Most overrated and underrated artists?, by mmmike on Jun 8, 2012 11:48:32 GMT 1, Thought it would be interesting to hear some opinions on who people think are the most overrated and underrated street / urban artists. Maybe after we get a bunch of opinions we can set up polls and vote.
My list is off the top of my head so likely will change. I have not included Mr. Brainwash as overrated because I don't think he is rated very high as an artist by most people but rather more of a cash cow or novelty. But I'd like to hear other opinions as well.

IMO.
Overrated. Parla. and numerous others pushed by so called "Galleries" of the moment even though they have ZERO talent.
Underrated. Rose Popay.
I'll get me coat.

Stik - has to be THE hyped artist of 2012. The flippers dream of 2012. His last show had to be one of the most boring and one dimensional shows I have ever seen. His work raises a smile on the street, but why anybody would spend four figures on his prints and originals beggars belief. Sorry Stik fans...but i'll see you in the next queue for one of his print releases! $$$$$ 
Nick Walker - Is it still 2008?!
Blek Le Rat - Maybe a pioneer, but he has become stale over the years and if it wasn't for Banksy, would he have ever risen out of mediocrity?! Has a place in street art history, but he hasn't pushed any boundaries for years. Mona Lisa with a spray can???! And people give Mr Brainwash a hard time. Like a few of his pieces though..but the majority is bland and is as thought provoking as reading the Sun newspaper.
Penny - Crazy stencil skills, and I respect that. But his work is more boring than watching the England football team in action.
Eelus - 'Nuff said.
Slinkachu - Bit of fun but never understood why people would spend thousands on the work.
Beejoir - Looks like a failed A-Level arts project
Pure Evil - Mediocrity as it's best, it sells well and won a team on the Apprentice a challenge. So what do I know, other than it would never make my wall. Nice guy though.

I suppose it depends on the criteria for over/under-rated though. Is it based on how much it costs to pick up a print/og. Or an opinion on talent compared to hype.
Ie - Adam Neate and Ian Francis aren't as widely popular as people like D*Face etc, but their work commands top dollar and they have very loyal fans & collectors.

Stik's work is absolutely terribly in my eyes, even on the streets. To see his piece next to inkies at upfest on the weekend was laughable. Blek, yes he has a place in syreet art history but thats as far as it goes for me, his last lot of work was poor, straight up not nice to look at! Stick Tracey Emin in the over rated pile while your at it!
In my opinion I wouldn't place Walker or Beejoir in there both have done some really great work in the past.
Underrated wise the likes of jago, herakut and Logan Hicks spring to mind.

Think he's the street art equivalent to free jazz. Very technical and clever, lots of concept etc, but hugely boring to look at. Might look nice on a Paperchase diary but thats about it.
Underrated - Isaac Cordal, just because when you compare to Slinkachu prices its almost laughable, and I think his work is really individual and always raises a smile.

On a side note...
I was going to add Remi Rough on the 'over' list..
I have to say, all of his recent collabs with other artists have pushed his technique and style to another level.
I am excited to see his work in the new show. The promo image for the show looks amazing. That image has depth and dimension. Not so flat and 2D like everything before. Seems Remi has found his legs.
I also hope we get a print release of the promo image for the show.

First that comes to mind is Nick Walker, keeps repeating himself and people keep being excited about it, always liked the TMA concept, but even that goes lame after a while. Same goes for Stik, if he had done one serie of these stikpuppets it would be kinda funny, now it is just childish.
Two others are miss bugs and prefab77, esthetics of these artists works just never do it for me (except for that exploding phonebooth, really liked that concept).

Anthony Sneed
Aakash Nihalani

Overrated:

Remi Rough - Has been painting since the invention of the spray can, but you can't tell. King of self promotion, watching him try and 'sell himself' and his art to Marsea of New Image Art at the first Monkier Art Fair was uncomfortable yet compulsive viewing. I don't think she was impressed. Neither am I.
C215 - Hits the streets hard, but i'm getting bored of the same old formula of finding a photo, cutting a stencil and adding splashes of spray paint. Rinse and repeat.
Faile - newer work just hasn't hit the heights of the older stuff.
Zevs - Liquidated series was great to begin with, until it was repeated time and again. Suffers from the 'Nick Walker' syndrome. Still has potential though.

I think there's some confusion between under/overrated and under/over hyped
Quite a few of the artists listed as being underrated have sell out shows and their works (if you can get hold of them) sell for a serious amount of money.
They may not be on the radar as much as lets say Stik, Dolk, MBW or Fairey but sure doesn't mean there not respected and admired.
