Retna "Say My Name, So You Can See Me" Diptych, by daveart on Dec 25, 2017 4:53:04 GMT 1, saw a few sets of these available at art basel miami fairs .. nicely framed they look amazing .. for sale at 18.5K and marked sold. i think ebay and such may not be the best spot for some pieces like these. in person and gallery they apparently sell for much higher than prices discussed above.

Artcurial Art Auctions , by daveart on Dec 15, 2017 15:14:40 GMT 1, Interesting to see KAWS Blame Game go unsold. minimum bid would have valued it in the 48K usd range.. maybe the hype of the new release stole all the willing buyers.

Banksy โข Box Set, Walled Off Hotel, by daveart on Dec 13, 2017 3:48:40 GMT 1, I dont have a horse in this race .. but I will say that i just returned from Art Basel Miami - at least two galleries were selling these labeled as "Banksy HPM'" - $3000 USD. And from what i was told they had sold at least six at that price. Also, sold at at forum auction i believe in the same price range.
Makes no sense to me but there you go... carry on.

Banksy Bomb Hugger Print, by daveart on Dec 11, 2017 23:24:08 GMT 1, Sorry, my point was more that if you want it, the seller wont need to sell at 'what it's worth' which is a price I believe no one can say (sellers price high, buyers dream low) not wishing to derail further this post, but I meant, if you love the print, have themoney...pay it, own it, hang it... you get that print now or in 6 months you will be saying 'I wish I bought that then'. For clarity i do not own one, want one (well I would love one but cant afford), i don't know the OP or any others related to this post so have no vested interest in the price... I agree. And in way of an example of how people like to dictate the worth of a print, I'll share my experience of selling my signed ยฃ100 sheet of Di-faced tenners on eBay in late 2006 or possibly early 2007. The print cost me ยฃ95 from POW. I think it was numbered 13/50, the edition was certainly 50. First a caveat on figures and dates (I know how people on this forum like to tear others apart), it was over 10 years ago, a lot of rapids have passed under a very weak and rickety bridge since then, and at the time I wasn't compelled to write down or remember the detail, I just moved on with my life (he says haha). The print did 'quite' well and eventually sold for around ยฃ4,500 (give or take). However, during the listing and even afterwards, I received quite a few, very angry rants about how I had shilled it, which I had not, and that it wasn't worth it and that there was one for sale in this gallery and that gallery for less, on and on it went. You get the picture. I met the buyer in the old HSBC, may have been Natwest, at Victoria Station. He checked over the print, as best he could, as we sat in little chairs in the middle of a tiny little branch, handed over the money, which we both agreed was a lot for such a little piece of paper, but he himself said it will look cheap very soon. He was right, 6/9 months later one sold in a London auction house for, I believe, around ยฃ63,000. Works would never increase in value if no one was ever prepared to pay more than the perceived 'market value'. If I ever have the money, I would happily sit in an auction room and pay what ever I had to to put my Banksy collection back together, regardless of what the zeitgeist of the day was telling me the pieces were worth. And there's the rub, there are people out there that would buy these prints in a heartbeat, if they had the money, just for the pleasure of owning one. In my humble opinion, people are confusing passion with investment far too much, and while they can mix to a certain degree they don't always go hand in hand. Anyway, I hope some people find my little experience interesting. At the end of the day we are all just custodians of these artworks, as they pass through our hands (every collector should own at least one piece of Vanitas). For me the narrative is, and will always remain, the important factor. I feel privileged to have owned a large Banksy collection, and have the inevitable stories that go with that; and to have lived through a defining moment of Art History. If you have any thoughts feel free to comment, but please try to behave like an adult and not a child in a playground. one of the standout posts of the year on this forum.. should be required reading before accounts are registered in the future.
I have never sold anything that i could have bought back a year later at less money. The long 10 plus year increase in value may stagnate in the future now that values are so high. But that is investing talk.. what makes you happy.. what makes you interested in the art.. what makes you want to talk to people and enjoy the experience. Once you find that then it doesn't matter if you pay 4 or 6 .. you get in the game ..and that is what makes you happy. I doubt for any of us our dying breath will be used to say .. "damn.. i over paid for that Banksy 20 years ago..."

KAWS Art Basel, by daveart on Dec 5, 2017 15:34:53 GMT 1, not sure why, but i never like circles. seems a hassle to frame and hang and the circle isn't important to the work specifically is it ? any reason why these are Tondo that i am not aware of ? anyone else dislike circles ? i guess that said.. id buy it if it landed in my lap ..because they are cool.. but they would be better IMHO as rectangles. I like circles, its those f*cking triangles that get me fired up. Coming over here, taking our jobs. I know I took a risk here on the forum coming out as Anti Circle. I'm trusting you guys .. help me .. show me a better way to look at it. but while i am being narrow minded.. i agree with you Saint.. Triangles piss me off too.

