How to win friends and influence the Banksy FORUM, by Deleted on Jan 12, 2015 3:35:08 GMT 1, take a forum centred mainly around the buying and selling of prints..particularly Banksys'
ensure there's no real checks and balances in place for membership, or integrity
create a few accounts from different ips and email addresses
round up between 3 and 5 mates all with some cash, say from the last round of bankers bonuses
get them to create a few accounts
proceed to look at the cheapest prints available, say unsigned,
buy as many as you can get your hands on, preferably as cheaply as possible
do this in plain sight, to gain respectability and a good name in the community
Slowly over time place the prints you've bought for sale at inflated prices (do this smartly, only rising steadily)
Either state it's been sold quickly, or have one of your other user names state they bought it
The next for 'legitimate' sale will now use this 'fake' sale as a sign post and also you'll be on hand to give some advice on 'pricing'
Continue to sell items now that they should sell legitimately and using the above methods you can slowly pump the market, all the time gaining a good name
Owners will through insecurity and greed uphold these new inflated prices
Buyers with little experience, will believe the market they're shown
And voila
At this point use your earnings to move up the ladder, ultimately to originals where a similar method can be used only on a smaller scale and if there are enough buyers in the market with the cash and little knowledge (perhaps some of your other banker mates?)
The danger comes when this stops and people pull out, then it collapses, a few are left counting their cash and alot aren't
But of course this is all just a fairy tale from la la land, so honestly no one needs to worry, promise x

How to win friends and influence the Banksy FORUM, by Unica on Jan 12, 2015 3:59:45 GMT 1, I find it rather hard to believe this forum is propping up the Banksy market, I don't see too many canvases or uniques being traded here. Prints are the lowest rung on the ladder.

How to win friends and influence the Banksy FORUM, by mmmike on Jan 12, 2015 5:04:15 GMT 1, I don't think people are as organized as you think but it is quite easy to see prices get pushed up by greed, speculation and wishful thinking. A lot of people have a vested interest in prices rising, others take their opinions as fact and the bubble gets bigger.
If you are going to plunk down thousands of dollars or GBP based on opinions of people you don't know on a forum then you are opening yourself up for a potential disappointment.
Prints are copies of sometimes pretty pictures, not investments. Just because you have made money on them in the past doesn't mean anything for the future.

I am sure the concept of buying and selling Banksy prints with a couple of extra accounts and mates etc has and does happen. Dr Jimmy for example. There are also plenty of people who say great price, great seller etc While he does his no low ball offers etc etc.
however as for propping up the market bit far fetched and daft IMO as there are what 45 Banksy prints average 500 unsigned that gives a universe of around 20,000. Which is rather a lot to be buying up enough to control price especially on a small scale number of active members such as this place.
plenty of Banksy signed and unsigned go through the major auction houses to a market far larger than this forum.
think prices in general rise due to supply and demand and of course some will have invested in extra prints etc expecting a rise in price but that's very different to propping a false market up. More a Bambi area that
plus of course the one important fact if you get Banker bonuses then a grand or a couple of grand on an unsigned Banksy is neither here nor there. They are far to busy flogging currencies, snorting white powder to bother flogging Banksy's. At best your looking at a flipper and a couple of mates trying to pull a bit of a con and the odd banker possibly with a nasal problem.
anyway hope the original market crashes soon

How to win friends and influence the Banksy FORUM, by iamzero on Jan 12, 2015 8:17:56 GMT 1, This has been happening with gallery buy ups and members posing as galleries or fake members hoovering up prints to sell to galleries for ages. They think people don't know who they are but they forgot that they've dealt with people I've spoken to and forum members PM each other. Very shady but that how it works is the sad news. Get over it.

A conspiracy theory my missus would be proud of.
The number of prints bought and sold on here is tiny.
How do you explain the auction prices which are marketed to the world?
Or are these 'bankers' also buying up all of these to justify forum prices?
Bloody bankers ruin our banks and then take our Banksy's.

I've not got the time to provide you with auction results, but I'm pretty sure you are capable of finding those yourself.

