Firefly and the film sequel Serenity (also by Joss Whedon) are also excellent.
Dollhouse (again by Whedon) I also found engaging, especially after recently watching Westworld. Both series raise questions about what it means to be human.

totally different than other tv series. It's not a real serie as the episodes are not linked to each other - it's more like a set of different short stories. Very disturbing sometimes but brilliantly produced.

Kinda like a cross between Dead Man Walking and Forrest Gump, it's a thoughtful (my wife says depressing) family drama based in the American South. Great writing, excellent acting.

My favourite of all times. Indeed Boardwalk Empire is great too.
And The Wire also, although that went rather odd in the end. First 3 were excellent.
Haven't seen House of Cards mentioned yet, or did I miss that. Really good !!
One series I enjoyed was Lillehammer, basicly Sil (Steve van Zandt) from Sopranos that ends up in Norway in witness protection. Really funny.

Girls ....Lena Dunham ....it's not just for girls

It's been mentioned a few times on the list, but I think it's the best tv series out there. Incredibly well thought out, produced and acted. There are only 3 episodes a season but each is an hour and a half.  enjoy it