New KAWS print from Pace, by daveart on Dec 5, 2017 15:16:57 GMT 1, so, on the framing - would it be totally stupid to put a circle inside of a square frame ? 9 circular frames sounds like a really big bill at the framers - if they even wanted to take it on.

Ernest Zacharevic ๐ฑ๐น Penang, Malaysia Street Art , by daveart on Dec 2, 2017 22:40:56 GMT 1, if mediocre and pathetic get you sold out editions and world wide placement on walls.. i guess that's good enough for some people..
PB just for conversation i'd be curious to know your list of better 'painters' in the current scene.
As a painter he's mediocre at best. As a graffiti artist he's pathetic. As some BS artist on a minor forum he's "huge in Asia." โToo much like his othersโ could apply to most artists really. Certainly any with an established style. I guess it just depends if you like that particular style / artist. I think the contrast between the very precise, deliberate brush gestures, and the more fluid flow of the bold spray paint is what I love about his work. Itโs like fine art meets tagging. And there is no doubting his talents as a painter. Incredible! Not to mention versatility; small, big, canvas, wood, walls, reclaimed objects...

Ernest Zacharevic ๐ฑ๐น Penang, Malaysia Street Art , by daveart on Dec 2, 2017 16:36:54 GMT 1, Not for me either. Just a bit bland. Too much like his others a bit of spray, drips and then a bit of print. Just find the image lacking and not at all interesting to look at. I could probably pass by one of these without a second glance. As equally uninspiring as the guy who splashes a bit of paint across a pretty ladies eyes on every print except Zach does it with the body instead. The only counter to this I would add would be that EZ is a painter - he actually paints with brush and oils and is extremely good at it. some artists frequently discussed here are (heck lets pick on brainwash or maybe even FAILE who I love ) taking computer images and minipulating them for output and then maybe coloring in the lines. so while the 'hand finishing' could be critized as being a bit uninspiring the core image by EZ is very very good and he is very talented. Not that computer file manipulation isnt a talent..but..

Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by daveart on Dec 1, 2017 19:41:04 GMT 1, shortened this up.. I think you are absolutely correct on the true artistic value. i have no idea why the first editions zoomed from a few thousands of dollers to 40-50K usd.. makes no sense to me and had i though/knew it would happened i obviously wouldnt have sold mine!
on these prints -- i assume they are open edition. and .. wait for it .. they aren't signed on the back by the father of the artist. :/

Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by daveart on Dec 1, 2017 15:33:43 GMT 1, as always - comes down to personal taste. at the buy in price i had on the cabeza 10 years ago i would buy that again all day long over these pieces. I suppose it is a bit like people not buying the warhol shoes and other illustrations in favor of the more colorful more 'warhol' pieces in the style that made him famous.
i guess what i was really trying to illustrate was that when the first estate prints came out galleries and experts in the know shunned them at far lower prices. now - at far higher prices - galleries are pumping them and lining up to buy new ones.

Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by daveart on Nov 30, 2017 17:30:30 GMT 1, I bought one of the original estate prints many years ago - Cabeza - its one of my more painful art experiences . i bought it because it was bad ass basquiat. it was huge - it forced you to look at it. My gallery friend in NYC told me not to buy it because it was just ' a fancy poster' and they wouldnt even carry something like that in their gallery.. i think i paid 7K for it with framing or something like that. i sold it on a few years later - my wife didnt love it - and the comments from galleries about it being 'just a fancy poster' really stung a bit - i listened to other people and that eroded my enjoyment of something that i really did like for what it was.. a Basquiat - in my house and still, i sold it. Now, 10 years later - the gallery that soured me on it pumps these things like no tomorrow at 45k , 50K, 60K an impression.. The art world is a tough thing. i am just rambling at this point but i guess the point is - if you like it - its as close as you are going to get to a basquiat in your house so go for it and enjoy it. with the trend i think we have to assume the estate will milk this cow every few years until they run out of steam.. and a whole generation of art collectors will never know that these werent always in the market and they wont much care.. doesnt make it right. just is what it is..

Banksy โข Box Set, Walled Off Hotel, by daveart on Nov 30, 2017 0:17:22 GMT 1, ah reseller come to our place to make money off our hard works. No thank you. Art is about love not money.
i kind of also thought art was about the artists, their families, their employees, and their distribution channels putting food on the table as well. truly i hope everyone loves their job but at the end of the day if it doesnt pay the bills......

