Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by darrenrapley on Sept 7, 2009 10:58:51 GMT 1, I don't particularly like Cartrain's work; nor do I agree with stealing from The Tate. However, I hope he doesn't get either to big a punishment for this nor do I want to see him get loads of PR.
I would like to see his work progress naturally to a point where he doesn't need to resort to this type of activity.
I wonder if Messrs Cauty/Reid and Childish are planning anything?

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Daniel Silk on Sept 7, 2009 11:46:42 GMT 1, Road signs can cost hundreds or even thousands of pounds, and all we are talking about is a box of pencils that would have only originally cost a couple of quid.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by schlomo on Sept 7, 2009 12:02:54 GMT 1, Sorry Silky, thats not the point is it? Canvas and paint doesnt cost thousands of pounds, but once it has been painted and hung in a gallery it does.
Thats not to say i agree with people saying its like stealing a masterpiece, it isnt, it equates (in my mind and only my opinion) to the same as a tag on a wall. Not sure why i feel that way but i do. I think Hirst should grow a sense of humour as he could easily replace the pencils (again, i know some will say 'well why should he have to?' but its not like a painting that has taken hours/days to conceive and paint, its a box of pencils that can be easily replaced without any real alteration to the installation, and certainly without any alteration to the meaning of said installation).
At the end of the day alot of the blame has to lie with 100 artworks, sorry but it does. You sell C's work, and should act as the responsible side for his youthful irresponsible side. He is a kid and probably looked at what he did with kids eyes. You are adults and should have looked at it with more serious eyes and realised the consequences of his actions. I think selling work on the back of this shows that you have no other motivation than money, and care little for the artists you represent. again just my opinion.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by richy00 on Sept 7, 2009 12:18:43 GMT 1, im pretty sure the ones people steal are the triangle ones or traffic cones which cost about 50 quid. they are also not part of a greater scheme which costs millions..
thats like saying oh banksys canvas doesnt cost much its only a bit of spraypaint that cost Β£2.50 and a bit of board he found that was worthless.. does that give a original banksy a value of Β£2.50?? no.
cartrain deserves to have the book thrown at him, theft of Β£500'000 is a big deal. its all down to if the tate want to press on with the conviction, there is ample evidence!!!! he has self incriminated himself. i think im right in saying the maximum sentence is 8 years. but most people only get between 2 and 3. The guys who stole the scream got between 2.5 and 7 years, the prof who took a few maps from the british library ( a few maps worth 1.5m) he got 2 years. and a 800k fine. that guy who stole a page from a book got 2 years, halved on appeal.
i would also take cartrain to the cleaners for all the shit he has sprayed around london. i never normally take a disliking to someone before meeting them but the self promoting publicity grabbing nature of this guy i cant stand.

He didn't steal Β£500,000 - he stole a box of pencils that can be replaced with no damage to the piece of work. He didn't go in and throw paint over a Spot painting or something like that...
He also had no weapon on him and used no force...

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by G-Man on Sept 7, 2009 12:33:59 GMT 1, I wonder when we will get an update on what is happening with this case?
I think that whatever happens this may set a precedent and therefore I eagerly await the update
If Cartrain is prosecuted then that will send out a clear message from galleries about the consequence of stealing, if he doesnt then it seems to open the floodgates for more theft
I cant really see how they cannot presue this one??
Not a fan of Cartrain's art but still admire the balls of the guy to try something this big

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by bazzj04 on Sept 7, 2009 12:52:19 GMT 1, i realy not bothered either wayt what happens , it is kinda funny though , but regaurdless how you look at it , this pack of pencisl was not worth that money , I know its part of exhibition etc etc , but still , its something that was never made , created adapted from its original off the shelf state, ho can something that you can buy from a shop been put on a desk and the price shoots straight up, ? i dont think it can. be differnt if this was a pack of pencils made by Hirst to look like the real object or something similar but it wasnt . Just buy new ones put on desk still press charges though just for the hell of it ... but a pack of pencils worth this much no chance ,

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by richy00 on Sept 7, 2009 13:13:15 GMT 1, we find out on the 11th when he is called back.. you will know then..
people need to stop looking at them as just pencils, they are not just pencils they are part of a work of art. the same as any other work of art if you take a bit out you damage it and its never worth the same again. If it goes to court and the courts decide he has damaged it to the sum of X, then he is going to have to raid his piggy bank..
yes the scream guys were armed, point taken.. but the map guy wasnt, and neither was the book page guy, they were just old professors who stole a page or two out of some books.. they got (excuse the pun) the book thrown at them.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by schlomo on Sept 7, 2009 13:51:57 GMT 1, Sorry you cannot compare this to Hakimzadeh and the 150 books he cut pages out of! They were 16th Century and 17th century texts and were completely irreplaceable. I also think you may be mixing two people up, Hakimzadeh stole the map as well, it was a 16th century map created by one of Henry VIII's artists.
However, Hirsts pencils are easily replaced and are not anywhere near as important historically as these texts were, and they never will be. Again I wonder if anyone would have even noticed they were missing before 100 artworks started trying to sell things relating to them??

I agree with that totally no one would have even noticed that these were missing probably only when the exhibit was packed away and they were ticking off there list.. But again i think thats the difference with this stolen "art" compared with other examples given in the thread , these are pencils that can be brought again and replaced,I still stand buy the fact that these are pencils thats all , When complete with the rest of the piece they maybe become "art" but pencils on there own are not art .As far as i know these exact box of pencils have no hidden history or meaning. So i think that a pack of pencils can be replaced with ease.
this reminds me of the storey about the constipated mathematician? ..he worked his problem out with a pencil...

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by moleman on Sept 7, 2009 16:32:54 GMT 1, The thread is not about wanting cartrains work its about what you think about this massive media circus which follows hirst. He always get stick because of who he is. I personally think it took huge balls and is a very funny game of tit for tat a sort of david and goliath. If it is owned by the tate hirst would not be following this as he has made his money by selling it. The only thing cartrain did wrong is admitting guilt. As i said above i would guess that 98 percent here would take the Banksy sign even though the outcome is much worse. Its a any of pencils they can be replaced. I would love a cartrain sketch done with one just for the stories sake. Game on young man stay low keep quiet and plan the next move. Good luck

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by daz205 on Sept 7, 2009 16:42:47 GMT 1, if cartrain was trying to be clever why didnt he add something to the installation to take the P out of hirst as opposed to stealing from and damaging part of the installation ?
b.t.w i have a monkey canvas i borrowed from the bristol museum. some bloke made it who tagged my wall ages ago so i took it as it was only going into storage for the new museum so no one would have got to see it for ages and i`m owed something for my loss of time etc cleaning the tag off my wall. hope no one minds, but if you do want to see the image i will be selling prints of it at a later date to cover my losses
