Banksy - Show Me The Monet, by medichead on Oct 21, 2020 21:35:51 GMT 1, Monkey Parliament went for £10m but bear in mind what a whopping size of piece it is. Absolutely massive, practically the size of the side of a house. Considering its size, £7m is a stunning price for SMTM in my book. is a painting valued on the amount of oil it uses now? you best not visit the Louvre in that case
Paintings typically are valued based on their size, because to price them otherwise implies the gallery thinks some works are weaker than others. By pricing on size alone, the gallery isn’t commenting on the strength of a piece and therefore doesn’t make a buyer nervous.
Size is key.

Banksy - Show Me The Monet, by medichead on Oct 21, 2020 21:31:59 GMT 1, This was a predictable result for a piece that is good example of Banksy’s humour, but not as impressive in concept, scale, execution, or timelessness as Devolved Parliament.
Anyone who expected anything else is blindly, perhaps delusionally optimistic about the art market...
This is a very good result for the seller and team Banksy

Artorious007, by medichead on Oct 21, 2020 9:20:27 GMT 1, Very confused by this guy's ramblings. Talks a lot of supporting young artists for the love of the art, but also about how to invest well and make money long term. Hates money-makers but wants to make money. It all reeks of grumpy old man who thinks the young'uns are doing it wrong, not like in his day. This. He wants you to make money, but only if you're very rich (investing in blue-chip > $500k), and your taste is good (i.e., matches his).

He posted a story to a low-engagement change.org petition saying Banksy was antisemitic. His point was that this was a PR stunt by Banksy...

Sotheby's Art Auctions • NEW YORK 🇺🇲, by medichead on Oct 20, 2020 17:52:05 GMT 1, This is a fav of mine. He did another defaced Hirst at the same time that was good too. This should go for more than the Monet one. So much stronger. I just can't see that happening.
Conceptually I think it's good (I mean, just compare it to an elephant with a rocket on its back), but not as visually appealing as the Monet.

UK buyer looking for some Banksy bits.. , by medichead on Oct 19, 2020 15:08:04 GMT 1, Not to be overly pessimistic, but I would be wary of any advice that could guarantee an item bought for less than £1k holding its value in ten years time, let alone making any money. Your other option is to frame the posters you’ve bought to conservation standards so he can enjoy them for years to come. Definitely choose UV protective (99%), and if you’re feeling fancy can go for low reflective glass. MrFrameman would be a cost effective option for these. Can you advise rough framing costs please.... As your right. I didn't factor that in. Keeping things simple but protective, you would be looking approx £200 each. Just a ballpark figure, the palestine could end up a little less, the soup cans a little more etc.

UK buyer looking for some Banksy bits.. , by medichead on Oct 19, 2020 14:50:05 GMT 1, So... Only right to keep yous all updated since you have all been good enough to comment and give some great advice.. Even sending me some links of bits for sale... Its very much appreciated. I now have 2 posters, the Palestine one and the trespass poster.. I have a bit of my original budget left.. And while the hotel visit is definately a great shout, and one we could look at when if it opens again... I'm thinking another piece. But after being totally drawn into this website and seeing some of the great pieces, I'm tempted to throw in a wild card for him... And move away from Banksy,, this one can't be more than 1k very very max... And hopefully a bit of a speculative buy... (I've had a couple of dm's of people saying I'm buying at highs price wise for Banksy, but I don't mind because I know he'll really appreciate them) any ideas please.. Think along the lines of. If you had 1000 to spend on something to enjoy but then in 10 years you had to sell it... Where would your money be spent... Don't say stocks n shares or savings.

Heavy Weaponry @ Sotheby’s Day Auction , by medichead on Oct 19, 2020 13:23:22 GMT 1, I don’t know anything so don’t listen to me, but I have seen it... ...and I think it’s small, boring, unimpressive, unartistic, and the play on words only works on one level. If this was a Mrs Banksy original, I think we all know how it would be received. What you mean he (mrs Banksy) hasn't ripped this one off yet? Small, boring, unimpressive, unartistic and a play on a more successful artists work just about sums up mrs Banksy, et al. Thing is once an artist such as Banksy, with 25years worth of successful shows and projects behind them has a rare fully authenticated canvas available at a high end reputable auction house demand is high not because somebody particularly wants a painting of an elephant with a bomb attached but because they are buying into the artists ethos and by doing so they become a custodian of a little piece of art history. It's quite likely it will go into a vault and either be passed down through the buyers family or auctioned again at a later date to upgrade/reinvest in other works by the same artist. Sort of like what happens on here with Peckham Rock beermats only on a much larger scale. Completely agree - no arguments here.

Agreed.
But I’m sure you 100% understand the point I’m trying to make.
And I’m also fairly sure people agree with my original comment, as this work is utterly underwhelming in every sense a piece of art shouldn’t be.

