Urban / Street art home schooling, by damo on May 7, 2020 11:01:54 GMT 1, Mine are similar age and we made some flower measuring sticks out of old decking boards, some stencils and paint, which they loved doing. More exciting use of face masks than the weekly trip to Sainsburys! Bit of trial and error but they got there in the end (boards clearly way too big for the pots mind), and we just burnt all the fails in a fire pit. You'll need some cans, card for stencils, and varnish to finish but other than that anything to paint on really will do the job. An old Eelus stencil proved most popular with my two..
(Apologies, as I am very conscious my contributions to UAA are now primarily DIY and kids art! God I'm getting old/boring)

Banksy Welcome Mat, by damo on Apr 23, 2020 17:35:44 GMT 1, Iโm impressed. I canโt put up a shelf Great setting You could lay some tiles to fill in the dead space at the sides to finish the look and also look like those 70s tile tables www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/320318592219259163/ Ta, i did actually toy with laying it on sand (i have some of that in the shed as well) as I felt that was relevant to story behind it. Will do that, lay tiles or paint the base under it at some stage to help it stand out. Like the idea of a orange border to match the wording (as someone suggested) but can't get to DIY store at the moment and was getting annoyed with it just being in a box.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by damo on Apr 23, 2020 17:02:30 GMT 1, Finished my coffee table. Its old glass and offcuts from the shed but I'm quite proud of it and it'll do for now. I didn't really know what i was doing/its rough and ready, so I wont be expecting a call from Habitat any time soon.
Just need win a few Peckham Rocks postcards to use as coasters now!

Banksy Welcome Mat, by damo on Apr 19, 2020 19:45:07 GMT 1,
Spent afternoon attempting to make a coffee table for my Welcome mat. Still need to do the legs properly (its supported by a little side table at present) but reasonably pleased with it, as its only meant to be a temporary solution. Wanted something aged as i thought that would suit, and tbh was reliant on the wood i had laying around anyway. Glass is off the top of an old Ikea unit.

Coronavirus effect on the art market?, by damo on Mar 16, 2020 23:40:07 GMT 1, Any chance we can change the name of this thread? Iโm sure it was a valid, and fairly innocent, question initially, but it feels unimportant, irrelevant and pretty heartless right now tbh.

Bob & Roberta Smith Ltd Ed Print - ยฃ25, by damo on Nov 19, 2019 19:59:38 GMT 1, Mine arrived today, finally. Its really good for ยฃ25 tbh (with the free notepad and even COA is a copy of the print. Has original ยฃ150 price tag still on tube. Not sure quite how long its been in the (very tight) tube though. Feels like its going to need a bit of industrial flattening! Who delivered it please?
Parcelforce

Thierry Noir ๐จ๐ต Berlin Wall โข French Street Arist , by damo on Nov 9, 2019 19:10:08 GMT 1, They were signing postcards to about 1630-1700. So there was a chance that people would get something. Not many people left empty handed.
Agreed. No one went home empty handed and the reason it took so long was purely that Stik in particular took so long to speak to everyone individually, and sign more than enough books in addition to the official postcards. A member of staff did point out that theyโd (Stik and Noir) suggested no one who had queued and waited should be charged for postcards but likewise the museum needed to recoup the costs of printing so they had to charge. All of 75p! No idea why that wasnโt ramped up a bit for a good cause tbh!
They also helped us to help out a lovely fella in the queue (with an extra postcard) after he had to leave after 3 hours, which was a nice touch. And my lad is still buzzing from having finally met his โfavourite artistโ (although tbf that was Invader last week, very fickle these 9yr olds!)

Thierry Noir ๐จ๐ต Berlin Wall โข French Street Arist , by damo on Nov 9, 2019 11:23:39 GMT 1, Will be really annoyed if that is the case. Iโm headed down now with my 9 yr old lad and 12 yr old daughter who both love a bit of Stik. He only wants a postcard and I fancied a walk around the museum but why advertise it as 11am and then roll it out another way? Understandable if it was a gallery but itโs IWM on a Saturday, and itโs itโs Stik and Noir. It was always going to appeal to kids! Any signing is going to have a queue before the start time. Theyโve done it as fairly as possible, giving tickets to the first people there. Itโs a museum not used to this kind of event. Give them a break. Just take your kids to see the artwork.
Fair enough, plus kids have made hours later than planned so not really sure what Iโm moaning about. Looking forward to seeing walls regardless.

