Breaking news - Panama papers, by Black Apple Art on Apr 4, 2016 0:04:17 GMT 1, Will most likely be the same as when UBS was investigated. Big fines (aka payoffs) and possibly a token sentence in Club Fed for a low level sacrificial lamb.

Big fines (aka payoffs) and possibly a token sentence in Club Fed for a low level sacrificial lamb. I very much doubt it if the breaking news is anything to go by. This will be of more far-reaching significance. Given that there are 11.5 m documents it will take some time for things to surface - and some things will be given more prominence than others ... In the meantime we can expect daily revelations.

Breaking news - Panama papers, by Viking Surfer on Apr 4, 2016 10:40:15 GMT 1, I highly doubt any real action will be taken in prosecuting those involved.
Simply put, the people implicated are far too powerful.

Breaking news - Panama papers, by Viking Surfer on Apr 4, 2016 10:47:04 GMT 1, Also if somebody wants a really simple way to understand the Panama papers and what happened here is an 'explain like i'm 5' x/post from reddit...
"When you get a quarter you put it in the piggy bank. The piggy bank is on a shelf in your closet. Your mom knows this and she checks on it every once in a while, so she knows when you put more money in or spend it.
Now one day, you might decide "I don't want mom to look at my money." So you go over to Johnny's house with an extra piggy bank that you're going to keep in his room. You write your name on it and put it in his closet. Johnny's mom is always very busy, so she never has time to check on his piggy bank. So you can keep yours there and it will stay a secret.
Now all the kids in the neighborhood think this is a good idea, and everyone goes to Johnny's house with extra piggy banks. Now Johnny's closet is full of piggy banks from everyone in the neighborhood. One day, Johnny's mom comes home and sees all the piggy banks. She gets very mad and calls everyone's parents to let them know.
Now not everyone did this for a bad reason. Eric's older brother always steals from his piggy bank, so he just wanted a better hiding spot. Timmy wanted to save up to buy his mom a birthday present without her knowing. Sammy just did it because he thought it was fun. But many kids did do it for a bad reason. Jacob was stealing people's lunch money and didn't want his parents to figure it out. Michael was stealing money from his mom's purse. Fat Bobby's parents put him on a diet, and didn't want them to figure out when he was buying candy.
Now in real life, many very important people were just caught hiding their piggy banks at Johnny's house in Panama. Today their moms all found out. Pretty soon, we'll know more about which of these important people were doing it for bad reasons and which were doing it for good reasons. But almost everyone is in trouble regardless, because it's against the rules to keep secrets no matter what."

Breaking news - Panama papers, by Viking Surfer on Apr 4, 2016 12:08:38 GMT 1, Only issue is, I doubt there will be many real life 'moms' to hold these people accountable, again because they are just too rich and powerful (for the most part).
Actually, has anybody seen the film 'The Big Short'? (Incredible cast). It's based on the true story of the banks and their sketchy dealings that led to the last recession in America. Despite the banks and their corruption, the only people that got burned in the end were the average people.
However in regard to the Panama papers, it will be interesting seeing how all these extra revenue streams were generated

Breaking news - Panama papers, by mojo on Apr 4, 2016 20:01:16 GMT 1, I'm not even slightly surprised, It's disgusting that still nothing has been done to stop this nonsense..... oh yeah maybe it has something to do with who's in charge! I've been fined for putting my meager tax return in late in the past and yet these corrupt greedy self appointed untouchables weave all sorts of complex schemes so they can theoretically steal from our very pockets while they sit back in an air of superiority making out it's our fault that everything has fucked up, off shore, off shite ..... close the lot of them down and make them pay like the rest of us, fine them and force them to payback what they owe. Their greed effects everything and everybody. The Cameron family have been 'legally' swindling the system for years ..... hypocrites the lot of them.

