Whatson, by Deleted on Oct 17, 2014 1:20:26 GMT 1, You are correct it may not be the goal all the time of street art and there definitely is no right or wrong way to do things, yet you have to think about context. You mention Banksy and driving past something quickly and appreciating it. I love street pieces from Banksy but what Whatson has done in the piece you mentioned isnt even on the same breadth as a 15 min stencil in the street by Banksy or any other street artist. This new festival Mural is not regular street art and should be looked at differently. Regular street art you drive by isn't monumental is size and take days to produce. Maybe they are related but they are definitely different animals. Agreed, the oversized stencil is a relatively new beast and is moving into mural territory. I guess Dolk and Pรธbels initial work under the Ghetto Spedalsk project here in Norway set a precedent that's been followed by their contemporaries. M City. (Poland) made some huge stencils and there are big stencils in L A too.

Whatson, by Deleted on Oct 17, 2014 1:31:59 GMT 1, Interesting, cheers. Agree that both the Icy and Sot and Tilt works were quite phenomenal and can without a doubt stand up to serious academic critique. But.... that's not usually the goal of "street art" per se. There is a tradition within stencil art, and a very important precedent set by the likes of Banksy, that the work must be able to be seen, understood and consumed in the time it takes you to drive past. Stencil, Girl, pulling down concrete, graffiti released.. got it, smile, green light, go. There's a reason these pieces become public favourites. That may be the tradition of street art but is it of murals? Also don't get so hung up on academic critique there's a bit more to writing a paper than simply the critique of a singular image unless that's the goal of a specific paper. Having worked in the field it's a lot more fascinating than that.
The way this organised street art is going is that it will go full circle and be eaxctly the same as just murals on walls which are being done worldwide and for many years.
The way I see it is the decline of theatre and theatre houses and other buildings where some would have murals on inside walls which and thรฉรขtres used the talents of the artists of the day to create and paint the scenery and backdrops and in many cases costume etc.
Theatre is dead or dying as far as the masses are concerned so now artists turn to painting on outside walls.
While other artists that would have painted and created scenery and props for Hollyweird and the film industry are redundant because of cgi and special effects.

I work in theatre houses and I assure you theatre has not declined in any way. Infact the money the west end theatres makes from these shows have never been higher. The sets do not need great artists as they are so much more technologically advanced and intricate. Also the turnaround on some of these shows are very quick so dark periods would cost the house a fortune.I have worked with artists on some sets who are amazing at their job and work full time. But these are only for touch ups and small scenery jobs. One client of mine are now owned by the nfl and are looking to open houses in China and more in new York. If you work in the west end you will see queues every morning for any returned tickets at sold out shows....

Whatson, by Unica on Oct 19, 2014 20:18:29 GMT 1, Back on topic.... So how do we find out if the buyer paid up for the eBay canvas? It's intriguing I would think if it was re listed. Frankly i'm not surprised by the price that particular MW canvas sold for, its become difficult to purchase his recent canvases, anyone who attempted to pick one up at recent Graffiti Prints releases or at his gallery shows can attest to that.. Agreed there are a lot of prints out there, and they don't seem very flippable as the sheer number sitting on ebay reflects, I think its just the sheer volume and similarity of prints that holds them back. I just don't see many canvases of his recent work and when I do its in galleries and the prices seem to rise every show he has.

I don't care for some of the other images, I couldn't really see them on my wall. Unfortunately the ones I like at this gallery aren't available and the prices were very reasonable. I'd jump at the chance to buy that Zebra split canvas.

Whatson, by Poster Bob on Nov 1, 2014 17:22:47 GMT 1, There are two things that bother me about this print: the left sleeve and the wall. The left sleeve is too bunched up where it touches the wall. You should in my mind, see his bare hand on the wall. Instead what you see is some type of stump covered in sweatshirt. Second, the wall is not properly defined and there is no sense of depth. It's hard to see that he's scaling it.