BANKSY Gross Domestic Productโข, by damo on Nov 8, 2019 18:33:44 GMT 1, I have to say (I don't), Adam Bloom's been quite polite and friendly when dealing with the art-folk on Twitter. And there's a cute interview with him here, where there's a moment that gives the impression he's quite fast at dealing with large numbers (2:08). That kid would make an ace judge for the next round. If we couldn't amuse him with our witty responses, we'd have no chance with her!

Thierry Noir ๐จ๐ต Berlin Wall โข French Street Arist , by damo on Nov 8, 2019 0:32:53 GMT 1, Pretty sure itโs an optional purchase, and for a charity. If you love Stik head down there and pick up a poster for ยฃ60, if you donโt, donโt.
Itโs not too flippable which is no bad thing to my mind, but Iโm not too keen on some of the criticism here. Itโs up to them how many they want to have had to stand around signing and Iโm guessing poster design is from IWM not the artists directly. If there are none left when you get there admire the wall and then have a wander around the museum, and enjoy it for what it is. Good use of a Sat morning either way in my book.

Thierry Noir ๐จ๐ต Berlin Wall โข French Street Arist , by damo on Nov 4, 2019 17:42:46 GMT 1, I was planning to head down Saturday morning anyway, prior to the news of the poster, but if I can grab extras I will. Might do a giveaway if I can only get the one on top of my own.
To pick a winner I may ask a silly question re, I donโt know, maybe; โdoes art matter?โ. If you win it though you have to ensure every person on the forum is then subsequently informed ;-)
Joking apart if I can get spares I will.

BANKSY Gross Domestic Productโข, by damo on Nov 1, 2019 14:06:36 GMT 1, What are the odds that none of us win? Pretty high I suspect. We be waiting like fools! FOOLS!!!
How many people actively post on here, at best 300? How many valid orders did they get, probably 175,000. Thats a 0.2% chance of anyone on here getting the email. Was a disproportionate number of winners for Sale Ends on here, but profile of that release was significantly lower than this one.
Admittedly I am still checking emails every ten minutes just in case.

BANKSY Gross Domestic Productโข, by damo on Oct 31, 2019 7:52:11 GMT 1, Hello all, this is just a note to let you know that the Red Cross Bookshop in Palmers Green, London is doing a silent auction for one of my rat prints starting next week, which includes provenance in the form of a parking ticket from Croydon on the last Sunday night, and whatever photos you require to be convinced it's kosher. Please chuck in your best bid for this worthy cause. Thanks J
Nice touch, well done. And thatโs my local book store to boot! Will pop in and get a generous bid down.

BANKSY Gross Domestic Productโข, by damo on Oct 29, 2019 16:56:37 GMT 1, Ive been checking my junk folder every few hours, and I never normally look in there.
No joy re GDP... but i have seemingly won a couple of cars, been found by a man who wants me to help him hide ยฃ10m, might be a bitcoin millionaire, won a Dyson hoover, and been personally invited to 'chat' by a local 'hot lady' who is looking for company, 'whilst hubby is away'.
Wow, and i was only hoping for a print!

Early Banksy Art, by damo on Oct 27, 2019 22:47:56 GMT 1, I was actually at DMU from 94-98 myself and this is first I've heard of any Banksy link. If true, and Im not quite sure when they went up, but for a couple of years there was a whole road of builders boards covering a site alongside the canal, about 100 yards from the front of the student union bar (the path from the bar to the Hinkley Road to anyone who knows that town around that time). Used to quite regularly see some cool work on those.
Would have been too pissed to take photos most of the time but should try and dig out some old snaps... just in case!

BANKSY Gross Domestic Productโข, by damo on Oct 17, 2019 8:54:21 GMT 1, My 72 yr old Mum entered this morning, she just sent me her answer to the question. Annoyingly itโs far funnier than mine was (albeit for a different product). Sheโs told me if she wins it I can have it when she dies.
I have told her Iโm desperate for something, but not that desperate. If she gets it... I hope I donโt anytime soon!

