Blu ๐ฎ๐น Bologna Street Art โข Print Release โข Art For Sale, by Viva Hate on May 1, 2008 10:43:09 GMT 1, Ok it's not great but the Tate, believe it or not, are skint. They need the corporate pound to put on shows like this. I'd still rather it was done with corporate sponsorship than not being done at all.
i dont know about that pez...I believe with some top jobs there you have to have an interview with top government officials aswel, so this would suggest its partially government funded......or i could be wrong

Blu ๐ฎ๐น Bologna Street Art โข Print Release โข Art For Sale, by pezlow on May 1, 2008 10:49:58 GMT 1, It receives some government funding yes, but it's financial resources are meagre compared with other contemporary art museums such as moma, the guggenheim etc etc. That's why big commissions have to be begged such as the recent Hockney donation.
Look I'm really not that keen on it being sponsored by Nissan either but that, unfortunately, is the way that we treat arts in this country - they have to be paid for at least in substantial part from the private sector.
Putting on a show like this isn't cheap - you have to fly the artists over and put them up (probably), provide them with materials, insure it, create promotional stuff, advertise it etc etc. It's just unrealistic to expect an organisation like the tate to fund that from their meagre resources.

Blu ๐ฎ๐น Bologna Street Art โข Print Release โข Art For Sale, by dotdot on May 1, 2008 11:03:05 GMT 1, Hello This thread has done well on the topic / off topic and underlying issues.
The objective to the naked eye is simple. Bring street (not urban) art to the masses - ok more people. Increase their awareness that it's not all junk etc. Do it at the Tate - even more 'credibility' that something outside is coming or could come inside - the art world - not necessarily establishment.
The involvement of big sponsorship is interesting if only for the question of why ? If it is the only way - the tate should say it was the only way. Places adverts round the building will be caught by the eye - but not by the papers - who will not entertain such blatant free adds.
So - in effect the market for the placed product is - the person who visits the exhibit - right ?
Now - relate this to Cans Festival - anyone sponsoring that ? no ? - why not. That's going to be expensive right ?
Now you may ask yourself - before shouting at me - why is there a difference here ?
Whilst it might be to 'world we live in' we don't all have the same views - have sky - read the sun etc- that's the whole point - it's only the world if we choose to participate and - be - if you like - influenced by .... well Cans or Tate mod

Blu ๐ฎ๐น Bologna Street Art โข Print Release โข Art For Sale, by pezlow on May 1, 2008 11:09:09 GMT 1, Well cans is put on at least in part by a commercial gallery, will be on for a relatively short period of time - 3 days, and will no doubt be funded in indirect part by private gallery profits. The tate is a not for profit organisation that is putting on a show for 3 months, on a huge scale, for free and for no commercial benefit (save I guess for sales of a few books and the odd poster).

Blu ๐ฎ๐น Bologna Street Art โข Print Release โข Art For Sale, by robotoil on May 1, 2008 15:10:08 GMT 1, Hey it would be better if you didn't need corporate sponsorship, but I'm more happy that Blu is getting the chance to show at a prominent place. I can't remember the last time I was at a gallery show and people were upset that Dewers (take your pick) was giving away free booze.

Blu ๐ฎ๐น Bologna Street Art โข Print Release โข Art For Sale, by thesewalls on May 12, 2008 20:26:26 GMT 1, got my DEMOS print in the other day - it's HUGE and looks amazing in the flesh...gonna be a stunner on the wall. can't wait to see what goes into that empty white circle!
and yes, the art market sometimes makes NO sense. than again, sometimes a lot of things on this world make no sense. i personally will be purchasing all future BLU prints that are images of something once on a building...the transition from large scale to print form is surely an interesting one, but at the end of the day it's a GREAT print with AMAZING detail. Also, i love some of his originals, just out of my price range...his concepts are cool, techniques and style original, but the massive monsters really do it for me, hence DEMOS being my first BLU purchase.
