My Stencils!, by reados on May 13, 2007 20:33:02 GMT 1, i have redone my first stencil onto a canvas, i tried to put a bit of texture in the back ground rather than keep it white.

My Stencils!, by BK83 on May 13, 2007 21:13:53 GMT 1, Hey man looks good, but a couple things.
think about your placement -- there seems to be a lot of negative space here. sure, negative space can be an aesthetic but it's hard to do well. so you might want to think this for your next one. it might even mean trying a new canvas size -- more oblong than square due to the height of the board.
also -- is this all stencil? I think you're selling yourself short by making all those stencil layers and just laying them down. think about incorporating some oil/acrylic paints for added detail -- you'll find that it will look a lot more natural, right now it looks like you've just used the posterize tool in photoshop.
most importantly keep reworking it -- each time you'll be more pleased than your last attempt.
keep up the great work.

My Stencils!, by reados on May 13, 2007 21:39:28 GMT 1, hey j thanks for the advice, i think your right about the composition, an oblong canvas is probably the way forward.
just explain the adding acrylic, do you mean use one layer of stencil the fill in the colour by hand?

My Stencils!, by BK83 on May 14, 2007 5:15:32 GMT 1, yeh, exactly -- sometimes it can be a really cool effect -- even if it's just really roughly done. I would even say paint over the top of this stencil in the areas that could use acrylic and then lay down the positive (black layer) of the image again. That way you'll know exactly where to paint the colors. The Stencil is really cool.

Your right. Wills bear is certainly in trouble sooner than mine. Seems like my glacier has only just started to thaw

My Stencils!, by Ripper1331 on May 15, 2007 19:39:46 GMT 1, You shouldn't need to protect it when using gloss/semi gloss spray paint but if using flat you should coat it with a flat varnish spray since that will make it easier to clean.
Just a tip that not all spray paints work well together and pieces using mixed brands/types of paint, or cheap paint, will start to crack over the years.

My Stencils!, by BK83 on May 15, 2007 21:12:43 GMT 1, Yeh Ripper -- I have noticed that with some of my older pieces using the old-school Krylon -- the white seems to have faded slightly -- some minor kind of evaporation of sorts.... I strictly use the Montana action these days and a buddy of mine at the studio has that stuff out of Italy -- Bella something.... ? I dont know -- great for flesh tones....

My Stencils!, by Ripper1331 on May 15, 2007 23:44:59 GMT 1, There are 2 Montana's Spanish and German - they are not the same at all.
I use both if I can't get Belton, as it's hard to get colors here in the US, but never mix them
