Blu 🇮🇹 Bologna Street Art • Print Release • Art For Sale, by Daylight Robber on Mar 11, 2019 22:26:03 GMT 1, The debilitating cost of having two kids at university continues, and so I am now reluctantly considering selling this piece. An etching by Blu. This is number 1 of an edition of just 3. It’s framed by one of the best (Pauli or John Jones, I forget which). I was wondering whether anyone had a view as to a reasonable sale price, as I have not kept up to date with the value of Blu’s work. http://instagr.am/p/BNQK1SLDlVa
Sell the kids. Pick your least favourite and sell that one 1st. If what you raise from that sale isn't enough to see the other one through Uni, then you'll have to sell the 2nd one too.

Don’t tempt me! It is a wrench.

yes Demos would be much cheaper than a Rennes - didn’t the last Rennes AP sell for approx $10K USD maybe one year or so ago?

the interesting points about the ebay listing for me were: (1) the work is outside of the UV edition of 25; (2) the work looks to be a tighter crop (they cut the paper down to the edge of the image) (3) the watercolor layer in most of the UVs (and this AP) has what i am characterizing as registration issues as it goes through the eyes (which stand out in the original version) and are muddy around the heart (which also stands out in the original version). a few UVs had better registration on the eyes &/or heart (*) compare to the one i got: urbanartassociation.com/post/1703056
that said, i also like this messy one. and i cannot find it on ebay anymore (edit: it is now listed at € 15000 (close to $17k)).
a Demos UV sold november 2018 for € 2500 (with buyers premium) and we had multiple folks on this board indicating they would have gone higher but had issues with the auction.
a Demos UV sold january 2018 for $3750 (with buyers premium)
these are more iconic Blu (related to two murals, a super organism made up of many small independent things), and have significantly more wall power, than many of the small drawings that sell for much more.

nice work Coach. my feeling is the etchings - which are extremely rare and reasonably sized and from such a tiny edition size that this work, for example, may never reappear on the market - should trade within the range of the Unique Variants (Demos, Rennes, and Headquarters) -- which might be $4k-$17k based on recent sales/current offerings (i think a great Rennes will outpace Demos and Headquarters). i also feel like they should be trading within the range of the small drawings (which i've heard trade for $11k-$17k). i think the best/most iconic Blu small drawings should trade for more than the etchings and UVs (the value of an original iconic work) but the rest should be competitive (the value of owning an original work versus the value of owning a larger/more satisfying/more iconic unique variant).
i also have an etching (urbanartassociation.com/post/1691561) and will be curious to know what result you achieve.

The sacrifice you're making is a noble one. A badge of honour. Just like when you let go of the Golf Sale.
To me, this demonstrates you're keeping your eye on the ball. On what's actually important. In the decades to come, your kids will very likely appreciate what you did for their benefit, even more so than they do now.
__________
I'm at a stage where I'm no longer embarrassed by the realisation my own values have become so similar to those of my parents. For both of them, it was Education, Education, Education. There existed nothing higher.
That priority was informed and reinforced by the knowledge that what we learn and experience is a hugely valuable asset. Unlike mere lifestyles or material possessions, it is something nobody and nothing — no person, government, regime or war — can ever take away.
If circumstances one day make it necessary to flee empty-handed at a moment's notice, you will always still have the precious resource of what's in your head.

Thank you met. Couldn’t agree more. Whilst I will miss what has been and will be sold, I certainly won’t regret the sales for just the reasons you so eloquently expressed.

Hovering over the like button and going to Press it I realised that wasn’t how I wanted to truly express myself. Coach as a fellow parent and collector if alnowledge the sacrifice you’re making (I think we may have been together the night you bought this piece?). I echo Patrick’s sentiment that giving to another ahead of yourself is the true embodiment of both parental love and true kindness.
There are two ways to look at this: A simple commercial sale or a selfless gift from one human to another/ from father to son. I know how I see it.
I’ve liked this post also!!! But really I think as Met mentioned before the like button should probably be removed to ecourage people to express themselves fully and not take the easy option.
I hope to see you both soon.

