Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by monkeyballs on Sept 4, 2009 18:10:21 GMT 1, Its just a plastic lobster and a phone, but if you took either part of that (neither of which independently would cost in excess of Β£100) from Tate Modern, I think you'd be looking at a similar outcome. Guys its an installation of art, the pencils original value is irrelevant, what is at stake is now its in the national press an example will need to be made to stop other visitors taking 'souvenirs' in future.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by wizzy on Sept 4, 2009 18:16:44 GMT 1, Bob, this is why i was under the impression that it was Hirst who initially instructed DACS to recover the Death of God images that Cartrain had done, taken from an article in the Independent.
www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/news/hirst-demands-share-of-artists-16365-copies-1054424.html
"He was surprised to learn Hirst had not only seen the work but also contacted the Design and Artists Copyright Society (Dacs), who apparently informed the young artist he had infringed Hirst's copyright. The older man has reportedly demanded that Cartrain not only remove the works from sale but "deliver up" originals, along with any profit made on those sold, or face legal action."

Pretty hypothetical really - if Cartrain made a print incorporating some of Banksy's work, I very much doubt Banksy would go crying to DACs over 'copyright infringement' like a whiney little bitch. Probably because he isn't an egotistical p*ick.

Oh so those actions validate the theft? Because Banksy isn't an asshole he doesnt deserve to have a portion of his installation stolen.
Because Hirst is we should all be allowed to take what we want from his artworks.
Duly noted, thanks for clearing that up.

Nearly every single grafitti artist i know has stolen paint, caps, beer and women in there time. Banksy is just the same, im sure he has many a story of the early days getting drunk doing paint runs with the lads.
Grafitti is a crime remember, the new banksy in London was a criminal offence.....I cant see pages of i hope he gets nicked or i hope he gets whats coming to him!
Crazy.

Me thinks you need a bit of perspective! Thieving a few pencils as a jokey retort to Hirst coming after Cartain with all lawyers blazing for 'copyright infringement' (give me strength!) is clearly a bit of fun, which strikes me as being completely in spirit with this 'scene'. I used to respect Hirst as a canny businessman, but now I just think he's a humourless berk!

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by nacional on Sept 4, 2009 22:04:26 GMT 1, Listen to yourselves. The kids rips off some art DACS shakes him down for a copyright infringement, then he goes and robs part of a serious art installation, but its ok, because errrr he's getting back at Hirst, who didn't shake him down in the first place. If you want to get back at someone go chuck a brick through DACS's window! DACS support the rights and copyright of artists world wide, its what they do, if Cartrain was a real artist they would do it for him as well. You lot are a bunch of f**k sticks. If you want to be Mr big man and go fight the system, GO FIGHT THE SYSTEM not another artist...... go steal all the pens from Nat West, those c**ts deserve it, or go write something across Barclays Bank.
I don't really think stealing pens from Nat West (which is quite a friendly little bank really) or writing something on a wall at Barclays can really qualify as fighting the system, it's just petty theft and a bit of scribbling: hardly likely to tear down the fabric of society now is it....
Cartrain was implicitly shaken down by Hirst as he did instruct DACS to act. Something he did not do when Cauty et al put it to him after the Cartrain shakedown as he quickly realised he had made a big PR mistake by attacking a minnow....
I think a fuckstick is a stick one fucks...or a stick one is fucked by...does this mean it is the same as a dildo but more woody and with knobbly twiggy bits on it...I don't know but perhaps Bob can explain....he is a reasonable man....

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by monkeyballs on Sept 4, 2009 22:16:00 GMT 1, I feel very sorry for him, I also suspect it may well be Tate behind this rather than DACS, could be wrong. Put it this way, a lot of exhibitions put on there are on loan, this is now out, security in Tate is not up to scratch, if you can steal pencils, you can steal more or deface. This will be a custodial sentence.
Expect tighter security at Tate going forward, I'm sure people will be more worried lending work to them now.

Know how much tourism free art in London and bringing in global names generates? Custodial mate, message needs to be sent to institutions globally. Pawn in a bigger game

This is whats sad about it, he's not doing it to ''Get back at Hirst'' like some fucking hero, he's doing it to get famous.
If I loaned some of my collection to the Tate Modern, be it by Hirst, Jeff Koons or Tracy Emin I'd be fucking pissed off if some spotty teenager came and robbed it to grab a bit of tacky fame.
Cartrain, you couldn't get any fame from your stencils because they were SHIT even if you painted them 30cm away from a Banksy at every chance you got, and now you won't get any fame from robbing Hirst, because your art work is still shit.
You'd do a lot better becoming his friend like errr Banksy did, now there is some good business sense for you.

this wasnt such an act
yes, CT did something naughty & teeth gratingly unsubtle. He is 16/17 FFS.
yes Hirst is perfectly morally able to assert his copyright & defend his work against criminal acts, as are the filth & eventually the CPS in deciding as to whether this warrants a case
IMHO, both of these bloated, egotistical wankers should be told to fuck off and stop wasting everyones time. Sometimes interpreting everything to the letter of the law doesnt make things clearer.
CT - Now give the pencils back, mumble a public apology and fuck off. dont show your face until you have soemthing to say that is original
Hirst - accept the apology & use it to graciously put a lid on this petty feud. Use this free PR to your advantage.

Yeah, coz Emin and Hirst would never dream of doing any publicity stunts in order to sell a few more pieces...
I've personally got no love for Cartrain's prints, but from the start this episode has been quite interesting and pretty funny, perhaps made more so by some of the po faced posters on here getting as irate as Hirst & DACS have got.
