Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by pezlow on Nov 12, 2008 14:57:47 GMT 1, For many years turk has been challenging us with what art is. For his postgrad degree show at the RCA (which led him to fail his degree by the way) the work of art was a blue plaque which he mounted on the wall of the RCA and read something like "Gavin Turk Artist Studied here 19... to 19..." Turk's early work centred almost exclusively on his signature. He did huge canvasses which he just signed in huge writing (often multicolour). His argument was that art had become such a commodity that people no longer looked at the art itself but just at who the artist is. Thus what is the point of the artist creating the artwork at all if the buyer is only after his signature. More recently he had gone on to sign things to make them art, following on from the lead from the likes of Manzoni and Duchamp. He also does things like cast a rubbish bag in bronze then paint it black and stick it in the corner of a gallery to play with our perceptions of what art is and what it can be. For my part I think he is a clever artist who has done something different. I wouldn't spend the money on the brick, mainly because I too struggle with the concept of paying that sort of money for a signed house brick. Nevertheless I enjoy seeing what Turk does.
It's a huge coup for Auction sab to have got an exclusive by Turk, whatever you may think of his art he is a massive name in the UK british art scene.

Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by Deleted on Nov 12, 2008 14:59:33 GMT 1, this is an interesting one, Gavin Turk's inherently 'street' to me because he's sticking two fingers up at what Art should be and how we should view it.
At the end of the day is all we're really interested in is who did it and how much it's worth and for that he should be applauded.....now....whether this is particularly suited to the crowd on this forum, I find harder to answer?500 is alot for a witty idea, a signature and a brick, but possibly to a white cube mailling list you could get away with selling this for a lot more.
brave idea AuctionSab and an interesting Artist, but maybe the wrong demographic to be selling to?

Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by Daniel Silk on Nov 12, 2008 15:04:41 GMT 1, Im not sure about it being a coup Maybe Auction Sab was just an obvious choice for a release like this. I guess the artist looks for the people that would most likely buy a piece like that and Auction Saboteur was at the center of that scene.

Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by edcase on Nov 12, 2008 15:06:13 GMT 1, I am shocked about the negativity of this piece, IMHO it just shows the level of knowledge and understanding about art from a lot of the people on this forum. I'm going to get flamed for saying it, but frankly I don't care.
This piece is pure genius and I just hope I got my email in in time as I was out and about when the news dropped.

Personally I rate him above Emin. I went up to edinburgh for her retrospective earlier in the year and it left me cold. Just IMHO of course.
cheers ed

I'd agree altho to a wider audience she is probably better known - well done on buying - just read that 7 have already sold so i'll eat my words about this being the wrong demographic
major PR for a small time concern like AuctionSab I'd say

Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by elwheel on Nov 12, 2008 15:23:41 GMT 1, Maybe AuctionSab are way bigger than I imagine (not up on London stuff) and can easily attract the likes of Turk so maybe me using the word coup was a bit much, but from my understanding I would consider it a coup for any gallery to represent him.
On another point, you can buy 1000 reclaimed brick here at ยฃ650, maybe London brick is more expensive, either way....(looks at garden wall...thinks of wifes reaction....stops looking at garden wall)...

I assume SPQR means that you make it sound as if you do not know who Gavin is by referring to him in this manner.

Well done Ed! I like Gavin Turk but I think this one would take to much explaining, to myself as well as to others, don't think I could justify it.
But if I could, I'd be pleased to have something of his. Great artist.

Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by underpaidartist on Nov 12, 2008 16:11:01 GMT 1,
That apple core is very clever, cast in bronze and painted so well that you could be forgiven for thinking it's simply a real apple core.
Gavin Turk is very highly regarded and should be shown no less respect than any other artist, I'm surprised so many people seem to know little about him.

Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by elwheel on Nov 12, 2008 16:12:12 GMT 1, Gotta disagree with you on the Carl Andre analogy graffoto. The only reason I mentioned him earlier was by way of second guessing the edition size and release format (no exhibition). The only similarities between Equivalence and this Turk piece is the delivery (brick). Andrรฉ was all about minimalism, the doing away with decor and superflous elements - the equivalence title was a reference to maths and physics theories. Turk, as Pezlow mentioned, is closer to Manzoni (i.e. artists shit) where the work is all about authorship rather than the actual product.
