Most overrated and underrated artists?, by seasideindian on Jun 9, 2012 19:18:37 GMT 1, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Art should always make you smile and should not be bought to flip ! Rant over Over rated - Mr Brainwash. Under rated - Ben Slow, Joesph Loughborough, Herakut, Mode 2 but in general artists who are actually drawing as opposed to stencil ( yes you must draw to make up the stencil, I know ). There are so many talent artists out there it's forums like this that are hopefully attracting peoples attention and raising their profiles.

Nope Banksy just spends a retarded amount of money on PR, remember when Nick Waler did the same, in all the magazines, and on the front covers, it wasn't for artistic ability!

I think it depends a lot if you see his stuff on the streets and are into the more graphic design / font side of life.
personally I've seen them on my wanders since 2005 and love them on the streets and brightening up dull / run-down areas. I also personally liked his crappy paint pot tags around London (harking back to his train vandal days). He then moved in words or 'slogans' which are a bit hit and miss but that's the nature of slogans. Not a big fan in galleries etc. I don;t think he's ever claimied to be a great artist. remember that he was a common vandal before, and then a self taught screen printer.
I have all his early prints but I must admit I gave up a while ago...

Just echoing what a few have said already:
Herbert Baglione
- Modern Brazilian art nouveau, at it's best on pavements and streets. Never helped himself by getting deported from the USA for not having the correct visa and having his first show in London at the time the credit crunch began....
and Ernest Pignon-Ernest
- surely the godfather of modern day street art? Practically unrecognised in the UK and USA. I especially loved his telephone series from the late 90's

Most overrated and underrated artists?, by butteronehalfcab on Jun 11, 2012 9:17:02 GMT 1, it does seem that a lot of people are just reacting to prices of art rather than the art itself.
i don't know anyone going around saying stik or eine are incredible artists and ''my goodness they're doing amazing things'' but I do know a lot of people myself included who love seeing their work up around london. I don't rate stik that highly but i love seeing his work when i go for a walk or late at night when i'm on my way home, the same goes for a lot of eine's work. I could see his 'strangest day' and 'scary' every day and love it each time but i don't rate him as an artist in the same way of someone like neate or ian francis.
but i do love lists so carry on chaps.

i agree w/ your take on stik. plain and simple, he's a day brightener on a long night's walk, kind of like keith haring was, and for that reason alone, i like him and can see his appeal. i might also argue that his lines are incredibly emotive for how simple they are, which is some neat feat in itself.

Most overrated and underrated artists?, by Deleted on Jun 13, 2012 12:58:19 GMT 1, This interview of Artiste Ouvrier is very funny (in French) - www.theground.fr/dailleurs/204-artiste-ouvrier-l-quon-ne-me-compare-pas-a-banksy-r.html
A short/fast translation.
"Banksy invited me at London for the Cans Festival, he is doing great stencil. But he is just an entreprise called POW. He has plenty of people working for him, cutting, painting, etc. Continuing playing the revolutionary and anonymous cards while everybody knows he is called Robin Cunninghan, born in 1974, is totally fake. He is nice but he could produce art as Robin with his own stencils, I would find Banksy great ! But he is just a brand name so nobody should compare me to Banksy. I have an ethic, I cut and paint myself. I am alone [...]."
"Paris Pochoirs 2003, it was a great show full of stencil artists, and with the return of Blek le Rat; who is a true [asshole][jerk][fool], he's got his head in the clouds. He disappeared for 20 years, and suddenly we bring him back, Banksy said something about him and now he is so big-headed and sell at crazy prices. He totally missed the point."
