It was flagged up as a very high risk transaction, and for that reason I didn't accept the payment. Lucky escape it seems! This guy is busy. We have orders packed and waiting to leave the gallery for him!

If the bank says the transaction was fraud, then the police have to investigate.
That is providing the gallery actually went to the police and reported it.

i used to know all manner of ruffians, footpads & thieves as i was growing up. most got out of it, a small handful still involved in the business now. one aside- a long term skagger- none of them are involved in anything face to face any longer- the hassle isnt worth it.
however, they are bang in to online stuff as metroplois has been involved in. reason ? the risk/ reward ration is so much much better - they know they have virtually zero chance of being banged up, even oif they are nicked, its hard to argue for a prosecution case with the CPS.
its better to lose a sale than lose the lot- these people are pretty confident
