Advice please - selling to a stranger overseas!!!!, by elwheel on Jun 19, 2012 22:28:15 GMT 1, Appreciate your thoughts folks.
A member of another forum contacted me and expressed a wish to buy one of my prints. The guy has no posts on the other forum and only joined this month. I sent him pictures of the print and he said lets do it. Wants to pay more than $1k plus shipping to LA. Not sure why I'm being cautious but I am. I remember a recent thread about perfect prints being posted after paypal payment has cleared, then the receiver opens a dispute with a random made-up excuse of no print being received or fake damages, retrieves their payment and snags the print at the same time.
What is the best payment method? He suggested paypal which is grand with me but should I insist on him gifting it? Is there a better way for me to process this transaction of selling a print internationally with a complete stranger? I don't want to unwittingly walk into a scam.
Many thanks for your thoughts.

Advice please - selling to a stranger overseas!!!!, by Michael Jacob on Jun 20, 2012 3:00:08 GMT 1, Ive heard about the same paypal issues. Maybe look at selling through ebay? It might offer you a little more "seller" security. best of luck

Advice please - selling to a stranger overseas!!!!, by Michael Jacob on Jun 20, 2012 3:01:40 GMT 1, another option would be to see if a fellow LA forum member would be willing to help. you could send it to them, then have them do the transaction with the buyer?

Advice please - selling to a stranger overseas!!!!, by searchandrescue on Jun 20, 2012 9:57:01 GMT 1, I understand your worried about the risk of fwding your bank details, all they need are your sort, a/c, and IBAN. I use this methodology a lot for business and private transactions. Always leave off shipping for a few days to ensure funds are cleared, not just visible! Often scammers nick a cheque book and pay into your a/c then tell you they have done a transfer. The cheque bounces but you could have shipped by that point.

Advice please - selling to a stranger overseas!!!!, by origo on Jun 20, 2012 10:31:38 GMT 1, On the other hand, banktransfer leaves the buyer without any options at all should the deal somehow go wrong.
PayPal is unfortunately the right way to do it, especially if you donยดt know each other in any way. Just make sure you have tracking, pictures of the item.

Advice please - selling to a stranger overseas!!!!, by origo on Jun 20, 2012 10:52:21 GMT 1, Sure, but in my opinion you get the best deal if both buyer and seller feels safe.
Thereยดs another thread going on with a member being ripped for a 6000 USD banktransfer and he doesnยดt have a lot of options.
Not saying that it would be the case here at all, but personally I wouldnยดt make a transfer unless I know the person very well.

Advice please - selling to a stranger overseas!!!!, by unlkleandy on Jun 20, 2012 11:15:11 GMT 1, Having just done a deal with Origo which was overseas (myself as the buyer) i used Paypal and paid the 4% fee to get the protection that paypal offers both parties. As much as i have a lot of faith in people there are instances when it can go bad at either end or even in transit.
I guess you have to set an amount you are happy with to send / receive as cash and stick to that and if its above use a method that offers more protection.
Also if i had to explain to missus that i transferred X amount of money and the deal went wrong she'd kill me!

Advice please - selling to a stranger overseas!!!!, by craigf on Jun 20, 2012 11:52:29 GMT 1, I just did a very high value purchase recently with the seller in the US and me in the UK. I got comfortable re them being able to give references and then put a significant amount of trust re them doing what they said they would. It all went smoothly, I am generally a trusting person and happy I didn't get burnt!

Advice please - selling to a stranger overseas!!!!, by Brushstrokes 75 on Jun 20, 2012 12:04:02 GMT 1, I don't know why people still think paypal gives you any leverage (with missing, fake stuff....)
For transactions outside ebay, paypal DOESN'T insure what you are receiving (item missing, item not what you bought or missing item..) they only insure that you received something.
Now the only problem with paypal are credit cards. In the states & in the uK too I think, you can ask for a chargeback if you feel you got fucked (in a lot of countries, like france you can only claim if someone stole your credit card). A lot of people are abusing that.....
Bank transfer is the safest way to get paid but it's more expensive than paypal & I'm not sure that your buyer will agree to that!

Advice please - selling to a stranger overseas!!!!, by elwheel on Jun 20, 2012 20:07:34 GMT 1, Thanks for all the good advice folks. The guy has now emailed and said he's happy paying either paypalgift or bank transfer - says he's a newbie and needs to build up a rep from scratch. Reckon I'll just opt for paypalgift then???

Advice please - selling to a stranger overseas!!!!, by kendo on Jun 20, 2012 20:46:26 GMT 1, I think the overiding factor is creating a level of trust. The buyer and seller should be happy to provide details so everyone is comfortable, such as name, address, email, telephone, mobile, eBay account, etc - it just allows for full transparency!
Also, the seller should be prepared to provide photographs on request, even to the point where they write your name on a piece of paper and include it within the photograph!
Is this all works out, it will help give the reassurance to proceed with a deal. If any of these factors become an issue, then I would be very vary!
Unfortunately, there will always be people out there trying to scam but I wouldn't be shy about asking a lot of questions. It might sound obvious but if it doesn't feel right, don't do it!
