't have stuck it down in the same way???...basically his assistant bodged it and now he has to get them out of the sh*t!
The framer had a lot of pieces being prepared for framing...LIITA, NBG and CYW to name but a few...hope he doesn't make the same mistake with those ones?...
I'm still in shock to be fair!!

WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by ilmambo on Jan 9, 2012 16:23:47 GMT 1, I think you should really name the framer. what happened to you shouldn't happen EVER, hopefully (for others) yours was the only case, a mistake made by an assistant irrespective of his (and yours) work, but still you should name him so people who used him in the past or will use him in the future will take any necessary precaution to avoid a shame like yours.
I hope you'll be able to sort it out...

WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by maumau93 on Jan 9, 2012 16:23:49 GMT 1, you seen if its water soluble yet? If it is it will take the signature off with it surely as that is only painted on...there is noway that that signature can avoid being affected, the piece isn't heavy and so glue dots or acid free double sided in the corners would have been absolutely fine...one hour till I find out how this shoddy workmanship happened...
wouldn't necessarily take it off depending on what paint was used i thought it looked like an acrylic (which i think is typically oil based)

WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by atomone on Jan 9, 2012 17:18:50 GMT 1, The main front of the piece is acrylic and oil, as for the signature I don't know what medium was used...could be either or something different...either way it suks! If that stuff comes off, and looks ok ish, I can't help thinking that it ain't how it left the artist and is now damaged in the process...why should I just be cool with that and walk away with it?

WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by iamzero on Jan 9, 2012 19:12:33 GMT 1, Not pleasant pictures fella, I can't help thinking of all the prints coming out of Nelly Duff that could have been in there and potentially ruined and people are none the wiser.
Looks like my gut instincts are right about framing my own work. No trade secrets from what I can make out... just common sense and research.
Good luck dude.

Why prints from Nelly? Does Cassius use these guys?

Hi jevon, Not sure who or what the story is with this framer. But Nelly has nothing to do with them.
Hopefully whoever the framer is, they are honorable and will make good, best of luck, cassius

Atomone, i feel for you, you have obviously ended up on the bad end of something through no fault of your own, however, i can't help but think there must be something that you are not being told. Graham is one of the best restorers and conservators in the business. Many of us have him to thank for rescuing valuable pieces. I cannot imagine that this would be their work...

He's offered to pay for it...I don't know it's worth as I won it in an auction...I literally heard from the artist today and he has kindly offered to re-sign it for me...it may sound petty to some but it's the principle of it! Graham was rude to be honest and because his pride was damaged he even said that because he was going to have to pay for it, he would not be mounting my other pieces that were there waiting to be mounted! that was the final nail in the coffin as far as i'm concerned! Never experienced such a bad customer service from any company, let alone one that you should be able to trust with your prized possessions.
Shame...had a lot of pieces lined up for him as well...so if anyone knows of a decent framer in the east end area then please let me know...

Cheers adamk, I am really gutted coz I know he has a good reputation and the guy that frames his mounted work is gutted by this too as I can't use either of them now which is bad all round, I am genuinely shocked by not only the result but the attitude that he had at something that was totally his and his teams fault.
Graham admitted that he wouldn't have mounted the piece like it was and that it was done by one of his team! It was obviously passed over to one of his team and they chucked a load of PVA on it without him overseeing it and that was that! I know his rep is good but I sadly won't be able to echo that as this has been the worst service I have ever experienced. Thankfully it ain't an Andy Warhol signature eh...

WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by speebe on Jan 26, 2012 1:13:26 GMT 1, atomone....s**t... what's more shocking than a paper restorers team mounting the work like that is their attitude toward you after they'd been caught with their pants down... They should be doing everything in their power to placate you and redeem themselves!
Well that's going to cause ripples.....!

Really feel for you mate, clearly its his and his teams fault, and to hear you then get some bad attitude from them when it is clearly their fault is insane. Had some work that was gonna be heading to his studio soon to have some restoration done, i will be looking into a different restorer i think.....

WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by balibob on Jan 26, 2012 15:02:35 GMT 1, I wouldn't use a framer who outsources any part of the process as they cannot guarantee the quality of the work. Unfortunately their are bad framing company's out there, a friend of mine had 9 Eelus prints framed by a particular company only to find out a while later that they all had been drymounted. The framers insurance wouldn't pay out as it was deemed negligence.

WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by mayhem on Jan 26, 2012 15:03:10 GMT 1, This is terrible, was reading this thread last night. Due to another thread about 'smoking near prints' and some good advice given. I removed my Rene gagnon Monkey see, Monkey (1/3-AP sent from Rene)from a wall I was concerned about, took it out of the frame to replace with a less valuable (to me) print by Rene. The framer has stuck the COA to the back of the print with glue! nice touch buy a professional framer. I was told it was just slipped in behind the hard board when I collected it 6 months ago. What goes through their heads?? Good luck getting that one sorted atomone.

WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by Dr Plip on Jan 26, 2012 15:14:55 GMT 1, Truly some scary stories. It kinda makes you wonder about when you purchase a nicely framed print off of someone, just what has their professional framer really done behind that super duper museum glass and inert, archive-standard mounting board
Until you look, you'll never really know
Framing courses for everyone!