Breaking news - Panama papers, by Deleted on Apr 4, 2016 21:11:41 GMT 1, I thought it was just cold war anti putin propaganda to begin with as no US names etc mentioned. EU not happy with new Ukraine PM and Iceland and stuff like that.
It does look like the tip of a very big and corrupt iceberg.
Wonder if golden boy, Castro has his billions offshore and other so called friends of the western interests.
This type of corruption has been rife for decades and it looks like people working at these institutions had enough of turning a blind eye and did not want to be implicated when the s**t hit the fun. There will be repercussions if past events are anything to go by from lawers bankers brokers middle men jumping off roof tops or having accidents. To politicians that suddenly retire.
I wonder about former Luxembourg PM Juncker and his countries banking activities. Wonder what Juncker is doing now?

Im looking forward to seeing how this unfolds over the next few months. I think the ripples from this will bring some change. Sadly not the one above, but this really is a popcorn moment that will roll on for a while.

Pressure from Corbyn who is insisting on an independent investigation into those involved in the UK. Has offered to publish his own tax return and said others should do the same! C'mon Cameron!!

Isn't the point of the offshore bit that you don't bother to tell the tax man, as he can't see it anyway? to me showing the tax return is closing the stable door after the money has already bolted. Am i wrong in the assumption the tax man won't have seen/be able to see that money?
Not5 that I'm jumping on JC, just what i thought when dodgy Dave mentioned it yesterday.

Yup that's exactly the point, so offering to show your tax return is just a piss take from a politician who would rather ride a wave than try to have an honest point of view... Perhaps the issue is specifically whether or not DC has benefited from his father's setup and has failed to declare it. As the beneficiary of a trust fund or recipient of shares etc. one would expect that income to be declared on the tax return, especially by DC. It doesn't mean he has done anything legally wrong (morally/ethically is another issue). If there is nothing declared, people will only speculate. If there is anything declared ...regardless of the amount, he'll be roasted. I say, pretty sticky either way.

You are right. I took it to be a symbolic gesture in transparency. JC was willing to disclose all his income, and DC should do the same (whether on his return or not).

Breaking news - Panama papers, by rufas on Apr 7, 2016 22:30:20 GMT 1, Cameron finally admits to profiting from shares he sold in 2010 from the offshore fund. He has obviously hugely benefited from the wealth they have generated throughout his life, but has finally been forced to admit this much. Edward Snowden calling on British people to follow Iceland's example and take to the streets and demand that he resigns. Cameron loves to bang on about how Labour are a threat to the economy.....rich in every sense of the word. Get the pots and pans out I say!

Breaking news - Panama papers, by rufas on Apr 7, 2016 22:46:27 GMT 1, The bloke deflects blame better than Teflon Tony, his background in PR and grooming for the top job has enabled him to squirm out of previous problems. Corbyn never expected to be leader, and his milder manners mean he doesn't go for the throat like some others would. But these sorts of perceived injustices have lead to the popularity of Corbyn, and Sanders in the States. If he can't put Cameron to the sword now....
Dave's having a a tough time, but he's brought it all on himself, and while I'm not sure he will resign yet....I can't say I feel sorry for him. Question Time on in a minute should be interesting

Breaking news - Panama papers, by RoboJ on Apr 8, 2016 13:26:29 GMT 1, There's 2 things here. Tax dodging/saving and illegal money laundering.
I'm not condoning anything but it's very easy for people to point fingers at those in schemes etc to save tax (I am not in one!). I am not aware of a single person that will voluntarily pay as much tax as possible to help fund the state.
I know I'm probably in the minority on here being a street art forum and very anti Tory. but I feel the torys have done a good job so far. Yes it's not perfect but i feel in a better position than when we started. When it comes to tax dodging, in the world as I have seen it, it's full of people trying to take advantage of schemes and people to keep/get as much as they can. Whether that's Saving taxes or getting benefits they shouldn't be on. I know lots of people on benefits that have no intention of working to help pay for society and yet they also have the loudest voices when it comes to condemning others. I'm not pointing fingers at all. Just its frustrating as a tax payer. Both extremes want as much as they can get while giving very little in return.
