New Banksy in Hull, by twist65 on Feb 4, 2018 1:49:46 GMT 1, and your point about the Brexit vote being relative to decent and clever is what??? Just gave a data point. You can update your beliefs as you see fit. Another (sharper) datapoint: Brexit voters (on average obviously, not all) like to shot themselves in the foot - not an opinion, just a fact: www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/00343404.2017.1287350Just like painting over a Banksy touristic attraction Again, update your beliefs as you see fit after looking at the data. Other interesting data points out there if you want to do further updating: correlations of brexit vote with education (negative) and with local immigration share (negative - they dislike what they know little about). Again, draw your own conclusion. Some more data for you -
London as a whole voted firmly in favour of remain - 28 London Boroughs to 5 against, with 2.2 million remain votes. City of London voted 76.69% in favour of remain. By your logic an overwhelming majority of clever and decent peopleโฆ
โฆthe Barbican Basquiat tribute pieces were first seen Sep 17, so they went up early that morning or the night before. The same day people were seen pressing sheets of paper against the Ferris Wheel piece that used oil sticks - to create crude transfer prints of part of the image to sell on eBay, damaging the original in the process. And at the same time, again less than 24 hours after the piece had gone up, the larger piece had been โvandalisedโ with a red dot on one of the characterโs foreheads, and another artist had added a piece to the side of the Banksy. It was clear that left unattended or unprotected neither piece would last the night, so very shortly after these initial interventions a City of London security guard was in place to prevent the pieces being tagged over or destroyed completely before plexi could be installed.
Rewind to Better Out Than In, Banksyโs New York Street residency in 2013 (how time flies). The first piece went up on October 1st. It took approx 12 hours to be located, or at least the location confirmed on social media. Within a few hours of this, the sign element of the piece had been stolen (a side point but this was likely an anticipated enevitibality and not discouraged from Banksyโs perspective), and within 24 hours the remaining stencil piece had been tagged on and then completely buffed. The piece was intact a matter of mere hours. Thus commenced a month-long daily chain of events, starting with Banksy posting a new piece on social media, then a race for NY Banksy fans and media to discover the location, get to the piece and take pics etc before it was either tagged or buffed to death, stolen, covered up or enterprising gangs of local โsecurityโ adopting a pay-per-view system for tourists. Even the theatrical daily cat-and-mouse of BOTI 5 years ago was not a new thing for Banksy street pieces. Buffing/tagging/dogging/removing the entire piece has been an inevitable by-product of a new Banksy for years. Itโs not a 2018 phenomenon, nor is it a UK one, or a northern England one - or one that can in any way align to any analysis of local residentsโ intellect or moral fibre.
In fact, the Hull piece was left untouched and enjoyed by the public for a remarkably long period of time before it was inevitably hit. It appeared on 26th Jan. Banksy confirmed it was his the evening of the 26th. It was buffed the evening of the 28th. So it was up and untouched for more than 2 days, with no plexi covering or โsecurity.โ
Add to this that Banksyโs stencil was placed partially on top of a traditional graffiti-writers piece. This has not gone down well with writers on more than one occasion in the past, with well publicised swift ripostes.
This data suggests to me that the buffing of the Hull piece was nothing at all to do with Brexit, or the people and politics of Hull. Your statistical analysis seems to say a lot more about you than anything else. Feel free to update your beliefs as you see fit.

Retna โข Braddock Tiles, by twist65 on Feb 2, 2018 13:20:51 GMT 1, The term has been reappropriated as a fancy sounding term to up-sell digital inkjet prints but originally the word applied to the varnish, not the print. I remember when it first came on the market. You ran out an inkjet print, and applied giclรฉe varnish. Hey presto your digital inkjet print was now a giclรฉe print. Since digital printing technology has improved, the original benefits of giclรฉe varnish are reduced, but people still use the term giclรฉe as it sounds more expensive/appealing to the art market than 'digital print' or 'inkjet print.'

Retna โข Braddock Tiles, by twist65 on Feb 2, 2018 11:52:20 GMT 1, Sigh... "Giclรฉe printing" refers to the varnish applied to the prints NOT the printing method itself. However the Braddock Tiles prints are not giclรฉes they are digitally printed, which normally means a professional grade of inkjet-type technology, but can mean other print methods too.
And did anyone read the OPs post before slamming Retna? The Braddock Tiles prints was a fundraising project by curated by Swoon, for a community project. Retna was one of the artists who stepped up. The reason why all of the prints in this series aren't 57 colour screenprints or woodcuts on deckled 900gsm stock is to keep production costs at a minimum, so that the project had the lowest possible overheads and more money could be raised to a very worth cause.
So a thread about this particular Retna print is probably the least relevant to try and assassinate his character on.

Mark E Smith RIP, by twist65 on Jan 24, 2018 23:36:19 GMT 1, Very sad news. I was obsessed with The Fall for a large part of my late teens. What a back catalogue. Grotesque after the Gramme and Infotainment Scan my 2 personal faves, along with an unforgettably uncomfortable gig in Manchester where Mark E Smith had his back to the audience the whole way through. RIP.

