Hempcrete elephants , by elephantman on May 27, 2022 21:02:13 GMT 1, The search for lighter weight elephants to put out on the streets led me to experiment with hempcrete. And while they are mcuh lighter they atke a lot more finishing, but that led me down another avenue, one where i finish things to a very high degree, and I'm very pleased with the results.
Anybody else had any experience with hempcrete? It is normally a construction material, making for very warm and cosy houses.

Elephantman street sculpture, by elephantman on May 1, 2017 22:26:05 GMT 1, Hi Met,
Why 'We Are People'? because an elephant needs to be re-classified as a person, a non-human person but a person nonetheless. Humans are under the illusion that they are separate from animals, that their sense of self is different to ours. The Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness says otherwise: www.newscientist.com/article/mg21528836-200-animals-are-conscious-and-should-be-treated-as-such/
Is it anthropomorphising? It is impossible to understand anything unless through one's human perception filters. Perhaps I am being a spokesperson on their behalf, but if they can be re-classified then they can have legal rights inaccessible to them as animals, which are no better than 'things' under the law. They are also refugees; without guidance they have been leaving the countries with the most poaching and finding their way to places where they are safer. Elephants, while being recognisably intelligent on human terms are also intelligent in ways we cannot classify or comprehend.
Being an animal is definitely not good enough. Under our noses we are overseeing an unprecedented attack on the natural world on which we ultimately depend. Humans cannot thrive unless we learn to respect the creatures we share this planet with. 90% of animals over a couple of kilos on this planet are domestic livestock, most of which are not living on an picture box farm but in horrible circumstances before their inevitable demise. Quite apart from animal agriculture being the single largest driver of climate change and deforestation, it is also the the greatest amount of cruelty inflicted by one species upon others in the history of the planet - something we will look back upon with horror. Being an animal, is definitely not good enough.

Nuart Aberdeen, by elephantman on Mar 4, 2017 12:51:05 GMT 1, Hi elephantman, received your email, afraid this year is really restricted with regards to walls etc, pretty much the whole city is heritage listed and we're working hard to secure enough walls as it is. In saying that, I think your project would be much better received if it were unsanctioned. It wouldnt leave much for the viewer to consider if it were curated into a project. I imagine this would leave kids and adults alike with a sense of wonder if they stumbled across them, this would perhaps be lost as part of an official program. I guess the benefit of official/curated platforms is the costs are covered and a primed audience delivered. The negative, the change in context can seriously disempower the work. I'd go stick them around and see what happens :-) Thanks for getting back to me Reader, it makes sense what you say. Unsanctioned is the way I have done it so far, so why not proceed that way. I put one on one of the plinths outside the William Morris museum in Walthamstow in May 2016. As the whole thing is split into different departments, each department thought another was responsible for the sculpture, and didn't question it. I met someone from there organisation about a month later who explained this and she was surprised to find out it was actually graffiti. It's still there today, so clearly they are happy with it!

Nuart Aberdeen, by elephantman on Mar 3, 2017 11:43:06 GMT 1, Hi Turntored,
Do you know of any suitable places to put elephants in Aberdeen? This would be vacant pillar tops which can serve as plinths.
Like this: www.instagram.com/elephantmansculpture/
As it's organised, could even get some legitimate locations rather than having to do it guerrilla style.

Elephantman street sculpture, by elephantman on Mar 3, 2017 10:48:03 GMT 1, Hi Elephant,
It is most generous, and kind of you to offer to do such a thing. I guess it depends on your attachment to your name whether you want to give it up. I could not conceivably call myself anything else, considering that I've only made elephant sculptures, though I've done plenty of painting and murals under my own name, and I did try to sculpt a bird figure once, but that sits in the yard unfinished. It's been elephants all the way for 20+ years and I've only recently worked out why.
I do not want to impose a change in name upon you and while I do really appreciate the offer, and more than anything, the place it's coming from, I am easy about it. If I google Elephantman, I don't find my work but John Merrick, a Jamaican singer and stuff about the stage play, so confusion and profrusion reigns!
Thanks again
E.Man

Elephantman street sculpture, by elephantman on Mar 1, 2017 18:41:21 GMT 1, It was truly great to meet you Doyle, so glad you like the elephants, and double delighted that you bought one!! That's two exclamation marks, don't do that for everyone. They say that the number of exclamation marks used is in inverse proportion to the level of sanity present in the writer at the moment of writing.

Staying on Liverpool street - what to see and where to eat, by elephantman on Feb 28, 2017 23:17:53 GMT 1, You're round the corner from Brick Lane, always worth a stroll around there to check out the street art. As Bagpuss stated already. It's a vibrant area.

The easiest ones to see are in Camden or Brick lane in London, but there are about 30 out there, mostly east London.

Elephantman street sculpture, by elephantman on Feb 27, 2017 22:41:17 GMT 1, Hi All,
I thought I'd start a thread about what I'm doing out there. Essentially I fix elephant sculptures where I see a vacant plinth. Though the first ones weren't so high up, but I lost most of them, too easy to get to and to remove. I've worked on my fixing method and locations and they seem to be holding up better.
imageupload
Lately they've been in groups and high enough that they are at least awkward to get to.
upload image
You can see more on Instagram: www.instagram.com/elephantmansculpture/
I've been carving variations of this shape of elephant for more than 20 years and it has gone through several iterations in terms of materials used. These ones are cast concrete, 62cm high for the bigger ones.
These are bunch of carved elephants in an exhibition of my painting back on 1997. I don't know why it is only elephants that I have made. I did try carving a bird once, but it remains unfinished.
Perhaps it is that I feel a little bit like I'm on a mission. I cannot be Elephantman if I am not trying to change things for the elephants in some way. I have an ambitious plan for an installation of 30,000 elephants to tour the cities of China, where most of the ivory ends up. these elephants would be made of an earth/resin mix and be produced by young people in China helped by terms of facilitators. In this way as many as 100,000 young people will have a hands on role in an effort to persuade people that they no longer want ivory, that ivory is some person's teeth, that ivory is utterly gross. Elephants are people, don't take their teeth.
Mission or not, I do get an enormous buzz from putting the elephants out there. With a hi-viz vest and hard hat, I'm obviously meant to be doing it, no-one seems to imagine that I don't have permission.
Anyway hope you like
