THE MET LOTTERY, by met on Mar 26, 2019 1:00:40 GMT 1, always nice to hear a bit about the femmes met - they had a good early run. adverts ? they've all but past me by since the advent of a tivo - i'm still running an S1. still , here's a few from the past.. [...] As a teenager, one of the anticipated yearly events in my city was the International Advertising Festival (now called the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity).
It took place at our repertory theatre, the Towne Cinema, which otherwise played cult classics like Eraserhead, Quadrophenia and A Clockwork Orange. Friends and I always had a joyous time watching the best commercials each year from around the world.
Notwithstanding my fondness for Bill Hicks, if forced to choose between pedestrian art and clever advertising, I would opt for the more inspiring latter.
__________
All three of the ads below were produced by the agency Fallon London.
Sony Bravia - Balls (2005) Music: José Gonzales - Heartbeats - uploaded by 32cn32
Cadbury Dairy Milk - Office (2014) Music: Baccara - Yes Sir, I Can Boogie - uploaded by Wearefallon London
And here's the brilliant work that initiated Dairy Milk's brand-perception revolution in 2007. It even makes listening to Phil Collins bearable:
Cadbury Dairy Milk - Gorilla (2007) Music: Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight - uploaded by machinist
Some background on Gorilla, including commentary by Collins:

Surfer was indeed an exceptional ad by Guinness (a brand consistently strong in its campaigns).
Some younger members here might even be unfamiliar with the ad, directed by the talented Jonathan Glazer. He's the man behind many commercials — but also memorable music videos (e.g. Street Spirit (Fade Out) by Radiohead and Rabbit in Your Headlights by UNKLE) and a few films (including Sexy Beast).
One of the Better Out Than In pieces created by Banksy in October 2013 might also reference Surfer — the latter itself having been inspired by Walter Crane's painting, Neptune's Horses:
[All of this is another reminder of the need (or the duty) to know our history, whether in relation to geopolitics, art, or even just popular culture. The less informed we allow ourselves to be, the lower our capacity to understand the world around us.]

THE MET LOTTERY, by met on Jun 27, 2019 21:20:30 GMT 1, Come Fly With Me, created by and starring Matt Lucas and David Walliams, is a must for those who are very familiar with airports and low-cost travel in particular.
www.netflix.com/title/70229240 [May not be visible outside the United Kingdom.]
BBC programmes such as these are one reason I love living in the UK. It would be difficult to imagine characters like Precious Little, Omar Baba and Taaj Manzoor being aired on North American television.
Not sure if this is better suited in the What Music are you listening to at the moment ? thread, but I've had the Martin Clunes Song by Nanako and Asuka on repeat since early evening:
______________
Special mention also goes to an overly-confident Helen Marsh — the "I can do that" woman from The Catherine Tate Show.

Did you hear the Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre podcast with Matt Lucas recently? As well as being thoroughly entertaining, he made some interesting comments about the character in Come Fly With Me, and whether he would play such characters today.

Many thanks. Will watch this with interest one evening next week.
It's a topical issue that I find myself being increasingly militant about — largely in reaction to what feels like an atmosphere of hysteria and the excessive, backward focus on identity groups, sub-groups and sub-sub-groups.
[Most disconcerting for me as an individualist and socio-political centrist is the fact that such group allocations and labels now tend to come from many I would previously have deemed comrades. It's reached the point where the traditional, one-dimensional Left–Right spectrum has become little more than a source of confusion. A benefit of double-axis or three-axis models like the Nolan Chart or Vosem Cube is that they allow me to more easily distinguish, say, the liberal Left (my allies) from the illiberal Left (my adversaries).
The divisive phenomenon of identity politics has of course also become prevalent in other professions. There are ridiculous "lived experience"-style arguments being raised by some to justify, for example, why straight actors (repetition for emphasis: actors) shouldn't be allowed to play gay characters. Even in the art world, we've recently seen bigoted demonstrations about what subject matters artists can or cannot address in their work, depending on what group they're deemed to belong to (e.g. the 2017 controversy regarding Dana Schutz's painting, Open Casket). In my opinion, that isn't just a retarded mindset, it's socially regressive.]
__________
Coming back to the above Matt Lucas interview, I was previously unaware of its existence — and of the podcast itself — so cheers again for the video.

