The cost was not huge, but into the 3k range, which is a lot for me. After getting a picture via text from the artist (or someone close to/rep), I said I'll take it. Happy. 2 weeks later I received the canvas. It's "close" to what I was sent picture wise, but it also lacks details that are so noticeable from the picture I was sent. Not even close in my eyes. So, I thought, was told, I was buying an original, and the f'ng thing seems to be a quick re-make of the piece I was told I was purchasing. It's a REALLY cool piece. I'd hate to jump on a sword and get into any big dick contest, but... I'm so unhappy they pulled this on me. I can't out the artist, not my thing.

A well-known (arguably legendary) artist started producing small editions a couple years ago. I love their work and wanted to support, so I purchased a piece pre-sale. It's now going on 2 years and the edition still hasn't been produced or delivered. So frustrating and disappointing.

They send you the wrong or a different item.
Could be an honest mistake - or a deliberate attempt to mislead you.
Since they do not respond to your messages, I would guess it's the latter.
In case you paid by bank transfer or PP F&F there is no way to get your money back
without their actions. So if they keep ignoring you, naming and shaming would be the next step.
Good for you it's not your style. But don't get f#cked over for 3K.....

Well if your piece was handmade it is an original! Artists make variations of the same piece all the time and they are all originals.
I understand very well that you are upset about not getting what you were shown and there seems to have been some very bad communication from the artists side here and they need to up their game. I hope you can sort it out with them personally and to your satisfaction. I think public naming and shaming for matters like this is very distasteful and as is getting the lynch mob out by fuelling all this speculation. All the best of luck!
