Gavin Turk is very highly regarded and should be shown no less respect than any other artist, I'm surprised so many people seem to know little about him.

All the pieces in Silkys post are bronze casts. when you take them out their context and just show photos with no explanation, they don't make any sense.
As I asked earlier, does anyone know if the bricks are bronze casts or normal clay bricks?

The only reason I mentioned him earlier was by way of second guessing the edition size and release format (no exhibition). The only similarities between Equivalence and this Turk piece is the delivery (brick). Andrรฉ was all about minimalism, the doing away with decor and superflous elements - the equivalence title was a reference to maths and physics theories. Turk, as Pezlow mentioned, is closer to Manzoni (i.e. artists s**t) where the work is all about authorship rather than the actual product.

I think Turk's degree show was outstanding. I think his bronze sculptures of trash bags are brilliant. He's got one of the most interesting minds in contemporary art. I think this piece is pretty interesting as well. Much more interesting than another derivative stencil print that is supposed to be ironic or something.

Aye, I know what you mean now - some just see the brick. I haven't been keepin up with Turks stuff at all and love the 'polystyrene' cup with bitemarks. People use the word genius willynilly sometimes but I really think Turks been there for some time now.

He could quite easily have signed everybrick on a wall at the end of your street but the element of proving the value of authorship would have been be taken out of his hands as would the dialogue created by selling signed bricks.

I had to search through approximately 14,867,297 bricks at the London brick firing site in Peterborough to find this one, I beleive the burn marks on the side showing where the other bricks stood are unique to this particular piece, I couldn't find another exactly the same making this particularly special, in fact no two bricks were the same on the whole site!
I believe it tells it's own story, the love and care producing this solitary brick, one of billions that help build the foundation of our lives based upon shelter from rain to carbon burning, planet poisoning monstrosities.

I respect his perspective and find it fascinating. I'm not arguing with the price/value of this or other work of his, only saying that it really isn't art I would want to look at, day to day in my home. He's been compared/likened in this thread to Hirst and Emin - well there's plenty of Hirst's work that leaves me in awe of the man, his vision, execution and understanding/mastery of his market are exceptional, so I think that's a bit of a stretch. absolutely no problem at all with that, everyone has a right to like or dislike whatever they like but I think alot of what was said early in this thread came from not knowing who he was and just pouring scorn on an idea not understood.
Find out a little, understand the concept then says it's shit - it's a free world. The best art should provoke a reaction whether it's good or bad, at least it gets you talking.

Even Sensation artists, despite the variety and breadth of their thought provoking work, produce rubbish as well. It is OK not to like an artist's work even though they are a big name and rated. I just think this is very tired and exploitative. I need more in my art than just questioning what art is. absolutely no problem at all with that, everyone has a right to like or dislike whatever they like but I think alot of what was said early in this thread came from not knowing who he was and just pouring scorn on an idea not understood. Find out a little, understand the concept then says it's s**t - it's a free world. The best art should provoke a reaction whether it's good or bad, at least it gets you talking.

Maybe Auction Sab was just an obvious choice for a release like this. I guess the artist looks for the people that would most likely buy a piece like that and Auction Saboteur was at the center of that scene.