BANKSY Gross Domestic Productโข, by damo on Oct 16, 2019 19:37:06 GMT 1, Banksquait for me because I love it, but to be honest thatโs a long shot (partly because couldnโt think of anything too funny to say!) so am way more excited re the welcome mat. ยฃ500 to a great cause, and tbh Iโm not framing it... itโs going by the front door where it will be unnoticed by most, and walked on by all. That feels appropriate considering the underlying message, and a good sobering everyday reminder for the family and I. Bit gutted I canโt get a can though but Iโm not taking any risks to try and wrangle that too. Itโs been worth the wait though eh! If they are genuine lifejackets used washed up on beaches and some people have died during crossings wearimg them , would rather frame than treading on their souls
Thatโs a fair shout, I will give it more thought. My immediate intention wasnโt flippant, I like the idea of having a house full of art that most people comment on and me being able to explain that they missed the most important piece when they walked over it coming in. Not far removed to what I think he tried to achieved with the final shop window in Croydon. I think my kids would get that message. Will give it more thought though, either way delighted to have contributed to the cause.

BANKSY Gross Domestic Productโข, by damo on Oct 15, 2019 11:19:39 GMT 1, Has anyone emailed info@grossdomesticproduct.com to ask when it opens as I'm done with f5ing. Yep nothing happens despite whats been reported here. Thats not quite true, when it first went up I got a note straight back stating 'Online shop will open in a week or two. Thanks'. I think that was a standard response at that time as others reported similar, and i hadn't even actually asked that question outright. I have tried it once again since and had no response but it was certainly what was happening for first 24 hours or so.

BANKSY Gross Domestic Productโข, by damo on Oct 9, 2019 16:44:05 GMT 1, I went down there again this afternoon to see it in a calmer environment than my first visit last week. Aside from the work itself I was struck by the engagement that casual observers were taking. There were two old girls discussing the life jacket and the scandal behind that, and two kids discussing the boy under the โcursorโ attack, and how that probably related to cyber bullying. Iโm making sweeping assumptions here, but neither couple seemed to be gallery visiting types and yet the debate they engaged in was as interesting and nuanced as any youโd hear elsewhere.
We can patiently (or otherwise) wait for the shop to open (Jesus Iโd love one of those cans) but thatโs not the point is it. Heโs done it again. Art can make you think, and should be accessible to all. Nobody (currently) does that better than Banksy. Simple as.

Sweet Toof - framing an artists palate, by damo on Mar 10, 2019 13:21:07 GMT 1, I've had one ages but want to get it framed up now. Anyone got any good examples of their framing jobs for any artists palate pieces to inspire me?
Its a fairly inexpensive piece so i don't want to go too mad on the framing costs, especially if DIY is an option on this one. Ta

Jamie Reid ๐ฌ๐ง Sex Pistols โข God Save the Queen โข Collage, by damo on Mar 2, 2019 16:42:45 GMT 1, Popped in for a viewing at our local auction house and was surprised to find, in among the tat and furniture, a couple of framed Jamie Reid prints ('Ragged World' and 'Buses to Nowhere') plus a couple of Stik book prints framed up with a little doodle. Not for me at this point (I already have the red Stik) but might be for someone. They are framed pressed to glass but looked in good condition. I think the auction house has based pricing on ebay, but its not their usual stuff so not hardly surprising (i think they've even mixed the Jamie Reid descriptions up in the listing here - www.southgateauctionrooms.com/auction-items/ ). Anyway thought id share, as a fair chance of a bargain for someone tomorrow afternoon knowing the usual audience for these weekly auctions.

Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel โ

, by damo on Feb 7, 2019 18:32:51 GMT 1, Depends on what kinda stuff you are looking to do ? There's a endless list of historical stuff Though I am not a religious man, can't go with out checking some of that out. Plus natural sites (like Dead Sea), architecture, and of course street art. I am open to suggestions. I am thinking 3 days at The Walled Off.... And maybe 4 days elsewhere (few more if needed). Open to ideas, was thinking Tel Aviv for 1 or 2 nights? We did 2 nights in Tel Aviv, 2 at the Walled Off & 3 in Jerusalem (and took a car out to the Dead Sea/Ein Gedi/Masada for one of those days). Brilliant trip tbh, but if i went again i would skip Tel Aviv completely (everyone is different but it did nothing for us). I'd just split time between Palestine and Jerusalem (do Walled Off first, it'll change how you think about everything else whilst there). Too many highlights to list but when you're done with the history, the art, and the (f*&*^$d up) politics... try Machne Yehuda market in Jerusalem, it has some great micro brewery bars that stay open long into the night.
