What's the dumbest thing you've ever done to a print?, by nosignofland on Jan 22, 2014 3:10:38 GMT 1, Hi all! Longtime lurker; first-time poster. So I thought I'd start off with a bang by impressing upon you my idiocy and hoping some of you might make me feel better by sharing your stories.
I purchased Gaia's Carrier Pigeon last month and stored in its tube before I was certain I'd be able to afford a nice frame. Not ideal, I know. But I'm quite clumsy and didn't want to damage the print before taking it to the framer's. ... Well, it turns out I basically had the right idea.
So, after deciding today was the day I'd take the print to the shop, I finally decided to unravel the print. It was quite tightly packed, and it was difficult to remove the black sticker from the brown-paper wrapping. Probably not the best exercise to attempt as soon as one awakes -- but this was kind of like unwrapping a present under your tree after a full month!
So I tried to slide a finger around the corner of the sticker. No luck. After some frustration and a lot of impatience, I attempted to delicately tear around it. Eventually, out came the print -- and it looked incredible! I had already picked out a spot on the wall and spent a moment admiring just how great it looked and thinking that I might have to purchase some more Gaia works. But then I noticed it -- a four-inch tear right where I tore around that sticker.
It's been about two hours, and I still have a pit in my stomach. I suppose I'll purchase another Carrier Pigeon and wait a little while to frame it ... although, this time, I might try to sway the framer to unravel it. I feel quite stupid and even more remorseful. I still can't believe I did that. Ugh.
So, make me feel a little better here, forum. Miserly loves company, after all. So let me ask you all, what's the dumbest mistake you've made with a print? Dropped it right after getting it framed? Ripping it? Drymounting? I really do want to know ...
Tl;dr -- I'm the first-time poster who just clumsily tore a Gaia print. What similar accidents have you had?

What's the dumbest thing you've ever done to a print?, by Deleted on Jan 22, 2014 6:56:31 GMT 1, Dumbest thing I ever done is to bring my print to a dishonest framer who tore my JR eyes at the signature - still painful when I watch it from a close view point but at the end it is just a piece of paper with a great image... and it looks great on the wall.
I bought a double sided Superman poster (official 30th anniversary poster) for my kid, I wanted to show it to him so I removed the poster from tube... My kid was so excited to see Superman that he kept jumping... until he felt on the poster (still rolled)... So Superman has a big crack in the middle... told the story here and reply I got was "at least your kid managed to crush Superman in less than a second"
Many other similar stories here in the past. As long as the print is not fully spoiled (fire, water damage), it is fine At the end; you bought the print to be framed and thus not to stay in a "pristine" condition

Just goes to show you cant believe the titles.

What's the dumbest thing you've ever done to a print?, by tartarus on Jan 22, 2014 10:59:23 GMT 1, I managed to put a tube on top of a bigger tube, the dam cap of the bigger one collapsed and stuck a dink in the print inside. Not to bad and framed up fine, but it did not feel good!!!
Once saw someone pick up a minty fresh Peter blake print and drop it to floor on the corner!! But we won't say too much about that one!!

What's the dumbest thing you've ever done to a print?, by maxf on Jan 22, 2014 11:03:24 GMT 1, Unrolled a Charming Baker AP to have a look and stupidly decided to roll it back up rather than store it flat. Managed to put a decent crease in the middle of it as it was thick paper and completely varnished.
It probably shouldn't have come tubed in the first place, but I definitely shouldn't have re-rolled it!

What's the dumbest thing you've ever done to a print?, by atomone on Jan 22, 2014 12:22:54 GMT 1, DFace 'What Wars Are For' print stored in a tube ready for the framers next day (shuuda been safe as houses right) but got to framers and the mirrorboard was was completely crimped all the way up to within 5mm of where the image started?...got home and noticed my radiator had leaked overnight and so it had tricked onto the floor and found its way to the tube thus soaking it up into the print...only option was to window mount it within 5mm of the image and is still on my wall to this day and you'd never know...
Other D*Face print story was when he had his final show at Stolenspace I had the 2 prints that were given out, put them in a bag and as I was supping Red Stripe outside a pigeon shit from above and it sandwiched between the 2 prints...and they say that's good luck!!!
Last story...Was given a 30ft canvas by Goldie in the 80's, I kept it in my dads shed and it went moldy and he binned it in a skip when I was at uni to make space! Gutted as it was original olde-skool Goldie from when he filmed 'Bombin'...

