Nothing on TV went for under ยฃ1400 yesterday.
A blip or is it the Dan Baldwin effect (surely not)?

I'd word this way, whoever was paying $5-7,000 a couple months ago for a giclee was getting ripped off. Prices now are "ok."

Is this a continuation of the giclee vs. screenprint argument or a critique of Neate's work?

Neate's Cold War for ยฃ1400!!, by dgb133 on Sept 5, 2007 16:30:02 GMT 1, I like Neate (sorry I was thinking in USD) but 2-3k GBP for a giclee print by an artist that is (doing well but) still really establishing himself and is yet to buld up a truly extensive resumรฉ is ridiculous. And it also has something to do with giclee. A high quality litho would be preferable to me. (And not just a CMYK litho but plates for multiple colors. At that price that's the quality I would hope for.
At 1-1.5k for a giclee print by Neate I think it's ok. And if there weren't a ton of other artists I like a little more and if it weren't for the shrinking amount of wall space I have I would "look" into buying one. I'll leave it up to others to guess whether his prints will return to the 2-3k category or whether they'll do a Baldwin drop...

Neate's Cold War for ยฃ1400!!, by manchestermike on Sept 5, 2007 16:38:15 GMT 1, Good to know your thoughts dgb, but I still don't get the giclee argument - would you pay more if it was a screenprint? Although (and before anyone says I know how well BRP have done with screenprints of Matt Small and Peter Kennard works) I don't think you'd get an image of anywhere near the same quality.
I'm not going to get into a debate about Neate, as people know my views, but I think he is the artist out of EVERYONE discussed on these forums who will be the star of our generation. He is truly something else, fresh and original. Those people who have got the originals are unbelievably lucky as you have got a piece of art history in the making there. Those of us who have the prints are very lucky too, we have some of the finest work that has been around for many years.
As for taking a "Baldwin drop" (a little harsh that one ;D ) I don't think so, it's a combination of factors discussed on here already, but for those people picking the prints up for ยฃ1,500 and under in the secondary market they're getting some of the best bargains in years, and well done to them

Agreed and the point is that flippers will flip and they were a big -part of the invite list but once in the fans hands and on walls then when there gone there gone. price aside I think we are lucky to have them as images.

Neate's Cold War for ยฃ1400!!, by dgb133 on Sept 5, 2007 16:51:40 GMT 1, As far as giclee (inkjet print) goes - they're quick and easy to produce for one thing. A fine art litho requires time and craftsmanship - for a print costing me over 5k (usd) that's what I would want. A fine art litho is traditionally done by the artist going in to the press and literally drawing or manipulating each plate (color) - they are far higher quality and much more archivally sound. To me a giclee is ok if it's a cheap edition but I'm not going to pay 2-3k (gbp) for someone to just rip out a print on an epson. But that's just me.
And yeah, I do like Neate, some of his stuff I like a lot, some of it I think is mediocre. But I like the guy I don't think he will be the superstar that you and others think he will be though I guess. To each his own. Still I think those that paid 3k GBP for a giclee got ripped and that prices right now finally seem to be a relatively fair deal.
Some of the images are truly nice but if you look at other more traditional artists, there work hardly ever pops up on ebay yet when it does prices seem to be much more rational imo.

I'll probably let this dude answer that, but for me it's the image that's important, not whether they're a screen print or something else. Fact is screenprints would never capture these images like giclee can
Actually, if you are talking about top-end prints that's not quite true. The kind of prints that we produced with Ian Francis are not cheaper or quicker... we produce both screenprints and giclees, and these giclees are a pain in the *ss and expensive to produce. Screenprints are actually easier and definitely cheaper to produce (especially in bulk) if you know what you're doing.
I know some of Neate's stuff is better than other stuff... but it's the same with every artist. Everyone produces some work that is better than other work, it is impossible to be consistently on one exact level, but Neate is closer than most.

Neate's Cold War for ยฃ1400!!, by Aza on Sept 5, 2007 17:31:39 GMT 1, Now is a great time to buy. But this baldwin effect is nonsense, its just a large amount being flipped at once. Once fans get hold of them it will settle down again. Banksy is well down too, in fact now is a good time to buy all round.
Neate is a living legend, its not hype

Neate's Cold War for ยฃ1400!!, by dgb133 on Sept 5, 2007 17:52:49 GMT 1, Yeah, but every artists original work looks amazing in the flesh. That goes without saying.
And I'm not saying they should be screenprints they should be lithos for this much money.
And I'm not saying I don't like Neate, but this work fits into the same genre as a lot of other artists, Barry Mcgee, Keegan Mchargue, Jules de Balincourt and a ton of others I can't put my finger on right now. It's very of the moment. And painting on cardboard and decompsing textures isn't exactly new. I'm not ragging on him though, I like this stuff and he does it well though but personally I'm really not ready to say HE will be the megastar. I think he'll do alright though. It's just that all this "bargain" talk reminds me of when the nasdaq went from 5000 to 2500 - I'm sure lots of people thought it was a bargain at 2500. But you can never know for sure.
Mostly I was just saying when his prints that were only giclees were going for 3k GBP they were overpriced and way out of line with what prints by similar artists go for that's all. at 1.5k gbp it sounds like a fair deal sure and if you like the image at least you'r enot buying at the top anymore so go to it.

Neate's Cold War for ยฃ1400!!, by biggayal on Sept 5, 2007 18:49:07 GMT 1, Tell me about it - well chuffed ;D Didn't think there would be any chance of owning a Neate I caught the auction as it was ending and was hovering over the bid button. ;D There's others I want more, so I held back. I'm glad it's got to someone here. Cheers arcam - I'm well pleased with the purchase. It is, along with Deep End, my fave of the recent releases and to get it for that price was very surprising to me. As for the Giclee V Screenprint debate, it doesn't really bother me what process is used as long as I like it. I have only recently purchased some Giclee's - some David Choes' - and they're as good as any of the screenprints that I own to date. It's all about the image at the end of the day..... And as for the Baldwin effect on Neate.... highly unlikely in my mind.....

Neate's Cold War for ยฃ1400!!, by ABC on Sept 5, 2007 20:09:08 GMT 1, AAARRRGGGHHH not the old Giclee debate again. Can't we just start a thread and keep the discussion to that, its boring and seems to pop up on every thread going. Who cares what medium is used, Oil, Acrylic, Water colour, silk screen, giclee, s**t, piss, blood, spunk all these mediums have been used by artists from all walks of life but at the end of the day surely it comes down to the image that is created and nothing more.

Neate's Cold War for ยฃ1400!!, by scibby on Sept 5, 2007 21:07:00 GMT 1, In defence of Dan Baldwin being lambasted and comparing him to doom and gloom, his last print sold out, so is Disney Horror 2... very few Disney Horror 1 remaining.... no new prints in sight for the time being.

Neate's Cold War for ยฃ1400!!, by dgb133 on Sept 5, 2007 21:09:30 GMT 1, It's crazy to say that the only thing that matters is the image. The medium definitely plays a part in the price of things. That's why the painting sells for more than the print. And sorry guys, ;D but when someone wants 6,000 us dollars of my hard earned money I'm not handing it over to them if they're going to give me an epson print, I don't care what "image" it is. If you want to talk about the image great but this board is about auctions, prices etc. And if all your concerned about is the image buy a poster and save some money. It'll proabbly last longer anyway.
I'm just seeing everyone going crazy because prices went from absurd to realistic. Whoopee.
