The Banksy tag, by RetroCanvas on Mar 15, 2007 22:29:04 GMT 1, I think that the tag on Barcode was done with a rubber stamp. Not many other additions had it. I assume that it was because POW introduced their stamp as an authentication method???

Creating Art or Destroying the Landscape?, by RetroCanvas on Jul 11, 2006 12:31:20 GMT 1, Cheers gm, can see it now.
My first impressions of it are that it isn't a great piece.
Probably because its of a corpse. I can't decide what message Banksy wants to get accross in this one but hey. Perhaps there is no message but I would have a few guesses.

Creating Art or Destroying the Landscape?, by RetroCanvas on Jul 10, 2006 12:55:14 GMT 1, Still cant see it :-(
I need someone to host the image on something other than banksy's site. So a link to the image won't do.
Perhaps i'll just have to wait until my t'internet comes back.

What next for Banksy? , by RetroCanvas on Nov 9, 2006 21:49:31 GMT 1, ;D Following on from NuMusic saying about how Banksy is so skilled is so many different mediums of Art - What do you think he can do next? Will he stick with what we have seen from him this year? or will he surprise us by moving into different areas? More Sculpture? Just Street Work? Only Canvases?
Personally, I would like to see more vandalised masterpieces but thats probably not going to happen. I reckon that there must be some kind of stunt on the horizon involving a gallery or meuseum again too. I know he's done that already but I think this kind of activity has been why he is who he is. you know what I mean?

Any artists here?, by RetroCanvas on Dec 8, 2006 23:29:56 GMT 1, I like that, very nice.
I did a piece in a similar style commissioned by Virgin Mobile UK.
Check it out here ; retrocanvas.co.uk/branson.html
And yes, each dot was hand painted, about 2 weeks work just to paint the thing.
Looks amazing in the flesh though. I actually got to meet Mr Branson himself when the painting was hung so that was cool. :-)

Not really sure I'd call my self an artist!?

Any artists here?, by RetroCanvas on Dec 8, 2006 17:32:55 GMT 1, www.retrocanvas.co.uk
I've had a good couple of years. Managed to have my work shown in a number of mags (including FHM) and displayed at a few VW shows.
I mainly do commissions, thats why a lot of the work on my website is of popular stars and idols.
The website is a bit messy at the moment but the new one will be live in the new year. Thats what i'm working on at the moment when I have a spare minute or two.
Feedback would be great, I know it's not groundbreaking stuff but the customers are happy to get affordable originals :-)
Retro
Anyone here with a bit of artistic flair? - I should say anyone handy with a spray can or paint brush. Would be nice to see members work.

why don't we at banksy.info commission an artist, by RetroCanvas on Dec 6, 2006 13:38:56 GMT 1, It is a good idea but indeed, would be quite a difficult one.
i disagree, we are pretty much at the hands of scalpers, inept web hosting companies, incompetent staff and overpriced ebay tat. From start to finish, we are generating so much business for a few shareholders. Getting hold of a print you want is so hit and miss and time consuming. Preferential treatment dished out to 'VIP' guests etc etc. So f**k it, rather than waiting for POW to sign up elchivo and makae a killing, or alternatively, don't sign him up.. well, as a small group of individuals.. we can approach any street artist and pick and choose an image and say hey, we love this image, how about you knock up 50 oif em on cardboard or print paper and we'll give you 2.5k, this will hopefully enable them to go travelling and hit up a few more cities. It's basically what POW did in the beginning, this way it just cuts out the middleman and goes direct to the artist. There's a LOT better work out there than on the POW roster. This is the one we hope to do Which in my opinion is ten x better than most work in SG.. anyway, it's just a test to see if it would function. I think it's a cool idea to set up a cooperative, controlled by the group and fans dedicated to street art. Rather than waiting to see what POW, which pretty much dominates the market, comes up with. The idea is a good one Nu, the practicalities make it near impossible, no-one here knows each other, everyones tastes differ to a large enough degree that i really do think its a non starter, as stated the complete lack of organisation is a killer from the start. As for not seeing them on ebay the next day, its nothing that you can garantee fella, as stated you dont have a clue who the vast majority of the se people are.

why don't we at banksy.info commission an artist, by RetroCanvas on Dec 6, 2006 10:35:31 GMT 1, What did you have in mind?
I'm an artist that works mainly on a commission basis and I have done a few Banksy style pieces in the past. Not many to sell though. Just messing about. I have good contact for printing prints. They are actually a framer and printing house (winners of the national framing awards this year actually!)
To be honest I cant see how it would work unless the people that wanted to commission a print run all had a say in the final design.
I've actually got a small project on the horizon to create a limited number of prints using other peoples art. As a kind of promotional piece of work too. check it out at www.artists-united.com
Something could be done for sure!
Retro
why doesn't someone here commission an artist like they are on the ebay group? does anyone have the contacts and the willingness to do it. i think a small run of prints at say £50 would get people interested. If someone is willing to take on the organisation if it?! if this does happen then i bags print number 2 (pressumming the person organising it has no1)

Who's the Artist??, by RetroCanvas on Jun 3, 2007 17:05:04 GMT 1, Much of my work is commissioned, meaning that my customers are the artists in a way.
If it's your idea, the labour can be done by someone else.
We (retrocanvas) are usually given an idea from a customer, we then expand on it, change it, redesign it etc. So we'd then take over the label as artist/designer.
Hope that makes sense, I'd like to hear other views too.