What's the dumbest thing you've ever done to a print?, by AoT Framing on Jan 22, 2014 13:28:57 GMT 1, Bought a cheap frame from ikea, got home realised it wasn't glass, didn't like it so decided to store it under the bed. Forgot I'd stored a Peter Blake print in a portfolio there too. Corner of the cheap ikea frame put a half inch scratch across the Print. Couldn't restore it, sold it for less than half of its value. What's the dumbest thing you've ever done to a print?, by kaboom on Jan 22, 2014 15:33:25 GMT 1, Welcome nosignofland, and great post to start with!
I also did a really stupid thing, but I don't want to talk about it anymore. In Holland we say: "In retrospect, you look a cow in the ass". Don't know if that makes any sense in English?
But still hurts after 3 years

What's the dumbest thing you've ever done to a print?, by Deleted on Jan 22, 2014 15:54:47 GMT 1, Great thread, but I see some mishandling and mistakes. I, on the other hand, did what most would see as monumentally stupid, while I thought it was pretty funny.
I bought a gala benefit print that Robert Rauschenberg did for some society in Beverly Hills. I bought Warren Beaty's print from the organizer who sold off the prints of people who couldn't be bothered to show up at the event. Well after a great meal and a couple of bottles of wine. I thought: Fuck Warren Beaty! I ran downstairs retrieved the print, picked up a sharpie and dutifully X'd his name out and wrote in Rob & Susan
Good idea? Probably not, but it was fun at the time.

What's the dumbest thing you've ever done to a print?, by Neate Michael on Jan 22, 2014 16:12:19 GMT 1, I have a couple of cheap prints (under £65) that did not fit into standard size frames, so I trimmed them.
At the end of the day, they are now on the walls of my apartment, whereas a custom sized frame was gonna cost double the cost of the print. Regrets? None at all, unless Mau Mau and Bon become the new Banksy (or Dolk, or whoever).

What's the dumbest thing you've ever done to a print?, by jonti on Jan 22, 2014 16:17:36 GMT 1, It wasn't actually me who did this but, I took my Pulp Fiction to the framers, and it returned framed 2 weeks later, looked nice and all was well.
Couple of years later, I was doing house insurance stuff so decided to get COA and my name on the record at PC, went through the system took photos etc while still in the frame Got an email back from PC stating that the photos/numbering doesn't match their records Cue slight panic Had to send the print to POW for checking so took it back to the framers to have it removed. And a couple of days later got a call from the framers to "can you just come down and have a look at this please" Cue slightly more panic Got to the framers to see the print had been stuck down to the mount using plenty of parcel tape! And then, upon closer inspection found the original numbering faintly visible at the base of the print. It had been rubbed out and renumbered by the framer so you could see it above the mount! Turns out they had a new start in that week and they had framed it.

What's the dumbest thing you've ever done to a print?, by nosignofland on Jan 22, 2014 18:42:40 GMT 1, Some of these stories made me smile as much as I cringed! I don't know what I'd do if I did something similar to a Bansky or a DFace ...
Anyway, just wanted to thank you guys for sharing because, if anything, I kind of feel fortunate now. The print I tore is very much replaceable, and I plan on ordering a new one later today. I hope none of us have any new stories like these to share in the future ... but I'm definitely enjoying reading these. Thanks, guys!

What's the dumbest thing you've ever done to a print?, by FЯ on Jan 22, 2014 21:51:53 GMT 1, Rubbed a black patch of my Happy Choppers with a tissue because there was a small mark... now a big mark! (anyone had something like that repaired?) Took home a Coop print from a gallery with no tube and dropped it in a puddle Done exactly the same to one of my dolks, got a finger print mark on a black bit then tried to rub it with some loo roll worst thing I could of done! Buy an artists putty rubber from an art shop. It will remove it like magic, just dont press too hard.

What's the dumbest thing you've ever done to a print?, by doyle on Jan 22, 2014 23:28:47 GMT 1, fed up with people touching and brushing past my oil canvas painting, done by an old friend of mine, i decided to think about getting it put in a plexi-style box frame when i was next due to move.
As the day of the move approached, the canvas went off to the framers. Because it was a large canvas, 3mx2m roughly, i made sure i measured the front door of the new shared house and the door of the room it was going into and where it would sit in the room.
A few weeks later it arrived, and the framer asked where it was going. I said it was to go upstairs in my room on the 1st floor. "there is no way in hell it's getting up there" he said.
i had measured all the door frames and not the staircase and the ceiling and had to be sent back till i found somewhere to store it. what a nob!