How to win friends and influence the Banksy FORUM, by Dr Plip on Jan 12, 2015 10:23:17 GMT 1, BR's correct in that you only have to start the price increase, and all the non-cartel print owners will raise their prices accordingly. People always want as much as they can get for an item. If you have seen a few prints sell quickly and for £500 more than they were last month, if you have one to sell, you will raise your price.
Problem is, what do you say to a person that has money and wants to buy a Banksy now? "Don't buy that, it's not really worth that much"? They will do what they need to, even if it means paying more than you think they should. Like when people massively overreach themselves to pay for ridiculously overpriced houses. You can say "That price is ludicrous" all you want, but apart from being vocal about it, you really won't be able to do anything until those that own the items are prepared to (or need to) let them go for less.

(perhaps literally).
As with many things where waiting is necessary - .. you wait a while then a few come along at the same time.
With B it's a waiting game... it used to be a sport - perhaps not so much so now.
Many of us know this - and or .. have moved on to other new fresh and considerably cheaper artists... where the "available market" .. may not exist to the same extent (not available market) as above.

Come back when you've truly got an 'exclusive' to tell us and stop pointing out the bleeding obvious.

How to win friends and influence the Banksy FORUM, by yoyosh on Jan 12, 2015 15:13:03 GMT 1, Is the point of this posting to ruffle feathers or work towards changing what could be a serious problem on the boards? If you think there's a specific issue here and some forum member(s) are doing shady business....why not just name them and let them defend themselves? Or perhaps we should all just "read between the lines" and hope for the best?
Is the point of this posting to ruffle feathers or work towards changing what could be a serious problem on the boards? If you think there's a specific issue here and some forum member(s) are doing shady business....why not just name them and let them defend themselves? Or perhaps we should all just "read between the lines" and hope for the best?

How to win friends and influence the Banksy FORUM, by FЯ on Jan 12, 2015 15:23:46 GMT 1, This website contributes nothing towards what things are worth. A few blokes on an old website (which has been surpassed by social media and will eventually need to change format) does not constitute a market.

How to win friends and influence the Banksy FORUM, by Deleted on Jan 12, 2015 16:19:17 GMT 1, Apparently I am too naive and did not suspect price manipulation (never have been good at reading between the lines). The praising/hyping of an artist... Now that was easier to discern.
I am not sure if I should be glad that this manipulation does not affect me as I cannot afford current crazy prices. Hell, I could not have afforded them three years ago, ha!

How to win friends and influence the Banksy FORUM, by WILLYBKLN on Jan 12, 2015 16:26:41 GMT 1, Personally do not think you can use this forum to say that prices are being manipulated/inflated as the market on here is still cheaper than say any online "gallery" selling Banksy's or auction houses for that matter...
As someone previously stated, the volume of Banksy sales through this forum is minuscule compared to the inventory available (or unavailable currently) worldwide.
At this point it's just an issue of basic economics and supply/demand..IMO.

How to win friends and influence the Banksy FORUM, by Deleted on Jan 12, 2015 16:44:39 GMT 1, Personally im not involved in any manipulation of prices here or anywhere else, i also dont know of any one or group of people who bought up to later manipulate the market(not saying it doesnt happen). In hindsight br was right in regards to me commenting on yesterdays thread whether its a genuine honest opinion or not it could easily be seen as manipulation. I now this thread is out of concern for the market and probably more so for newer members who could be easily led although br is old enough and ugly enough to speak for himself i just didnt want yesterdays debate with br being personally connected to this thread which i know it isnt after speaking privately.

How to win friends and influence the Banksy FORUM, by bgt5002 on Jan 12, 2015 16:45:38 GMT 1, I don't think the market is being manipulated-- people pay what they deem fair, and that's that. I wish, however, that more sales were public via eBay, or that people actually listed prices on their listings. We're screwing ourselves, gents.

How to win friends and influence the Banksy FORUM, by Rouen Cathedral on Jan 12, 2015 16:47:04 GMT 1, I was actually thinking about this the other day.
I saw this same exact thing happen in another hobby and started to wonder if it was going on here as well. I mean it makes perfect sense and in sure almost every hobby has something like this occur. I see no reason why the online art market would be different.
I think if you did name names that would def. bring light to the question.

How to win friends and influence the Banksy FORUM, by bgt5002 on Jan 12, 2015 16:51:47 GMT 1, It's definitely happened in the comic art and comic book hobby. That hobby feels wayyy more transparent than this one, mainly due to the lack of gallerists.