THE MET LOTTERY, by met on Jul 14, 2019 2:33:51 GMT 1, Winners of individual competitions get a cookie.
But some of the questions are also predictable for anyone paying attention to patterns. And aren't we all pattern-seeking creatures?
__________
In the unlikely event that one forum member wins all four competitions this Wednesday 17 July, there's a bonus for them besides well-earned glory:
- a trench coat of their choice from Aquascutum* or a pair of shoes of their choice from Church's*. [Maximum spend: £700.00.]
Both classic, both timeless. Even Marie Kondo would agree that, yes, such a bonus prize would spark joy.

THE MET LOTTERY, by met on Jul 17, 2019 20:00:00 GMT 1, Some 90s music. Londoners, Londonphiles and/or rapid researchers will have an advantage with this particular competition. The first member to answer correctly, wins.
Questions below relate to the videos in Part A.
1. The first video by Suede was shot in large part on a platform of a London Underground station. What is the name of the tube line corresponding to this station platform?
NB: The name of the tube line is required, not the tube station.
There is only one correct answer — so a reply along the lines of "It's either [x] or [y]" will not be accepted.
2.
2.1 The second video by The Lightning Seeds features a classic Routemaster double-decker bus. In which London location does the first set of passengers climb aboard?
Clue for non-Londoners: What's needed is the name of a world-famous "rounded open space where several streets converge".
2.2 At the road junction and public space referred to in question 2.1 also stands a memorial fountain topped by the winged statue of a Greek god. Name the god who is depicted. [With this question, members already familiar with London have the opportunity to properly test their knowledge.]
3. Besides (i) the London Underground and (ii) the Routemaster bus, there exists a third iconic London mode of transportation.
Name it, and explain precisely its connection to all three music videos in Part A.
If an eligible member doesn't respond correctly beforehand, answers will be posted in 48 hours — at around 20:00 UK time on Friday 19 July. No additional clues provided.

THE MET LOTTERY, by kjg on Jul 17, 2019 20:41:29 GMT 1, Hi met!
Thanks for this opportunity. I finally found the time again to join another of your riddles.
These are my answers:
1.The video was shot at a disused platform of the Piccadilly Line. 2.1. The passengers climb aboard the bus at Piccadilly Circus 2.2. The statue depictures the god of requited love: Anteros 3.The third iconic mode of transportation in London is the Hackney or black cab. The link between the three videoclips is the actress Keeley Hawes: she stars in all three videos and her dad was a black cab driver.

Excellent work, kjg. You win.
REFERENCE ANSWERS
1. Filming took place on a disused Piccadilly line platform at Hoborn station* (not on the Central line, which also services the station). The title of the Gomez song in Part B was a clue.
2.
2.1 Piccadilly Circus. The title of the Gomez song in Part B was a clue.
2.2 The statue by Sir Alfred Gilbert at the top of the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain is of Anteros*, the Greek god of requited love and avenger of unrequited love.
It is often mistaken for Eros, the Greek god of (sexual) love / passion and fertility (and brother of Anteros).
The fountain "was erected in 1892–1893 to commemorate the philanthropic works of Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, who was a famous Victorian politician and philanthropist, and his achievement in replacing child-labour with school education." Anteros was deemed a fitting subject, symbolising the selfless and philanthropic love that Shaftesbury had shown for the less fortunate.
3. The third iconic London mode of transportation is the London black cab. All three music videos feature Keeley Hawes, whose father and two brothers are black cab drivers — cabbying arguably being the family profession.

