hype and new prints/must have prints, by kingleopald on Apr 12, 2012 17:14:28 GMT 1, I think the thing that separates the few from the herd is being original . shepard fairey, banksy and Damien hirst were all the first to do exactly what they do, Imitators follow but they don't have the same voracity and will never be as sought after The three you mention are the imitators but do it better than the originators sometimes.
I agree with you kimble. The three mentioned did nothing 'greatly' original, they were just able to present it in an original way.
They also had a bit of fortune. As with everything, luck is as significant as talent. They struck chords at the right moment and once the hype monkey started jumping they could do no wrong.

Mau Mau out canvas-ing! , by kingleopald on May 4, 2010 16:09:57 GMT 1, Been surfing in Devon and spotted a lovely little political defacement on the way home this morning....
Had my suspicions which a look at www.mau-mau.co.uk has confirmed (This was a non-discriminatory action - all the parties got tarred from what I saw!)

Mau Mau print , by kingleopald on Feb 12, 2010 14:41:10 GMT 1, Just a heads up....
Missed out on the Mau mau pole dancing copper print and gave SOS a quick call earlier to see if they had any ideas (seeing as I've got every print he's done to date, don't want to break the habit!!). Got told there are actually four left (three now!).
I pass this on to you as my good deed for the day (before I made the call I saw one already being hawked on the bay for ยฃ195....)

Mau Mau video, by kingleopald on Dec 9, 2009 22:04:59 GMT 1, Was a portrait. Nice. Xmas pressie (embargoed from photographing until the 25th in case spoils the surprise!)....
Yeah, had to go for the Reaper. Saw the piece at the Eddie lock show a couple of weeks ago and was reminded of a very typically Mau Mau comment on the financial woes of this year!!

Mau Mau video, by kingleopald on Dec 8, 2009 13:54:14 GMT 1, Had to go down to devon to pick up a canvass and ended up hanging around for a bit. Tees look really nice in the flesh , and hand printed each one a little Mau Mau original! I picked up the bees and the Reaper. Had a couple of his Sewerside designs back in the day and wore them for many years till they literally fell apart!!

Sewerside Chronicles author at Brighton event, by kingleopald on May 6, 2009 14:09:03 GMT 1, One for the Brightonians... Tim Lay (author of the excellent Sewerside Chronicles) is reading at this Brighton festival event tomorrow night (Thursday).
Grit Lit Presents Night of Stories from the Edge
โEver stopped to wonder just what youโd see if you peeled back the pretty picture on the front of that Brighton postcard?โฆ โ
GritLit presents an evening of stranger-than-fiction fact and weirder-than-life fiction, bringing home grown writing talent to the fringes of the Brighton Festival.
The night will be decidedly un-luvvy, the extracts short. Redroaster Coffeehouse, St James St, Brighton. 7.45-10pm.

Mau Mau in Japan - 2nd May, by kingleopald on Apr 29, 2009 11:43:22 GMT 1, Went round to his studio to pick up a commission and saw some of the canvasses he was working on for this show. Stylewise, he's definitely stepping it up to the next level - developing that lick he was tinkering with on 12 Days pieces. When he's stopped his global galavanting would be nice to see the dude grace us with a UK show!

Financial Fools Day 1 April 2009, by kingleopald on Mar 31, 2009 17:21:08 GMT 1, Funny how everyone is talking about how tomorrow will be a 'riot'. What's interesting is that the press has gradually been building this up since early last week to the point where everyone now expects there to be violence tomorrow.
Yet again, protesters have a bad name before they even start protesting and the press have set the scene so if it does kick off the police will be excused for storming in like some quasi-military storm trooping force and cracking a few heads. As per usual that'll grab the headlines and Middle England will be able to get back to quietly whingeing at home about the way things are.
It's not a crime to be angry and we have a right to voice that anger. I don't know how we became so complacent in this country and why protest has become so demonised.
The sad thing is that violence tomorrow gives the politicians/bankers a convenient excuse to ignore the message - but then what else is new? (1 million + marching peacefully through London against the Iraq war in 2003 anyone?...).

Street Art Photographers., by kingleopald on Mar 11, 2009 17:20:09 GMT 1, Richard Braine took some fantastic street pics in London 1960s/70s. Some of his stuff is on PYMCA and I've heard he's been talking with SOS about releasing a print later in the year.

Have You Read?, by kingleopald on Mar 9, 2009 14:57:48 GMT 1, Did you actually read Don Quixote? Man, that book is like wading through porridge! Agree with you on Book of Dave though. I'd also like to suggest The Sewerside Chronicles by Tim lay. One of my favourite books of last year.