..I know Damien Hirst has done plenty of work and lots by his own hand, but as i understand much of it these days is produced by his 'team' from his ideas, and this raises an interesting point.. so my question is....If i (or any of you lot for that matter) had an idea, or many and got them commissioned, who is the artist?? Do we need to have put in years of graft as an artist first, or is the art in the idea and not necessariy the execution..or is it both..? go forth and discuss

Treasure Hunts, by RetroCanvas on May 19, 2006 11:49:49 GMT 1, Did anyone on the forum actually win one of the treasure hunts?
If so, what was the prize for doing so.
Did the inflatable toilet that was let off at Glasto last year get found??
Might be worth adding a section about the treasure hunts on the site mods??

Banksy's in Heaven, by RetroCanvas on Jun 25, 2006 12:47:50 GMT 1, Don't know where i'm going with this thread, or what it's going to achieve but..
Is there anyone out there that knows of any prints that have died, i.e. been burnt to death, ripped to shreds, defaced etc etc. You may have had one yourself??
I recall a print on ebay ages ago, think it was a Turf War that had been taped to a wall and was creased. On its last legs basically.
Would be interesting to know if anyones knows of some that are diffinately not alive, making the limited editions even more limited.

Whats Banksy been up to then?, by RetroCanvas on Mar 7, 2007 23:46:33 GMT 1, This is a biggy I know but..
What do you think Banksy has been up to. Has he been on a holiday, or has his latest work been kept a secret. We haven't seen any major street work from him in a while, no stunts either.
All we've heard is that his work has reached big bucks at top auctions, there is likely to be some more prints from POW... um.. thats about it.. appart from the obviouse ebay rants we all know and love.
Maybe he's has gone on holiday as nothing at the moment suggests that he's busy with his art (nothing wrong with that).
Just interested in what people think he's been up to.
Anyone have any guesses? (let the flood of smart arse replies commence)

How was Banksy's year?, by RetroCanvas on Dec 21, 2006 20:21:47 GMT 1, I think that he should just do what the hell he likes. I'm pretty sure he will do that too.

A big year year for Banksy. LA, Sotheby's, web meltdowns, queues, ebay etc.. How do people here feel he has faired? How should he play it next year?

Flipping Question, by RetroCanvas on Jul 9, 2007 13:24:43 GMT 1, Makes perfect sense to me ,
I mainly paint commissions for people - there is a lot of satisfaction in producing something that originates from the person that will have to look at it for as long as they wish to keep it. Sure, I have my own ideas but producing art for people is a good feeling and promissing from the very start. I'd like to have kept some of the pieces i've done for people in the past then I'd probably have no room to hang them anyway :-)
retro
Cant eva imagine buying a piece of art and parting with it again till ive really lived with it for a long time and fallen outa love with it...buying art to me is very personal and call me a romantic but i still believe money has nothing to do with art...infact if i paint something really good nothing will get me to sell it untill i have enjoyed it...a good piece of art always grows with me and becomes an emotional part of me...........wot do u think of that you bunch of sterile people....lol....i know im a wannabe hippie

Artists to Watch, by RetroCanvas on Jun 2, 2007 20:27:04 GMT 1, Thats a very good shout Pez - Respect +1
I can remember my final show at Weston-Super-Mare Art College.
Although the art may not be up for sale, if you like something, make sure you track down the student. They'll more than happy to sell some bits.
It all boils back down to buying something you like. Yes we'd all like to buy a banksy because theres the added bonus of knowing it's worth a mint but there's nothing better than a great piece of oringinal art to look at because you love it.
Retro
Couple of non street art names to add to the mix - Peter Jones (finally getting the recognition he deserves for his scary monkeys) see www.fred-london.com and Adam Bridgland www.adambridgland.co.uk/And don't forget the Art School degree shows are coming up - a great place to buy original art.

Retro Couple of non street art names to add to the mix - Peter Jones (finally getting the recognition he deserves for his scary monkeys) see www.fred-london.com and Adam Bridgland www.adambridgland.co.uk/And don't forget the Art School degree shows are coming up - a great place to buy original art.

I'm interested in swaping..., by RetroCanvas on May 23, 2006 22:46:53 GMT 1, beejoir1: Yes, weston would be cool, or bomb middle england. Looking to swap both prints for one earlier one. Want to do it off ebay to get away from the high fees and I know I'll get a real one from someone off the forum.
dill: Soup can is not one of my fav's, sorry
numusic: if I have no joy with a swap, I'll hook up with you.
Thanks all,
offers still wanted
