THE MET LOTTERY, by Schrödinger's Chat on Sept 8, 2017 10:20:20 GMT 1, Thank you for this link MET, I really enjoyed it.
It was really interesting to revisit a point half my life ago, where I recall very clearly the hysteria and the funeral, but don't really recall hearing an alternate viewpoint.
One quick anecdote. I worked in ASDA at the time and we were allowed the morning off to watch the funeral (or use the time however we liked presumably). I worked on the rotisserie counter, and the chickens took an hour to cook. We arrived at work when the shop opened at 12, immediately put the chickens on to cook and within minutes we had a queue of people tutting and complaining that the chickens were not ready - I remember being really surprised at peoples response and thinking at the time, what has happened to people's empathy, and their appreciation that there are bigger issues in the world, and the realisation that life can end in a heartbeat etc. that I assumed they were showing about an hour previously. Now I realise they could just have been cynical anti-royalists who did not see why their lunch should be delayed by an hour because of this shit.
I had the same experience buying a newspaper the morning after 9/11, a longer queue than normal, people tutting and fussing and complaining because it was taking a few minutes longer to buy their milk, paper etc. I always wondered whether the looked at the front cover of the paper in their hand and thought - oh yeah, life could be worse or even life could be over, but nah, it didn't seem like it.
We are a funny bunch - humans.

To be fair, the focus on Trump and Ted Cruz by the media was encouraged by and performed in collision with the DNC and the Clinton campaign. It's all there in the john podesta emails released on wikileaks.
The purpose of the focused coverage on these two notably extremist candidates was meant to promote their nomination to candidancy and, accordingly, provide a weaker opponent against Clinton in the general election. The fact that this tactic horrifically backfired on the media, the DNC, and Clinton is their own fault.
Personally, I think it was a disgusting tactic and the media has nobody to blame but themselves.

Clinton supporters/surrogates and even some in the Bernie camp were pushing it as well - they figured he was an easy beat. Media also got a huge ratings boost, so to them it was a win-win(until it wasn't)

We are a funny bunch - humans. I'm pleased you enjoyed the programme.
Although I was never a fan of Diana Spencer, in life her popularity made her an effective figurehead for certain charities. For me as a republican, it seemed that she and her antics in later years also played a useful role in undermining the British monarchy.
Immediately following her death, however, that popularity morphed into an unsettling cult of personality. From news footage at the time, the images burnt in my memory were the hundreds (or thousands?) of bouquets and teddybears left by mourners outside Kensington Palace. Who bought all of those teddybears? It was a creepy, infantilised expression of grief for a 36-year-old woman most of these people had never met.
____________
Christopher Hitchens always did a great job putting forward counter-perspectives. His parting shot in this programme is amusing, when referring to the public's adulation of celebrity figures: Of course, we do have an alternative. It's summed up in the injunction, "Get a life."
As an intellectual exercise, in addition to arguing against myself, I spend a fair amount of time looking for weaknesses in the positions held by people I respect. But it's never been easy for me to find flaws in Hitchens' reasoning.
In case you haven't already seen it, you might appreciate Hell's Angel, the 1994 Channel 4 documentary presented by Hitchens regarding Mother Teresa, previously posted here. See as well his 1995 book, The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice.

THE MET LOTTERY, by met on Oct 5, 2017 6:43:36 GMT 1, How to make stress your friend | Kelly McGonigal (4 September 2013) [14:28] – uploaded by TED
Stress. It makes your heart pound, your breathing quicken and your forehead sweat. But while stress has been made into a public health enemy, new research suggests that stress may only be bad for you if you believe that to be the case. Psychologist Kelly McGonigal urges us to see stress as a positive, and introduces us to an unsung mechanism for stress reduction: reaching out to others.

This thread's original purpose was for a series of consecutive, video-based competitions held throughout March. Related questions were also posted by me. For each competition, the first person to answer the questions correctly was allocated specific numbers. On 1 April, one of those numbers was selected via lottery. ed turned out to be the holder of that number and earned himself a prize.
I continue posting occasional videos and podcasts here. Besides me finding them interesting, they serve as a reminder that I still have to organise the second half of the game (Part II) — something I've been procrastinating in doing for over six months now.
__________
It was a pleasure to hear your wife found the Kelly McGonigal talk helpful.
What fascinated me most was the influence of psychology on physiology. In this case, the mere belief that stress can be beneficial seems to have a positive effect on the bodies own response to stress.
Perhaps all this is linked to how meditation works. Or the placebo effect.
It brings to mind taste-test experiments where participants rate the quality of different wines. If people are led to believe they're consuming an expensive wine (including when the contrary is true), most will rate it highly. This psychological aspect is unsurprising. The influence that perceived price has on expectations of product quality is well-known to marketers. It's the reason why a decision to charge more for a consumer good can sometimes result in higher demand and increased sales.
But what's more interesting is how thinking you're drinking an expensive wine affects your neurological activity. The sensory properties of the wine stay the same, but the actual experienced pleasantness derived from its consumption is altered. Belief therefore goes beyond the psychological — it leads to physiological changes in people's brains.
In a similar manner, it's been shown that simply increasing the sale price for an energy drink can improve the ability of test participants to solve puzzles.
Fascinating stuff.

Body language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy argues that "power posing" -- standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don't feel confident -- can boost feelings of confidence, and might have an impact on our chances for success.