THE MET LOTTERY, by twist65 on Jan 18, 2018 2:36:03 GMT 1, I am posting to extend an extremely belated yet sincere thanks to Met for putting this thread together. I fell out of the competition mid way through March - despite enjoying it immensely, work commitments and a milestone birthday got the better of me. Well done to Ed and Doyle for sparring 'til the end.
Rather than give up completely I've been dipping into all the videos in chronological order at a leisurely pace (I've literally just finished the music video questions, which I thought I would have done much better at...). I don't think there's been one question or subject that I haven't found interesting or thought-provoking in some way, but I particularly enjoyed the videos on cognitive biases. A subject I had no academic knowledge of prior to this thread but have found myself referencing incessantly since.. So I plan on revisiting that section and the authors of the videos you posted in more detail now that I've finally caught up!
Thanks again Met. A thoroughly impressive effort on your part.

THE MET LOTTERY, by twist65 on Mar 10, 2017 16:40:28 GMT 1, thanks Met and unlucky fellow participants! I hadn't seen Food Inc. but having grown up next door to a pig farm in rural England its a subject I have a little knowledge of, although still an eyeopening documentary. I normally spend the evenings working, or filling my head with nonsense, so am enjoying this 'night school' as a departure from the norm.. Next vid looks a goodun too.. I grew up on a farm, my parents still own it and in my dad's lifetime he's gone from taking produce a few miles down the road to competing in an international market. The thing that surprises me is the amount of fertiliser/pesticides we're allowed to spread. We have never got close to using as much as we could but other farms just use everything they can. On a side note, we had one pig that used to get taken on walks down the lane and had a fairly chill life, but that was more to keep my grandad away from the rest of the farm! Very friendly creatures pigs, a good choice of sidekick for your grandad!
I can relate to that re fertilisers etc, I used to muck out the pigs with my neighbour on a weekend, and he used to spend the whole time moaning about what other farms did, animal feeds, how their fertilisers affected his land etc (I don't think he had many people to talk to!). When the mad cow disease thing happened he had plenty of eye-opening stories for me.. Things were tough then, must be a nightmare being a farmer these days..

THE MET LOTTERY, by twist65 on Mar 9, 2017 22:28:43 GMT 1, 1. The two sides are 1) you lose if you buy cheap junk food because of the negative health aspects to you and your family. 2) you lose if you buy fresh/healthy produce as its too expensive for you to afford on your budget. So you are effectively priced out of having a healthy diet.
2. the environmental impact - tonnes of pesticides etc are not used because environmentally sound products are given shelf space instead of harmful ones, so a purchase order from Walmart helps save the world...
3 the veggie libel laws

THE MET LOTTERY, by twist65 on Mar 6, 2017 22:10:20 GMT 1, 1 - The new Martin Watson print comes out. Someone likes it and posts quite encouragingly about it, but isn't sure if they will snag one so post cautiously positive. They get one and all of a sudden its the best print ever, when it lands the quality is amazing, continuous good posts about the print and the artist in general so as to keep his stock high... etc... 2 - Guilt by association - where you align someones argument with someone or something bad/untrustworthy/negative etc -so therefore the argument must be false because so-and-so thinks so,, 3i) - Straw man occurs when someone misrepresents someones position to make it easier to critique ii) The illusion is that the position seems to have been critiqued due to a false portrayal of the original claim

Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel โ
โ
โ
, by twist65 on Mar 3, 2017 19:35:50 GMT 1, the art looks fantastic, some of the pieces just wow. I do kind of think that this is his weakest overall concept yet though, at least for a show or event. For the most part I imagine the hotel will be a bubble, he might as well have done it anywhere as to how much notice of the surroundings outside the hotel walls a lot of the guests will take, except to take the occasional cringy poverty tourism instagram selfie in between trying to pinch napkins and branded match boxes. Hope to be proved wrong though.

THE MET LOTTERY, by twist65 on Mar 2, 2017 18:48:16 GMT 1, Monty could be attending the party while being in Beijing, if the party is held in Beijing. It's not clear where the party is...... So it is still aplitative... amplayatative..... amplifiative..... not a deductive argument (yet). But what was the question ? Did I win something? I had to watch again to check, but it does say that its impossible for Monty to get 'here' from Beijing in an afternoon, so we don't know the location of the party but know that its not in Beijing as Beijing is too far away to make travelling to the party an option.

Pejac show London "Law of the Weakest" 22-31 July, by twist65 on Jul 21, 2016 16:50:08 GMT 1, I must be missing something. Some of his murals look great but really don't see why people are getting their knickers in a twist over a dull picture of trees that looks more like something you'd get in Paperchase than something at the cutting edge of contemporary street art. Each to their own but this will be a flippers hump-and-dump like Borondo, who actually had a rather interesting show but no-one cares less about him 12 months down the line either.
I must be missing something.

Dolk Rip On / Rip Off May 24th , by twist65 on May 13, 2016 14:23:22 GMT 1, Just because something has a concept behind it, it doesn't make it good by default. I thought the buff pieces and drippy dead stencil canvases posted recently were weak. If they were part of a cathartic process for the artist then good for him. Maybe he reached his own personal limits of what he could express through stencils, I don't think you can blame the medium itself for that, but am looking forward to seeing Dolks new direction nonetheless, always good to see an artists taking risks. If it doesn't work out he can always do an Eelus and go back to the crowd-pleasers.

**Warning** Possible Banksy scam, by twist65 on May 10, 2016 13:30:19 GMT 1, And don't forget that comments don't show on a mobile so mobile users would be oblivious to anyone raising concerns about a potentially fraudulent sales listing. Sales threads were clearly better for everyone how they were, there only seems to be one person who doesn't agree with that fact...
