Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by beautifulcrime on Oct 23, 2008 22:38:42 GMT 1, In a room that was more focused on barely hushed chatter amongst some stiff collar nโ brogue types, and the occasional sound of drilling in another room, it was a dog pissing on your shoes kind of a night.
A number of major Banksyโs didnโt hit their guide and didnโt sell and nearly all the others, except a bellow par Tesco Value Tomato Soup canvas and a good Laugh Now original, didnโt reach the bottom end of the guide price.
Smaller Neateโs did well, large oneโs hit guide. But this was a pretty mediocre list. Given Jose Parlaโs show at Elms two weeks previous was a sellout this auction featured some reliably steady prints, that raised little excitement.
One Artist, Asha Zero had an original, acrylic on board with a guide of ยฃ600-800, which raised the odd gasp and quickly raised paddle as it hit ยฃ2400. Clearly people in the room were watching other people in the room to see if they knew something about Zero they didnโt. So there either is something about Zero that we donโt know in which case please tell us! or to make a dull night more exciting people played paddle tennis with the first ball to come along.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by Daniel Silk on Oct 23, 2008 22:42:04 GMT 1, Can anyone tell me the catalogue estimate of the F**k Lichtenstein piece in the sale please?. 5000-8000 as far as i know sold for 6000 inc fees.
That was a really really good buy for 6k I think we might look back at this one in a few years time and realize there was some big bargains to be had tonight. IMO

I concur...this was very very cheap and an iconic dface piece and also the dstq sold recently was dirt cheap IMO.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by hlarmy on Oct 23, 2008 23:09:37 GMT 1, Asha Zero's a much sought-after South African artist - each painting (not collage!) takes a number of weeks to complete which means getting your hands on his work is very difficult. He has a long-waiting list in South Africa and this auction will certainly serve to raise his profile over here - this was never going to go for less than ยฃ2k and I'm somewhat surprised it didn't fetch more. Definitely one to watch and an artist you'll hear a lot more of in the next 12 months ...
As for the auction, mixed results - the room lacked the kind of buzz and excitement of the February auction. I found it slightly boring to be honest and thought the auctioneer did very little to liven things up - in my limited experience, she seemed far more interested in getting home than getting a decent price on each lot.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by guest2 on Oct 24, 2008 1:13:20 GMT 1, thats dface diptych was a steal and i wish i bought it but was expecting it to do well and was not quite in gear. Got out bid on the KAWS once again but shep did well amongst alot other big artists who crumbled. The parla was the correct price in my opinion for an 'extra' small watercolour. Not a great run in for a major show for Faile, Walker continues to do well at auction.
Def think Bonhams blew it a little on the poor diplay for the preview. Matt Small piece did quite well considering his painting was on the floor in the corner somewhere!
So...who bought that Dface diptych? Pm me And PM me if you have any KAWS.

agree mate, the Matt Small was a great piece, even without a great position for the preview the cream always rises to the top.
Nick continues to shine.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by pezlow on Oct 24, 2008 7:22:12 GMT 1, Having earlier stated that the Colour Soup Cans were not mint (information I received second-hand). I have spoken to the owner who has assured me that these were in fact A1 condition. If anyone on here is looking for a colour soup can please PM me so I can forward their details to the seller.
I had a good look at the colour soup cans and at least one of them had a crease, albeit small, and some very small tears to the edge. They are not therefore mint.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by Pattycakes on Oct 24, 2008 8:29:47 GMT 1, The auctioneer is allowed to make up fake bids in the room up to the reserve, so all that bidding you saw on the unsold lots, was in most places just the auctioneer trying to get the crown going. i have to say I expected it to be a complete disaster, and it wasn't completely awful, somethings did sell well, but in the most part it reflected the major down turn in the market. One thing that is very clear is that the Banksy print market is completely over cooked and prices have completely changed for these things. It's been a long time coming is all I can say.