Your latest Art Purchase?, by medichead on Oct 19, 2020 10:22:32 GMT 1, The helpful simplicity of your position is that your two cards were purportedly already authenticated by the Authentication Committee of the Estate of Jean-Michel Bas quiat. This is a great advantage, since both authentications can therefore be independently verified by the Estate itself — i.e. without you having to place any reliance on (or blind faith in) the assurances or paperwork offered by your seller. All the Estate should need from you is a copy of the signed and dated letter certificates previously issued by the Authentication Committee for the cards. Each of your certificates will have: (i) a transaction number; (ii) the details (title, date, medium, size) of the relevant card; (iii) an accompanying photograph; and (iv) a statement along the lines of, "This will certify that the Authentication Committee of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat has examined the work identified above, and is of the opinion that it is a genuine work by Jean-Michel Basquiat." The Estate can then just cross-reference the information against its own records. I hope the verification process regarding authenticity will be a smooth one for you.
Good on you met for taking the time to help with this. Even if jakecskis doesn’t follow up on this, I’m sure you will have given someone down the road a healthy dose of skepticism when being presented with a ‘too good to be true’ offer of a JMB postcard with CoA.

Who Are the Heavyweight Hype Art Advisors? , by medichead on Oct 18, 2020 8:12:54 GMT 1, Did you seek advice when buying these pieces? If so, my instinct would be to approach the initial advisor in question...
If bought from a gallery directly then you could offer the works back and see what price they could achieve, the gallery may be able to find a private buyer for you. You may even make money.
As above, it’s unusual for an art advisor doing their job correctly to place hype art in the collections of clients, so feels like somewhat of an oxymoron.
Fully support your strategy.

Ai Weiwei Bombs, by medichead on Oct 17, 2020 19:30:42 GMT 1, I emailed and they have said they have set aside an edition for me to ship to UK - great comms so far.
I might be biased but this seems like an absolute bargain.

New Banksy in Nottingham , by medichead on Oct 17, 2020 13:31:55 GMT 1, Here's the thing: the stencil he posted doesn't even match the image. It's a hasty attempt to retro cut a stencil to take credit. Clown. Anyone else seeing the facebook logo in the hair?
Bingo - great shout. 100% that is no accident. Agree with above comments - the pixelation is certainly intentional. Well done Banksy for creating an image that has a lot more to it than initially meets the eye.

What’s the best £1k can buy right now?, by medichead on Oct 17, 2020 2:34:55 GMT 1, In terms of ROI, probably 2 banksy welcome mats. But that’s a boring answer.
Go to a local art fair, when they’re back on

Banksy - Show Me The Monet, by medichead on Oct 16, 2020 17:39:33 GMT 1, That doesn’t fit in with when I saw it hanging in the Laz office. Strange.
Ah! Sounds like you have more info than me!
The suggestions of it being sent to Sotheby’s by Banksy via proxy are of course possible. That’s how I would do it, if I was making 7/8 figure artworks as an ‘anonymous’ street artist.

Banksy - Show Me The Monet, by medichead on Oct 16, 2020 16:53:18 GMT 1, So did Laz sell this to a client who are now selling it or is the current owner still Laz? Provenance, from Sotheby's:
Steve Lazarides, London (acquired directly from the artist) Acquired directly from the above by the present owner in 2005
So my guess is Laz sold in 2005, and showed it at the Banksy show in 2018 on loan.

David Shrigley New Edition Launching Thursday 15th October, by medichead on Oct 16, 2020 9:12:32 GMT 1, I don't like tiered pricing but I suspect galleries who do it think it taps into the relatively modern phenomenon of FOMO. They hype the print a week or so before with teases of the image and fans of the artist get excited and we all speculate about the print. Then it is released and goes on sale the same time we see the image for the first time and you have to make a snap judgement to buy or not. If you are undecided and the price starts to rise, some fans will then get caught up in the moment and perhaps buy it because has reaching a price point that still seems OK to justify the purchase. Finally the price rises further and in the case of yesterday CE even said at one point on instagram it was "almost sold out". This makes perhaps some art investors and some fans think it is now or never in terms of owning this print.....most people on her would disagree of course and buy on the secondary market for less, but not everyone is as obsessed as us. To some perhaps an extra £1-2000 is not a big deal either. The hype and the tiers worked brilliantly for CE yesterday and they sold out a print which I think is quite nice, but nowhere near Shrigely's best work, in a couple of hours. I don't like it but when the process works for them as well as yesterday things are unlikely to change. If they had sold this print at say £2500 flat for 125 copies would it have sold out yesterday?
100% 👆🏻
What does that say about an image that they can’t prerelease any photos of it in case people talk themselves out of it?

David Shrigley New Edition Launching Thursday 15th October, by medichead on Oct 16, 2020 8:36:17 GMT 1, What kind of moron would buy these prints when they can buy a shrigley original for less? Probably people who like the image and don’t just buy for an artists name.
Certainly possible, and if it was a strong image I would be inclined to agree.

Mauro Martinez Sensitive Content No 22 Oct 15th 6 pm BST, by medichead on Oct 15, 2020 22:18:45 GMT 1, I love Mauro, but I don't want to see Trump's face when I walk around my house.
What's the edition number? Or is it time-limited, open edition for 24h?

Lyn Art Banksy LE Prints, by medichead on Oct 15, 2020 22:01:33 GMT 1, What exactly is there to discuss? The banksy prints they have put up this afternoon alongside other seemingly legit works from other established artists? I'm not going to spend too long digging around, but this site just looks like it's selling some dude's random urban art collection, plus these fake banksy/after banksy prints.
