WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by atomone on Jan 8, 2012 23:10:58 GMT 1, Ok, here's one for you...what would you do?...I recently had a piece framed at a 'professional' framers, when it came back I didn't think the piece looked right in the frame that I chose so am getting it reframed...in the meantime I asked them how they mount the pieces and was told that they send them to someone who mounts them 'professionally' to archival standard and then it's sent back to them mounted and ready for them to frame...so I took in a postcard size piece that was painted by Robert West and was signed on the back in paint, I took the piece out of it's frame once I got it home thinking that it would simply have some acid-free tapes in the corners and to my horror the piece was infact glued down and has totally covered the signature with the black card that has been pulled away from the mount board...gutted is an understatement...what would you do? where do I stand? my worry is that I took in other pieces on Friday to get done so am gonna have to head there first thing to get those back before it's too late...the piece is absolutely ruined and the framers is a farce!...
Sorry for the rant but any advise would be gratefully received...
Here's some pics of before and after...

WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by rottenredrooster on Jan 8, 2012 23:17:55 GMT 1, What a joke, they've lied to you saying it will be done professionally to archival standard.
Quite frankly they should pay what the market value for the piece is or get it restored which seems unlikely given its state.
Hope you get it sorted but even if you get the money back for the piece, it's not the point.

WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by atomone on Jan 8, 2012 23:36:25 GMT 1, Absolutely gutted! what's more worrying is that I took a personalised D*Face piece and 3 EINE'S in on Friday!!! So hope they haven't been sent to room 101 already!! Kinda don't wanna name and shame just yet as it was an artist friend that recommended them! Will see how I feel tomorrow once I face the music...GULP!

They are based in Shoreditch East London...that's all I can say at the mo...
Real shame as they came recommended and the artist I know gets all his stuff done at the same place! Will let him know tomorrow too, and will certainly name the place tomorrow to avoid anyone else getting the same shock!

I really hope you'll be able to get some sort of reimbursement, and that it is not too late for the other pieces you took in on Fri...
knowing there are NO good framers around where I live I decided to handle things myself, and so far Im happy with that decision..
good luck!

WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by Deleted on Jan 9, 2012 2:45:48 GMT 1, Awful and ridiculously unprofessional of the framer - have all the pieces they've framed been 'fixed' in this manner? As they haven't framed them to your requirements ie. archivally, they should be liable for all damage caused.

WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by Goooogle Male on Jan 9, 2012 2:56:06 GMT 1, ...what would you do? where do I stand?
This is what you need to do mate.
First you need to inform them in writing that they've materially damaged the piece, and that it has devalued your piece. Tell them they need to notify their insurance company of this - and that you are collecting further facts re Quantum (ie, how much) and replacement feasibility. The fact it was done by a subcontractor of theirs is irrelevant for you - their insurance can pursue the mounter if they wish - not your problem.
Secondly make contact with the artist [or their gallery/management] and ask for an insurance quote for value of the piece (they are the most qualified to offer this), and also whether artist would be willing to remake the piece for that price. Looks like you've got phone/email details on the back so should be ok on this front. Either way get it in writing - you'll need it.
If you can't get any meaningful response from the artist or a representative of his, then you need to get 3 quotes in writing from different respected art valuers as to their opinion of the piece's value. the average will be the value of your claim.
Pass the written detail of the value in (either for cash or to pay the artist for remake) to the framers so they can give their insurance company (who will no doubt do the same process themselves...but if they come back with a stupid value you have your own research to contest it with).
Once you have done the above, you can demand the framer reimburse you that amount (they will be entitled to keep the piece). you do NOT need to wait for the gallery to receive money for the claim from their insurers - they may well reject it as negligence, or due to the fact it was done by a contracted third party. again, not your problem.
Unless there is no way of replacing it whatsoever (ie, point blank no to a re-make from the artist - in this circumstance you may want to accept partial damages, allowing you to retain at least the piece and therefore the image itself) - make it clear to the gallery that in your opinion the piece is damaged beyond repair as the signature is integral to its artistic and financial value. Don't let them fob you off by saying 'its only the back...'
If you want retain, you should be asking 50% of the value in recompense.
Once you've done all of that. Come here and name and shame the framers. Should be a blacklist thread on this board for this kind of stuff.

Absolutely amazing advice! thanks gooooglemate that has really helped! It's going to be interesting as a friend had a similar piece by the same artist that was framed the same as mine and that is 'ready to pick up' so will get him to open that up on the premises this morning...me thinks there will be 2 of these ruined!

Get them back immediately...dont give him another chance to ruin yet more valuable art...regardless of whether or not its been sold to you as a favour...why weren't they sent to someone who knows what they are doing in the first place...'tis hardly a favour! "Fool me once...shame on you, fool me twice , shame on me "comes to mind! Good luck mate.
Slight confusion there mate...when I said he's done me a favour, I meant in the sense that he's done me a favour by me finding out sooner than later as I have more valuable pieces that I was going to use him for so he's done me a favour in that I have found out before it's too late on the other pieces...he has never done me any favours...he has used the same guy for over 20 years and now he is even nervous about Banksy's that may have been done in the past and pieces dating back centuries like ancient scrolls etc!!
I am going along with him at lunch today to pay the mounter a visit and check out his set up and get some answers, the framer was quite shocked by what he had done and said it must be reversible PVA...if that's the case then surely you still wouldn't slap it all over the signature, because if you need a solution to remove the board the painted signature is sure to come off too...absolute farce and will get to the bottom of it!!
Cheers guys, I have a feeling a lot of people have used this place but may not have known that they ONLY frame the pieces and not known that they are sent elsewhere to be mounted, so when you pick it up you are none the wiser?.. .to be honest it's been nothing but stress and hearing every excuse in the book since I first went there so he's done me a favour and the 5 pieces I took in on Friday will go to someone who knows what they're doing!Always felt a bit suss when I asked how they were mounted and he said "we don't even know that ourselves" "it's a trade secret"...yeah right, Bostik and No Nails is a different trade fella! I will reveal asap as it's only fair to anyone thinking of taking their pieces there... The five pieces WILL go, meaning they haven't gone yet? Get them back immediately...dont give him another chance to ruin yet more valuable art...regardless of whether or not its been sold to you as a favour...why weren't they sent to someone who knows what they are doing in the first place...'tis hardly a favour! If it is it will take the signature off with it surely as that is only painted on...there is noway that that signature can avoid being affected, the piece isn't heavy and so glue dots or acid free double sided in the corners would have been absolutely fine...one hour till I find out how this shoddy workmanship happened...

WHAT 'LIES' BENEATH - GUTTED!! , by bitpunk on Jan 9, 2012 15:54:17 GMT 1, Its fucking outrageous that a framer would do that. I've just had to get 3 Stanley Donwood prints re-framed due to my now ex-framer fucking one of them up (and so I quite rightly mis-trusted him on the others). I noticed a minor imperfection and so went ahead to remove it from the frame to inspect it and found the print had been taped down on all four sides to the mat with what appears to be standard masking tape. Another one looks like it had been trimmed down to fit a frame he already had. Fucking livid.
