Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Heavyconsumer on Nov 19, 2008 0:34:14 GMT 1, That's a very good write up, congratulations. It's well worth noting that he's written this presumably with no knowledge of your recent run in with the Hirstster and his goon mob, so again, well done. I'm sure if he had read this thread first, he would have laughed even harder still!

"Because this was by far the most charming work of art I came across in its contemporary gallery. How hilarious that the NPG so desperately chases after the great and the good of Britart, and yet this collage by an artist who's unlikely to get a public commission steals the show."
Very good taste that Jonathan Jones ;D

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by alsbabar on Nov 19, 2008 3:28:52 GMT 1, hang on, whoa your horses, "Banksy is just another part of the empty media culture" while Cartrain is "avant garde" - this guy is talking out of his arse - Sorry but i dont buy it, this certainly isnt pushing the boundaries nor is it innovative, especially when this has been done before, by........Banksy!!! Also taking a Hirst piece and doing something else with it, cite Banksy's Maid Spotless, Beejoir Immodiums, isnt new either
Theres no such thing as good publicity!!

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Heavyconsumer on Nov 19, 2008 3:40:16 GMT 1, Als, have you read the whole thread? It's kind of ammusing, whatever you make of the piece itself - Personally I like the piece because of where it's come from much more than what it looks like! As stated above I think it's a shame that Mr Jones didn't know the history of the piece, as I'm sure that the story behind it would have got a mention. And to be fair it's not CT or a member familiar with his work bigging it up. He's entitled to feel pleased with that write-up, whatever you or I or anyone else makes of it. It's a nice write up, when you're singled out as producing something more charming than all the artists in the contemporary gallery at the NPG, no??

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by alsbabar on Nov 19, 2008 3:48:54 GMT 1, HC - to use a poiniant cliche - art is subjective - however from a journalistic point of view, this is poor, because had he known his history, then he wouldnt be making such glib remarks. I am not begrudging Cartrain any upweight in the wake of his actions, but the way it is being documented and remarked upon, it is as if this is something new and refreshing - when it isnt. I do not see any artistic merit in it, whatsoever, especially when it is/has been plagurised. I dare say, if all the artist who's works we like and have purchased over time, just replicated what others had done before them, we wouldnt have much of a collection.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by baileymontana on Nov 19, 2008 10:24:44 GMT 1, Do agree with Alsabar in that Banksy did lead the way on this type of art stunt so an article by someone dissing Banksy and praising Cartrain does not make me think the critic is the be all and end all.
Got to give props to Cartrain though. Never seen a piece of his work I'd want to buy but he's showing he's got the balls to go further afield than the streets of East London. Hopefully it won't be long before he puts his work up in a place that Banksy has not yet thought of.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by dmandpenfold on Nov 19, 2008 10:44:09 GMT 1, hasn't cartrain done this at least twice before as well as Banksy, people here are talking about it as if he's just come up with a new and cutting edge concept. Als is right the critic is somewhat off track in a few areas... avant garde, does he even know the meaning?
Well done for getting a mention by the guardian's JJ by the way, i am sure you are chuffed regardless

'Banksy is at least clever enough to avoid the leaden rhetoric of his imitator, a graffitist called Cartrain with the second R written backwards, whose paintings can also be seen on the South Bank, and indeed all over London, with their hackneyed double portraits of Blair and Bush. No one is going to mistake Cartrain for an artist.' www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2007/jul/05/art

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Deleted on Nov 19, 2008 12:32:30 GMT 1, Banksy buys walls space in NY, gets advertising artists to create his works, he checks with owners prior to hiding behind scaffolding when creating his works, he rents retail space for his work now.....at least Cartrain is still doing it without permission and rebelling against the art world, however cliched and poor the artwork is, he's still making a stand - altho if this all just to sell some work the point is lost completely - but in part at least I applaud you Cartrain - now get a decent idea and prove to all of the doubters you're not a joke

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by stickitup on Nov 19, 2008 15:03:41 GMT 1, as art students we were always putting things up in museums and changing name tags back in the early nineties. please ask any major gallery when the first unauthorised peice was put up in them and i am sure you will get dates which predate banksy and ct. its not an original concept, banksy made it famous and others are copying it again. ct you do need to think up a half original concept - the hirst one is a good attempt. you now need to follow it up.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by romanywg on Nov 19, 2008 19:51:17 GMT 1, Just bloody ridiculous! As I said before they did this with the girl who made the copy of the skull and he sent the heavies round. I think in that case they actually paid her a tidy sum though. I love Jonathan Jones saying "only some bad grammar made me notice the text itself was fake". Fancy getting a rave review because your grammars shit, that's something to tell your teachers.
