Craig Everett ๐ฌ๐ง Rourke Van Dal โข Urban Artist, by Guy Denning on Jun 17, 2008 16:04:59 GMT 1, I could live with it on the wall. It does have that dadaist, situationist feel - in the same way as Gee Vaucher's CRASS stuff - which was brilliant. I'd keep it black and white too.

then I think it was done for Crass fourth album, released in 1982 "Christ - The Album" and Gee V has done a large size poster inside the album.

Craig Everett ๐ฌ๐ง Rourke Van Dal โข Urban Artist, by loucastel on Jun 19, 2008 21:20:29 GMT 1, Hi Rourke, cant make up my mind on this one, the figure on the left gives me the creeps, the rest looks excellent, you to my mind are one of the very few artist on here who can actually draw, so would love to see this in oils and acrylics, only because I like colour (without the scary person), but still a cracking image, if you fancy trying out the oil/acrylic thing let me know.

Craig Everett ๐ฌ๐ง Rourke Van Dal โข Urban Artist, by Rourke on Jun 19, 2008 21:31:37 GMT 1, Thanks alot mate
Totally agree and at this stage the figure on the left doesnt really fit (cheers Bigman), am in the process of doing the left side again, the right hasnt been seen yet. Hopefully get on to that next week.
Also agree it would look good in acrylics.
That would be possible, but would take me about a year to complete this image in complete acrylic/watercolour. and would prob cost alot of brass. Might do small sections of it in full acrylic thgough. Also full and part embellished (handfinished)
Thanks alot for your input, I really apreciate it

Craig Everett ๐ฌ๐ง Rourke Van Dal โข Urban Artist, by Rourke on Jun 21, 2008 19:55:03 GMT 1, Alright
Been drawing a new stencil up over the last few days, tried to tighten it up a little. Its part of the Skins Collection.
Would love some feedback. opinions, critisism good or bad. Thanks
Hopefully gonna try to get it sprayed up for next weekend, will post scans in progress.
Cheers
Or by the way this isnt the complete image, will work on that after I have sprayed this one up.

Craig Everett ๐ฌ๐ง Rourke Van Dal โข Urban Artist, by spirit on Jun 21, 2008 20:01:47 GMT 1, Not one for my wall but good strong image none the less Rourke. My only critisism would be that some of the facial highlights look a bit clumsy - particularly in the guy's face on the right.
Please can you explain the "adidit" bit?

What?
It looks like Madness crossed with Clockwork Orange featuring a badly logo'd bag...
Which is fine - but what's the point of it?
I think you are a talented drawer and much of your work reminds me of Bryan Talbot (which is a GOOD THING) and, as I've said to you before, elements of Lowry but it doesn't have an identity and the message is clumsy.
Same with Grafter and (earlier work - less with more recent stuff) SPQR. I mean - I went to another degree show today and, yeah, some of it was alright but it felt, on the whole, so derivative and plagiaristic that it was barely worth a glance...
I mean - Grafter Eskimo Girl - WTF? Surely we are expecting more than a well cut stencil?
I read a criticism on here recently because someone (I forget who) said 'Yeah, but what's it supposed to be?' about someone's work. I would reverse this with 'Yeah, I can see what it is but - so what?'

I like your posts pp but I'm going to disagree with you here. It was Snakes who wrote something along the lines of 'Yeah, but what's it supposed to be?' about the Mr Jago print and something similar about Bast's Clooney. I responded to his comment saying that art can be abstract as well as representational and therefore it doesn't need to "be" anything. Equally, with regards to your comment, I think art can simply take the form of a strong aesthetically pleasing image (which is the case with both this and Grafter's Eskimo Boy) without necessarily having any deeper message or meaning. Historically, a lot of art has very little meaning and is often more about the development of a particular style, which I think Rourke's work has (particularly his drawings) but the nature of the stencil limits stylistic identity much more than say the pen or brush...

Hi Spirit
Thanks for a thoughtful response. I will counter with -
NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!
Historically very little art has little meaning - most has a truckload of meaning which is why it can usually be defined by schools/movement.
I'm looking at my Blek 'Tango' which is simple and well cut, like 'Eskimo'. However, Blek had a reason for cutting and painting this stencil which was political and social. I belive 'Eskimo' was cut as a portrait comission?
I know what you mean about things simply being beautiful but I would suggest very little art does that - most finds something to help you relate with it and travel with it.
I guess I could move towards a discussion about art v design but I'm not going to. In the room where I type this I have the Tango, 2 Thielke and Choe's 'Hoppers'. I think that they all carry a message AND are beautiful...
I need to relate....haven't been able to do that with this Rourke or Grafter's stuff...
BTW - did i mention I have beautiful message bearing art available here...