Blu 🇮🇹 Bologna Street Art • Print Release • Art For Sale, by nex on Mar 16, 2019 1:47:07 GMT 1, I like where this thread has gone , I’ve used art sales to buy and then keep a roof over my young family’s head as life’s problems have rained down on us, there’s perspective and it’s certainly not the ‘flipper scum’ stereotype that’s often portrayed here.

Once again thank you for the kind words Danny. There is something very wrong with the funding for uni system at the moment. But there is nothing more important to me than their education.

Blu? But the one listed on the bay doesn't appear to match any of the 25 listed on S.C.

It seems like it. The special hand finished version of Rennes should be a numbered edition of 25 and signed. Such as this example The one on ebay appears to be an AP which shygetshigh83 is referring to and indeed doesn't seem to match any of the 25 listed on S.C.

Blu 🇮🇹 Bologna Street Art • Print Release • Art For Sale, by sapi on Mar 19, 2019 21:03:07 GMT 1, Blu? But the one listed on the bay doesn't appear to match any of the 25 listed on S.C. My bad 🙈. It seems like it. The special hand finished version of Rennes should be a numbered edition of 25 and signed. Such as this example The one on ebay appears to be an AP which shygetshigh83 is referring to and indeed doesn't seem to match any of the 25 listed on S.C.
i think people are confusing the unique variants (what Studio Cromie called their “special editions” of 25 signed/numbered works) with APs (artist proofs) outside of the editions. i did not know there were any APs (particularly APs related to the special edition) until i saw that ebay post, but it makes sense that they would exist (and that print would not have made the official special edition).
i have read in the past people suggesting there were problems with the Studio Cromie special editions - something like Blu was not involved in making them (e.g., he did not choose the ink or watercolors, or how they were applied to the prints), and i do not know how true this is (same for the current suggestion - “a reprint without any involvement of Blu”). for me, this is a non-issue -- the works are signed and numbered by Blu (as stated on the Studio Cromie website). Blu is no wallflower and would not have signed the work (or allowed SC to sell them or to claim they were signed by Blu) if he did not ultimately agree/approve of the work (and instead would have gone public if there were problems - he does not mince words). As with all artists, i take his signature on the work to mean he approves of the work/is claiming it as his work. Warhol, for example, had a lot of people working for him, sometimes making independent/artistic decisions as they made the work, but he ultimately approved of the work (and signed it) or did not (and this is not incidental - the artist’s judgment in the final sign off is a key component and control to the overall quality of their work). Andy’s former studio assistants can make copies of the work in the same manner (and have), or even make new works in the same style, but without Andy’s signoff they are not Warhols.
i also prefer the standard edition of Rennes (the placement of the ink is more considered, allowing for shading that reenforces the overall work). as noted, many of the UVs had registration issues which muddied the impact of the eyes & the heart (a small number had better registration). that said, i also recognize that the unique variants are more collectible (as they will stand out more than the standard edition, and are closer to original works being unique variants versus standard editions). people will be more familiar with the standard edition and the UVs pop out as unique in comparison. they also have more of a messy aesthetic that fits more with the quick and dirty street work (which may be one of the reasons Blu signed them if he was not involved in the decision-making as has been suggested).

Blu 🇮🇹 Bologna Street Art • Print Release • Art For Sale, by sapi on Mar 20, 2019 23:15:22 GMT 1, i was reminded of this when reading about SF Bay Area art collectors who have a purpose built home in Napa for their video collection in the NY Times. the first video work they bought (that started the collection focus) was a video in an edition of 300 for $350 (albeit by Swiss artists who are now significant players in the contemporary art world). this reinforces the validity of buying the Blu video and installing it on a dedicated monitor (which is likely less expensive than framing a print these days and Muto and Big Bang Big Boom are among his best works)