The example of Hawes (as with Honor Blackman and others) suggests that, at least in the UK, elocution lessons aren't always a waste of time.
If anyone needs convincing about how strong an actor Hawes is, I recommend that they watch Episode 1 of Season 2 of the BBC police television series, Line of Duty. Detective Inspector Lindsay Denton was quite a brilliant role.

And in case you start getting hooked on the programme, keep an eye out for Detective Chief Superintendent Patricia Carmichael, who makes her first appearance three-quarters into Episode 5 of Season 5 (at 43:51). Carmichael, played by Anna Maxwell Martin, is a sharp-minded, cold-eyed, softly-spoken attack dog — a character I find terribly attractive.

Hi met! Thanks for this opportunity. I finally found the time again to join another of your riddles. These are my answers: 1.The video was shot at a disused platform of the Piccadilly Line. You win. REFERENCE ANSWERS1. Filming took place on a disused Piccadilly line platform at Hoborn station * ( not on the Central line, which also services the station). THE MET LOTTERY, by met on Jul 17, 2019 20:59:59 GMT 1, Some 80s music. Blondie - Rapture (1981)- uploaded by BlondieMusicOfficialGrace Jones - I'm Not Perfect (1986)- uploaded by TelegenicsThe Cars - Hello Again (1984)- uploaded by TheCarsOfficial________________ At around 21:00 UK time on Wednesday 17 July, I'll quote this post and add one or more questions or instructions. The first member to answer correctly, wins.
The above videos have cameos by three famous contemporary visual artists who all died within a three-year period. They've been referred to by some as the "holy trinity".
But this isn't the only occasion one of them appeared in a music video for the same performer or band.
Name the visual artist as well as the performer / band being referred to here, and post the relevant music video.
If an eligible member doesn't respond correctly beforehand, answers will be posted in 48 hours — at around 21:00 UK time on Friday 19 July. No additional clues provided.

In my view, this is the weakest of the current batch of cookie competitions.
Connect the dots between the above three songs. Explain what they share in common.

Congratulations, avec art. You win. The first clip and official music video is what I was after.
REFERENCE ANSWER
Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol and Keith Haring feature in the three videos.
[Of particular note are the lip-syncing skills displayed by Warhol at 1:48 in the last clip (which he co-directed) — almost as impressive as Ric Ocasek's Adam's apple. Separately, any fans of Dianne Brill* on this forum? How about Gina Gershon?]
Basquait previously appeared at the beginning of the Blondie video for Atomic in 1979. His role might well have been credited as "space-cadet horse handler".
Blondie - Atomic (1979) - uploaded by Alternative Nation
Check out the dancing by Debbie Harry in her bin bag. Especially from 2:48 to 3:04 where, in quick succession, she confidently executes 'The Heel Stuck in Grate', 'The Zombie in a Straightjacket' and 'The Malfunctioning Robot'.
It would have taken hours of practice to make those moves look so effortless. Contrast this with the chap next to her wearing the helmet and overalls. He only manages to do a dance called 'The Seizure' — and not very well either.
See too a young Angelina Jolie (an early fan of Blondie) in the pink trousers. Aficionados will note she's performing a choreography still popular today, called 'The Dancefloor Irritant' (sometimes also known as 'The Nutjob'). This was prior to Jolie becoming addicted to heroin and later dying of AIDS-related complications in 1986.

I was looking for an official music video, rather than a film extract.

THE MET LOTTERY, by kjg on Jul 17, 2019 22:28:20 GMT 1, The answer to the last question is: Jonas Akerlund.
He directed all three official music videos to Pay For Me by Whale, The Everlasting Gaze by The Smashing Pumpkins and The Prodigy's Smack My Bitch Up.
Very funny to read that he is in the Swedish metalband Bathory. That band exists for over 20 years but- despite being very important for the black metal scene - never ever gave a live gig :-)
