WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by saint on Jan 26, 2012 16:22:48 GMT 1, Truly some scary stories. It kinda makes you wonder about when you purchase a nicely framed print off of someone, just what has their professional framer really done behind that super duper museum glass and inert, archive-standard mounting board Until you look, you'll never really know Framing courses for everyone!
I bought a print from someone not too long ago that was 'framed to museum standards', when i went to have it out the frame my framer said it looked like a child had done it. He had to do something with steam or other (i have no idea what sorry) to remove the tape, which wasn't archival standard and so would over time damage the paper. The mount was badly cut and the print was attached to this with 5 bits of tape to each side (why??), the mount didnt quite fit, so it was sellotaped to the frame! The frame itself was obviously an old frame the framer had used as it had signs it had been used before, and the edges of the glass were chipped, and not even UV protective glass, let alone museum quality glass...... All in all he said i could have framed it to better conservation standards than it was. As such, I will never purchase a framed print again, i will always have it removed first to make sure its ok.

WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by atomone on Jan 26, 2012 17:03:05 GMT 1, Quite shocked after reading this thread...... Once you have it resigned and sorted let me know mate and I will frame it free of charge for you to help ease your pain!
Wow! big respek Gary! massive thanks for offering that up and a massive thanks to everyone for their kind words! (curiousgeorge) and all the other boardies! Really does restore my faith in forums like these! Gary, I had 3 EINE pieces, 3 D*Face pieces, a Tom French and No Hope piece that were waiting to be mounted by the same idiot and his sidekick framer that I took these pieces into 3 months ago! I took them all away with me yesterday as I can't risk leaving them with these cowboys so I would love to use you to frame these pieces for me (I will happily take the re-signed piece as a freebie still ;D) but will obviously pay you for framing the other pieces...I have a lot that needs doing so will be great to use someone that knows his stuff!
As a thanks to everyone involved on this thread I will be offering a one-off cheeky little original piece by my fave artist at the mo, he knows about this situation and is doing me an edition of 10 'little' originals, 9 of which are allocated and I will have 1 spare and so will offer this up to a list of the people on this thread. The pieces haven't even been done yet so I don't know what they look like but they will be original stencils and are signed and numbered edition out of 10. Should be done in 2 weeks time as he's pretty busy at the mo...
Was going to list this thread to the whole forum but I think keep it smaller and to the people that care...share the love and all that! ;D
Thanks again boardies, will keep ya'll posted with how to go about getting the piece up for grabs...

I remember this and sad to say it's the reason I didn't chip in on framing costs, £60 all in was never going to buy you archival framing and couldn't find a polite way to tell you so.Lucky? it was on chromalux paper as I think that has a slightly glossy surface making removal of 'tape' a bit easier
Hope you put the corners to good use Mr.Fingerz

Four corners blutak sorted no hassles no paying ,ore for framing than the print costs..
As a great hero of mine the Right Honourable John Major once commented "let's get back to basics"
Blutak and drawing pins def the way forward.

That is so apt, I had my EINE stars one off framed by the same people to 'archival standard' at a price of £40, when I asked how the wood was attached to the board he said it was reversible PVA...sounded legit and professional to me...why question that?...I was told by another framer that it doesn't exist (I think it does?) but you shouldn't use it on wood apparently as you need water to get it off! Won't ever sell it so I guess it doesn't matter but I can't help looking at it and wondering what the back of it looks like?!
The problem with this service is that you choose a frame, then take your work into the framers, which then sits there for a month or more coz they can't really be bothered to deal with it, the work then gets sent to Graham Bignall and sits there for well over a month and then goes back to the framers as a mounted piece of work, then sits there again for about a month until you call them to go and pick it up only to be told that the frame that you ordered has been out of stock for 3 months...if they had bothered to order the frame when I put the order in they would have had that frame in time for it being back from Graham! Absolute shoddy workmanship!! I should name the framer really I think people who have used Graham will work it out!
Pathetic.

WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by Mister Frame Man on Jan 27, 2012 11:53:32 GMT 1, As I originally said, I was pretty shocked after reading this thread as I have always previously had positive dealings with Graham.
I have however only dealt with him for print restoration at which in my opinion he is a master! Just needs to brush up on his customer service perhaps and stay away from framing - We wouldn't attempt to restore a print.
For the framer though to outsource any framing process amazes me - EVERY print that we frame to conservation standard goes through Dale and Shaun, should they have a holiday nothing is produced. Sometimes we may let people down on return dates (not often), but we certainly wouldn't have anyone else carry out the work to speed things up! I couldn't sleep at night knowing that I had given someone's print to someone else to work on!
Atomone - Feel free to drop me an e mail once you are ready for us to collect your pieces either from home or work, we are in London every Tuesday. I would be interested to know who the framer is if you don't mind sending me a pm?
Look forward to hearing from you.
Gary

WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by saint on Jan 27, 2012 13:44:01 GMT 1, I'm amazed that a framer can take so long! if my framer says it'll take longer than a week, the piece stays at home until he can fit it in. No chance i'd leave work anywhere longer than that, i dont trust the missus with touching stuff, i'm not trusting a framer, his staff and whoever walks in the door of his shop, no way no how....
Gary, i do have something i'd like to discuss with you, you will have a pm shortly....

WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by atomone on Jan 27, 2012 16:39:32 GMT 1, The whole thing was a bad experience to be honest, I was pretty shocked when I initially asked how their process works and was told that the pieces are given to another party to mount them and then they come back to be framed, just seems too much transport going on, and they even lost a piece at one point and took them 2 weeks to call me back saying they'd found it, their pride and organisation is appaling and I am so relieved to not have to deal with them again, you should be able to take your art in and be safe in the knowledge that it's in safe hands...not with these guys!!
When I was in the framers, another guy came in and asked about his print and whether it was ready...they said not yet and that they would call him when it is (this is what I was also told week on week) and when he left I heard them say that they'd totally forgotten about it and didn't know where it was!! If it ain't all done under one roof, save yourself the time and hassle people...

WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by Andy'77 on Feb 10, 2012 13:36:39 GMT 1, I'm also pretty amazed at this. Feel for you Atomone, this kind of thing seems all too common with framers claiming to work to archival standards.
I've used Graham twice for restoring pieces and he did an amazing job each time, one was removing a Happy Chopper that had been dry mounted to cheap mount board. The resulting print is pretty much as new. He also removed a number of creases from a couple of other prints, again, a great job.
Having read through the thread, it appears to me that the framer should be accepting the vast majority of the blame, sounds like they've been flexible with the truth and it wouldn't surprise me to learn Graham was doing as they asked. Having said that, if he did different to what the framers requested when mounting then that's a different matter, but in my opinion that seems less likely.
