How much is we the market?, by linter on May 25, 2012 22:29:36 GMT 1, just out of curiosity, what do you imagine would happen to prices of the art we love if this forum and EB went out of business tomorrow? would i be able to pick up a banksy or dran 'learning to fly' for a song or what? one school of thought might say, anyone with major-auction standing would continue on, while the vast majority would suffer, but i guess it'd all depend on how much we are the drivers and whether a suddenly scattered marketforce could somehow regroup and carry on ... i dunno. anyone care to idly speculate?

How much is we the market?, by xmyart on May 26, 2012 10:36:45 GMT 1, If this forum and EB vanished, someone on here would be fast on the next forum and things would go on as before. Would just create an easy to fill gap in the market for a few weeks. Theres my idle speculation anyways :-)

How much is we the market?, by Dr Plip on May 26, 2012 10:47:13 GMT 1, The internet has certainly made it easier to discover and purchase new art/prints, etc.
Think back to the old days of having to be on gallery mailing and contact lists. Then trying to see the image before you purchased it. It seems like the stone age now.
Having said that, with more and more artists using online social media (Twitter, FB, etc), it's starting to feel like you have to "play the game" in order to keep up with all of the latest news, offers, and competitions.

i know my secret fear, for what i own now, and my secret hope, for what i'd like to own but can't now afford.
one day i do think it'll be realized. in a few years, give or take, a new movement will sweep the scene, this one will fall by the wayside or at least diminish greatly, forums such as these won't attract a following of the current size and will eventually be as dust in the wind. that's the way of the world, always has been, always will be.
that's why, if you're thinking even medium term, it makes sense to not only buy what you love but also to buy what stands at least a half-assed chance of surviving the decline.
My next thread topic? Among street and urban artists, who has had major auction exposure, besides banksy ... ?
