Adam Neate โข Revolving Door, by connecta1 on Jan 7, 2012 9:12:17 GMT 1, I know that most of you of dislike this probably went to the last show. But I would be interested to see a simple yes or no if you did or didn't go to the last show. For me, until I saw the perspex pieces In the flesh I didn't get them at all. I too love his cardboard paintings(2d and 3d). But without seeing the perspex in person I would be very carefull about disliking the works. ...this was going to be my next question, how many of those suggesting he 'go back to painting cardboard' actually went to the show?

Adam Neate โข Revolving Door, by pezlow on Jan 7, 2012 9:44:48 GMT 1, I went to the last show. It's not about going back or going forward. Its just that personally I don't think these 3d works do it for me. And it's got nothing to do with prints or this scene. We all know neate has no intention of releasing any prints for the immediate future.
Agree with nuart would be great to see him painting a few walls. There were some great photos of the walls he painted in brazil.
Anyway nice to see a thread where art is being discussed, all about opinions at the end of the day.

Adam Neate โข Revolving Door, by sand on Jan 7, 2012 9:55:49 GMT 1, Firstly I have got to say it's great to see an artist who continues to take on a challenge and risk to push his work forward. It would have been all to easy for him to carry on painting in the same vein, releasing a handful of prints each year and be living very comfortably.
But (thank goodness) that's not Neate.
It's often hard to appreciate a lot of artwork from low-res images seen on the internet.
Even the best photos miss the little intricacies that make a work; the brush strokes, the depth of the painting, the scale of the work before you etc.
And none more so than the recent dimensional paintings by Neate. It might be worth trying to see them in person before casting a definitive judgement over the new works.
Whilst I don't think the 'Revolving Door' piece is one of his best (far from it), I do like it.
For me it can be seen to be about the state of the current economy and the gloom surrounding it. The feeling of things being out of control and trapping people in their current circumstances. It's almost as though the character in the piece is trying to break free.
I understand why people say that the work 'lacks soul' in comparison to his older painted works. But I think this is deliberate.
The older pieces were made from reclaimed cardboard and bits and pieces. All the material in the new works is bought and paid for. Having spoken to Paul, this seems deliberate.
In my opinion it's a commentary on the commercialism apparent in today's society. The striving for 'perfection' in life - the need for plastic surgery to convey a certain image, the need to buy certain things to make your life 'complete' etc.
The works are almost clinical and 'clean'.
A reclining nude, a businessman sat in a bar looking at his watch not wanting to go home are just some of the topics (the trappings of modern day life?!) Neate touched upon in his last show.
If you're still not convinced, give him some more time and see what he comes up with in the future. I still think he is learning this new technique and can't wait to see how he develops it further.

Adam Neate โข Revolving Door, by remirough on Jan 7, 2012 11:45:29 GMT 1, Woah, suprised this has so much love. Adam Neate is unquestionably talented but I really don't think much of this at all. Gimmicky and, well, a bit naff if you ask me. Personally I've never really got why he does all the 3 dimensional stuff. He's such a talented painter that he should stick to what he does well, his spectacularly haunting 2d paintings. It strikes me that this work shows a man who is really struggling to find his way. Each to their own. Ho hum. Pez I agree 100%. I would dig out the post were I said the same thing after his last show but I cannot seem to find it. I just love his paintings so much and his latest 3D stuff is just to arts & crafts for me. Such a pity but maybe its part of the journey he must take to discover what he really has to offer. So mightily talented I have to believe that he will come good in the end. Just my opinion of course.
Totally agree with you both, his paintings are spot on, the cyclist being one of my all time favourite paintings... This is extremely clever but doesn't quite hold together as a complete artwork for me, looks like 4 artworks in one if you know what I mean. It is just personal taste tho... He is a talented painter / artist, but I still stand by my statements of his prints being utterly atrocious! Thos squiggly drawn heads, like the ones he left all over London... You'd have had to pay me to hang that in my house.
Back to the Cyclist tho... So Fresh!

Adam Neate โข Revolving Door, by Deleted on Jan 7, 2012 13:21:21 GMT 1, An artist I think sometimes shows plenty of talent yet I find all his work boring. That cyclist being a good example, well done but really doesn't mean anything, does not give me any real emotion or do anything for me. It could easily be used in the marketing material for Tour de France and I wouldn't give it a second look. Probably down to my poor taste because most people seem to like his work, or have done at some stage in his career.
Very poor taste . One of my two favorites, along with Blue couple'. Each to their own. It interesting to see a thread where people aren't saying Neates the Second coming. He is more than that to me.

Adam Neate โข Revolving Door, by speebe on Jan 7, 2012 13:48:48 GMT 1, I think we all know that Adam and the Elms team could have continued to produce great work on Cardboard and churned out more, and more prints that would have been eagerly lapped up... milking the process and continuing to appeal to the viewers/fans/market... I totally admire what they are doing, taking risks, investing in an artist they truly believe in, rather than worrying about commercial gain.
Too few galleries really push their artists or support the development of an artists long term career like the Elms team.
I too would prefer to own something on card but know that the sculptural relief work using acrylic is far more time consuming and difficult to produce and although it may not be giving US what we'd prefer this is just a reflection of a gallery and artist who are more concerned with pushing the boundaries of working in sculptural relief and playing with perspective, layer on layer.
Technically this stuff if far superior but I think it's just that perspex/acrylic is a cold fairly clinical material and as a result probably doesn't resonate with as wide an audience.
But WTF do I know...

Which is what a lot of our world is, and the people and world they inhabit are.
A trip round a Neate exhibition with Paul as your host puts it all into context. And only when viewed first hand is this work really appreciated.
As others have stated, fair play to adam and Elms for moving on and experimenting when the safe option is to stand still.

Think it was from paintings pots and prints, its not in my books anyway. The man is in a class of his own. The service at Elms from Paul and Fiona is second to none. Always willing to spend as long as you want talking about Adams work, knowing your probably only going to buy a book or poster. I wish they did a book for the last show. I really would love a Neate original, maybe a street piece. Any reasonably priced out there?.

Any place online where I can see more of it ? A second visit to Elms is definitely on the agenda... Thanks

Adam Neate โข Revolving Door, by pezlow on Jan 8, 2012 10:01:26 GMT 1, Yep definitely paintings pots and prints.
One other thing, I don't think it would be standing still if Adam decided to carry on painting on cardboard and on walls. There are an endless variety of subject matters he can paint and he has such an eye for modern life, as others have observed, that I am sure that he could paint into his nineties and still make things fresh. My issue with the 3d stuff is that it becomes more about the medium and the technical achievements than the message the artist is trying to convey. We admire it in the same way we admire a 100 colour screen print - wow that must have really hard to make! It doesn't provoke the same depth of response, the same soul as someone else observed, as his earlier work.