Banksy โข Box Set, Walled Off Hotel, by daveart on Nov 29, 2017 17:52:17 GMT 1, Its a bit of a mystery as to how many of these were made - but they are NOT 'unlimited' or 'open' - prices will fluctuate to whatever level but i think if you have one of these with some paperwork it will be something to hang onto as it is a great piece of street art history. Whether someone pays 600 or 1200 it wont matter much in 10 years if you like it and enjoy it. and in ten years its got a solid chance of being worth 200 or 2000 who knows. look at the current price of the Banksy CD covers. its all crazy money now.
<note i changed this after thinking about it more .. these really are actually 'limited' .. and its not 'open' since it will end at some point from the official source - many thousands will be made for sure but that is still a small number compared to the world wide Banksy market.>

Instant contemporary art collection for sale ends, by daveart on Nov 21, 2017 22:06:22 GMT 1, great stuff there for trade .. but i am curious .. why not just bid on the sale ends that is already out. Is there a perceived value difference between the old and new sale ends ?

KAWS - Where to start.., by daveart on Nov 14, 2017 21:52:05 GMT 1, great information.. one problem i have is some of the series all start to look the same. i need to study them to tell them apart. is there some theme i am missing ? or just various levels of distortion and color.
black and white snoopy set is pretty interesting.- Mans Best Friend - anyone seen those in person. I like that they are not quite so over the top colorful and that they bleed to the edge as opposed to an image floating in a white space.

KAWS - Where to start.., by daveart on Nov 14, 2017 15:48:32 GMT 1, Definitely not looking for the cheapest.. Not sure there is a right answer here .. really like the information from CREAM - just looking to hear information on the sets and if there is any pecking order in terms of progression of his work..
ten years later will we be saying " should have bought sponge bob instead of snoopy .. and if so .. why " any recurring themes - anything that is more 'classic KAWS'
Whats the Girl with Balloon image for KAWS ? or maybe there isnt one..

KAWS - Where to start.., by daveart on Nov 14, 2017 15:01:00 GMT 1, have been collecting for a long while - keep coming back to KAWS prints but I cant figure out where to start and pricing is high so its not like you can just pick three or four you like and go for it. (ie. brainwash, whatson, fairey, faile, etc with all sub thousand dollar entry points)
Avoiding all the figures and other collectables - what are the starting points for KAWS?
Spongebob multiple editions snoopy multiple editions dolphin baby's with over coloring other ads with over coloring etc ..
Dont just say buy what you like.. i get that .. what i am trying to figure out is how his progression fits together.
Any thoughts? this has to be as interesting as 200 pages of POW closing down.. talk to me about KAWS

Pen Collecting Anyone?, by daveart on Nov 8, 2017 15:53:10 GMT 1, Wow! You could get a Warhol print for that. That was my first thought... why buy a pen when you could just buy a very nice Warhol print. The answer probably is that anyone buying an $85,000 pen probably has a half dozen Warhol's on the wall already..and a ferrari, and a plane.. and... f'ers.

Pen Collecting Anyone?, by daveart on Nov 8, 2017 15:36:24 GMT 1, Sorry to take focus ever so briefly off the POW Closing thread getting to 500 pages..
ahem..
I happened across this Pen and thought it was a person just being crazy. Then i googled around a bit and found that apparently you can spend more on a current edition Montblanc pen than you can on a signed Banksy.. So, I thought you all should know in case you were looking to shift your collection around.
Ebay search : MONTBLANC WARHOL PEN
Set search to put highest value at the top. Currently Warhol versions available.. at $85,000 and $62,000 ..
Plenty of others to choose from. I didn't realize the pen collecting world was so .um.. crazy ?
how to upload pictures to the internet

Banksy Print, Canvas, WANTED, by daveart on Nov 8, 2017 15:00:41 GMT 1, I actually own a 2006 unsigned Sale Ends... and I am not really very happy about the re issue. Sorry to hijack the thread but does the new issue hurt or help the original version ? its pretty confusing to see the same piece of artwork released 11 years later in a high edition. Would maybe be different if some 1 off variants were made but to re release an already high edition print would definitely be frowned upon if it were any other artist. Hey if you are so unhappy- I'm sure you will be able to find someone willing to take your crappy unsigned original off your hands. Maybe me- this was the first and probably the only chance I will ever get at owning a Real Banksy- and I missed out- but I am grateful I had the opportunity and excitement that went along with it. You had the same chance as anyone else- this time around, and you were lucky enough to get an 06, can't you just be happy with that? Hey there Mercboy - your 119th post here seems to miss the mark. I didnt say anything about not liking what i have. What I attempted to do is point out that if this were any other artist it would be largely frowned upon to re release the same artwork 10 years later. But since it is happening, why not have a conversation about the impact in general on the piece and what this means for the image of both years going forward. Other people seemed to grasp the conversation line.. sorry if it was not clear enough.
I am also curious if anyone knows if this was actually printed in 2017 - or if these were printed in 2006 and stashed away in favor of the image they released. A worthy topics of conversation in my opinion but then according to my wife and kids i am frequently wrong.
enjoy.
