Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Daniel Silk on Sept 6, 2009 0:22:10 GMT 1, Can I ask everyone to keep the swearing down please.
A forum is all about people posting their opinions and discussing art, but when some continually feel the need to post with (Removed)s of swearing and abuse I'm forced to step in. I have sent warnings to a few people tonight, and I hope they have calmed down and can still continue being a part of this discussion in a more constructive and civilized way.
Thanks!

With the greatest respect, if you followed this story you would know it's not a black and white case of theft.Life seldom is...
So for those with an open mind it's not a case of a 16 year old stealing part of major exibit (sic)
The winds of change amuse me here, on a diferent day Hirst gets slated for his use of helpers in his studios...

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by daz205 on Sept 6, 2009 17:59:15 GMT 1, I would assume the Tate would have had to inform the police, insurance, hirst etc. About cartrain messing with the exibit as soon as the cash in poster/prints started to appear, the only person responsible for wasting the polices time is cartrain for stealing from the museum in the first place

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by milkybinbags on Sept 6, 2009 18:53:49 GMT 1, If you knew the whole story you would realise how pathetic it is that this arrogant and hypocritical man is pursuing this case. Good use of police time and and taxpayers money.
why shouldn't the case be pursued? he stole part of an exhibition, however minor. they've got every right to recover their property, and i can only believe that the crap photoshop wanted posters have only fuelled the gallery/hirst's annoyance.
i'd be pissed off if part of my art was taken from being on display to find someone flaunting it. without the public display of his actions through prints the police would most probably not have bothered going after a pack of measly pencils, but as he acted as such, they must feel the need to nip these kinds of actions in the bud to prevent further instances.

agreed 100artworks, although undoubtedly passionate about their artist, tagging twitter posts with #hirstisacock surely can't be helping?

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Richard on Sept 6, 2009 22:27:32 GMT 1, Hirst was a cock - going after a young lad when all his work is copied off other people anyway! Cartrain reacted in what I consider an amusing manner.
It was a few pencils he stole that can be replaced - it is not like he went in to the National Gallery and threw paint over a Monet is it...
Hirsts work are not the same as Picasso's etc - they (Hirst's work) are conceptual and it is the concept Hirst bangs on about not who executes it....

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Daniel Silk on Sept 6, 2009 22:43:03 GMT 1, "He was told by custody officers that the pencils were valued at Β£500,000 and that he had damaged "the concept of a public artwork titled Pharmacy ... valued at Β£10,000,000". Cartrain is on bail and, if convicted, his actions will feature among the highest value modern art thefts in Britain."
If they have the pencils back, I cant really see much point in them going much further with it I would say that by Damien Hirst forcing Cartrain to hand over his art and money made from it was more like theft than what Cartrain has done. I cant see Hirst had any right to do that to Cartrain in the first place, but he has just used his money and weight to bully a young Artist knowing he could not afford to fight the case in court.
I think this whole thing has been a really stupid move by Hirst, and a large chunk of the population will be looking at him and his work in a very different light in the future.

It's been said a million times before... Hirst has stolen more than just the ideas from John LeKay, Robert Dixon, Carolina Biological Supply Co.... the list goes on. He then goes after this cartrain guy for Β£200 compensation for using some of hirsts work in his print. Hypocritical. Cartrain has displayed more originality in this latest stunt than hirst ever has.
stealing ideas and stealing a actual piece of a multi million pound installation isnt the same dude...think about it. This whole thing is a shameless publicity stunt

No..........but
Is it any different to the theft of road signs for example, something which has been done by a few on here without condemnation.
Interesting that it's the Tate though, a museum built on the proceeds of sugar plantations and slavery which could be called the biggest theft in history

This really can't be answered with a yes or no. It's a bit like asking "do we think it is a good idea to applaud the damage of property with a spray can"?
Everyone will have an opinion and a limit on what they think is acceptable...private or public property, tagging or art, stencil v free hand etc
I think Hirst is coming across as an idiot and whatever you think about Cartrain's artwork, it was quite a brave thing to do and IMO in the spirit of some of Banksy's pranks. It made me laugh but didn't make me want to buy a print.
If Hirst / DAC's had gone for Cauty and others when they did their support Cartrain campaign prints there would have been some consistency.
Are there actually any artists out there who don't want publicity? I presume only artists who do not sell anything at all would fall into this category.

It is my opinion in this case Cashman that what is inside the building is more important than the bulidiing itself whether it be the Tate or any other Museum / Gallery. I assume (Maybe wrongly i dont know?) that if the Hirst installation was held in any other place than the Tate then Cartrain would still have attempted to get even.

a road sign isnt worth 10 million quid... i would hapily steal a road sign knowing its worth only a few bob, i wouldnt steal part of an art work from a museum knowing its going to be worth millions.. thats high scale + value theft. you should go to jail for that. Like anyone else who has stolen a masterpeice from a museum has done in the past.. i think we are looking at a custodial sentence for this. and he is over 18 so will go to jail.
yup, he is over 18, otherwise on his bail form it would have to be signed by an adult if he was a minor. which it isnt. (i have good experience in bail forms )