I have an open mind regarding Maajid Nawaz. I have watched and listened to quite a lot of what he has to say. Unsure of whose side he is really on regarding long term aspirations. So far I think he is progressive and even says himself that people from countries like Afghanistan who come to the UK do not share our cultural values.
Sarah Haider I know very little about. She is certainly on the money regarding the womens march and liberals attitude to sharia culture and the hijab etc. The hijab is anti feminism and anti womens rights and to me it looks like Urban art has been hijacked by white liberal virtue signalling by a few artists including Sheperd fairey who prmotes the hijab as a symbol of freedom of choice and also Stik who paints a stik figure in full burka. Which is sharia culture and anti liberty and definately anti gay rights. fairey to me comes across as an opportunist riding the white liberal virtue signalling bandwagon backing Clinton who is far from a feminist. Backing the womens march and Linda Sarsour who is a fraud a despicable women who is anti womens rights. Most have figured out her real agenda anyway. Stik I think is naive.
I tend to agree with the point made by Malcolm X regarding white liberals. It is just as relevant to todays politics.
Two women who are genuine feminists as opposed to Sarsour etc are Anni Cyrus and Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Brave and speak the truth.

Film the video with the song playing at double speed, and at a higher frame rate than normal. In post production, halve the speed of the video so that it appears in slow mo in comparison to the now normally playing audio?!?

THE MET LOTTERY, by met on Oct 27, 2017 22:27:23 GMT 1, Oh, hello met lottery thread again! let's give this a go... 1. Is it 'overcranking'? 2. Film the video with the song playing at double speed, and at a higher frame rate than normal. In post production, halve the speed of the video so that it appears in slow mo in comparison to the now normally playing audio?!?
I knew I could count on ed. Congratulations.
REFERENCE ANSWERS
1. The video itself is in slow motion. However, the band members are lip synching to the song lyrics at normal speed.
2.
(i) During the video shoot, the song would have been played back at an accelerated speed (perhaps x1.5), and the band members would have sung along or lip synched at that faster speed.
(ii) In post-production, the film was slowed down to the rate where the lip synching corresponded to the normal speed of the song — making the song look like it was being sung normally, while also creating a slow-motion effect elsewhere in the video.
[This technique appears to have been also used in the Portishead video for Only You, directed by the exceptionally talented Chris Cunningham. The latter happens to be married to Warpaint's Jennifer Lee Lindberg (in this video, with pink hair).]

Leave aside part B. The thematic link between those two magnificent songs is too obvious.
Instead, connect the dots with the three videos in part A, and also name those three specific dots.

In my head, this was an easy one, but the subject matter is clearly more esoteric than I thought. Let's keep the competition open for a full 24 hours, until 23:30 UK time today (Saturday).

Two more cookie competitions later today — Saturday, 28 October. Videos posted at around 20:30 UK time. Questions posted at 21:00 and 22:00.

THE MET LOTTERY, by met on Oct 28, 2017 13:48:54 GMT 1, The Met lottery is back! Thank you met for your wonderful message. It looks like I have quite a few pages to catch up on. Good to hear from you again, doyle. Your presence on this forum is even more sporadic than my own.
The lottery isn't back just yet. I still need to get my act together for Part II.

THE MET LOTTERY, by met on Oct 28, 2017 14:09:09 GMT 1, metI don't know the answer but I thoroughly enjoy it. The best song I have heard or seen in a while. Thanks! You're most welcome. As a belated warning about the bass level, playing the song at full volume on my laptop a few months ago resulted in my right-side speaker blowing out.
In case it's of interest, clicking the 'Settings' icon of that Warpaint video and changing the speed from 'Normal' to '1.5' gets you pretty close to natural speed (based on the skateboarding in the background and hair movement of the band members). This also allows you to hear the accelerated audio playback which the band will have sung along to during the shoot.
_________
Regarding answers to questions, people should have a go even if they're uncertain. ed didn't get the full answer himself, but his was good enough.
I have real admiration for those who are unafraid to fail. More often than not, the quest for perfection leads to misery, paralysis, and a reduced pace of improvement.
The anecdote I constantly try to remind myself of is the following, from the book Art & Fear: Observations On the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking by David Bayles and Ted Orland (available on Amazon UK here):

Despite the competition's minimum requirement of 91 posts, I'll exercise my discretion here and give you this one. For a few reasons:
(i) nobody else responded after more than 16 hours; (ii) I have a curious affinity towards people who know their supermodels; (iii) at one point I lived in Brixton by the Frontline, where the Dogstar was my local; and (iv) sometimes you've got to say "Fuck the rules" and just go for it. Which you very capably did.
Congratulations.
__________
Lily Cole has been in my good books (inadequate pun intended) ever since I learnt she became part owner of a bookshop with her friend Lucy Moore. Claire de Rouen Books was based on Charing Cross Road until that location sadly closed this summer. Apparently, the shop will reopen soon at 4 Herald Street, Bethnal Green, E2.
If there's one London area whose former incarnations are worth feeling nostalgic about, it's Charing Cross Road.
__________
As an aside regarding PJ Harvey, I've seen her about five or six times live, including at Tate Modern, Somerset House, in Stockholm, and at the Cambridge Corn Exchange with Tricky (and Martina Topley-Bird) opening. She always puts on a great show.
To the Harvey fans on this message board, you owe it to yourself to watch her 2001 concert at Big Day Out in Sydney if you haven't already done so. Rid of Me (at 0:36), performed alone with a guitar, still makes the hairs stand on the back of my neck. Man-Size at 4:30 is also very impressive. Play at high volume:
