Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel ★★★, by laurentbaboo on Mar 27, 2017 14:35:35 GMT 1, I have tried not to reply to your negative posts recently. But...."disappointment by most...."?! It seems to me that the disappointment is coming from a very limited number of critics. It was suggested a while ago that yiu start your own separate thread to contain your moans and groans about how this project just isn't good enough for you. I think that's a great idea. You are only seeing the negative. Oh I did start my own thread with my thoughts! Go join on that one haha
You did indeed! But no much interest or followers for some reason!

Despite there being "disappointment by most". How odd. It seems to me that only a small minority are disappointed.

Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel ★★★, by Scraffer on Mar 27, 2017 15:02:39 GMT 1, To put the prices into perspective for people who are vaguely considering it... I paid £240 for my return easyJet flight. I then paid £12 for a shared taxi from the airport to Jerusalem and £1.50 for the bus from Jerusalem to Bethlehem. I booked into the $30 room for 2 nights (before it was announced that this price bracket was for low income travellers, but that's by-the-by). I've actually stayed on in the country, travelling up to Ramallah, Jericho and Jerusalem, before I head home on Thursday. The hostels I'm staying at for the rest of my trip are all £12 a night, and very nice. This will most likely be my 'summer holiday' for the year. Just to clarify a couple of things, the West Bank is not the same as Gaza, and the situations are very very different. Gaza is impossible for tourists to visit, full stop. The West Bank on the other hand is wide open for people to travel around. Yes, you have to put up with the checkpoints and roadblocks, but that aside, the local people are the most welcoming I've ever come across, and that is no exaggeration. Everyone from taxi drivers down to the random strangers on the street just want to greet you and say 'welcome to Palestine'. There are some cracking tourist sites, including some you might not expect. I spent today doing a tour of the Taybeh brewery and winemakers (highly reccomended), and tomorrow I'll be trekking to the monestary at Wadi Qelt. I'm travelling on my own and feel very safe.
I do understand that for some people a trip like this just isn't affordable, and I know I'm incredibly fortunate to be able to take a week off work to do it, but it's just worth pointing out that one could easily do a three day trip here for the price of a couple of POW-level prints.
Having said that, the situation here is constantly in flux, and it is undeniably a gamble coming to somewhere where violent protests and roadblocks can commence at the drop of a hat. I wouldn't have travelled here if the Foreign Office didn't deem it safe to do so, and as I type this, they do. That may well change tomorrow or the next day, so don't come expecting an easy ride. If you're happy to take a chance and are fortunate enough to have some money spare to do so, you'll have an eye-opening and unforgettable experience...

Haha Yeah who would have thought people would be afraid to discuss art. Better to stay away from anything that could remotely be seen as a criticism towards the work of banksy!

It feels like this has been discussed over and over, so how about letting the hotel continue for a while before any more comment about it's success, or lack of? It's been open just a week or 2. It will be there all year... Let's see what happens, then discuss whether it worked or not.

Well all I see is you speaking negatively about my opinions bringing nothing else to the conversation. Feel free to change that and we'd all benefit in sure.

I agree and I've said the same.
However I still think it's fine to discuss it early on as well. I think it's valid to discuss a work at its concept, inception, during its peak and when it's 'done'.

You seem to be doing a lot of speculating, and focusing on any negatives you can find, and that's fine, but there's not much to really discuss yet.

You have asked questions, often the same questions again and again and again and again and again and they have been answered over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
Its all fine, and its clear you get a kick out of winding people up, which again if fine if thats what makes you tick
Enjoy
However, saying you have brought anything to this conversation is over stepping the mark ever so slightly

Maybe the issue is not with the forum members who don't want to discuss your opinion ?
Maybe, hypothetically, the issue is with the poster who restate his one-line opinion over and over and over...
Honestly mate, it is extremely tiring. Like being trapped at a party where they only play one song that no one happens to like.
You are underwhelmed. We get it. End of

Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel ★★★, by Deleted on Mar 27, 2017 16:08:01 GMT 1, Yes, they are. Palestinians get free entry to the museum, and as a result lots of locals are visiting it. Almost every taxi driver I had had been to check it out, and I even met a local at my hotel in Jerusalem who'd made the trip down twice already to see it. People here love Banksy, and everyone knows about him. Banksy tourism is a BIG thing and many gift stores sell as many Banksy products as they do religious ones! That's good to hear Yeah, it's great if the locals enjoy it and see it as having a positive impact on the area. But I can also understand the disappointment from the majority of people who can't really justify the budget of a trip there to visit the hotel. Apart from the locals, it really is something that only the well off can afford to go to and experience, but I guess those are also the level of customers Banksy is now selling most of his work to, rather than the masses such as with the Dismaland, Cans Tunnel event or Bristol Museum.
I think its a big world, and he has a big audience. when i was there I introduced a couple of Palestinians i had met to his work and showed them around the museum, it was interesting to hear them talk about how true to their life it was, even down to the house keys that the families still have when they were forced and gun point to leave their family home.
I also noticed in the short time i was their that a few Tourists seemed to find their way to the hotel, no idea how? i think they followed the wall around and then saw a monkey outside a door and found themselves inside having lunch and being introduced to a rather surreal experience.
Also, $30 a night including breakfast really isn't to much for a bed
I havent checked easy jet flight costs? but i don't think they are really that high if you plan ahead?
ETA
I just looked on easy jet and you can get a return flight in June for around the £160 mark, so plus a couple of nights in the hotel @ $30, if you did it right you could possibly visit all in for say £300-£400

Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel ★★★, by Lroy on Mar 27, 2017 16:28:12 GMT 1, It is funny, it reminds me an English comment in a reportage about a " great exhibition but in the wrong place " - or a thing like that.
The wrong place was Paris. Not so far from London, just the channel to cross, not the red sea to open.
Well, I begin to believe that Brexit or not Brexit, some people are a bit self-absorbed and think that rock, punk, trip-hop, football and street-art and Banksy ( No golf ? ) should be " played " at home ( understand UK first, maybe Europe or Us in short the West - sorry I don't want to make any humilation and I don't attack anybody ) and not elsewhere.. We can read this about the Walled off Hotel in some comments here : " why in Palestine ?! " , " I won't or I can't go " , " bring back our tees, postcards etc.. " and they look - as me - desperatly if shop will sell tees or not...
It's true that London is London, NY/NY, Paris/Paris, and some comments should be a reflex of citizens living in a capital ( they can't even imagine to go in the countryside one day - a lot of snobish Parisians are allergics to the cows, grass, trees, etc.. apart in Deauville, in the South of France, Monaco and its blue seaside, etc... But... It si true also ( that's why I am on your forum, brought by the passion of Banksy, that I have known at a later stage, via Exit Through the Gift Shop ) that UK people are legends, and they have created all what I like, rock , street-art, etc etc...
I wont debate here again about xenophobia ( and the comment was surely a joke ) and some conditionned reflex that we could call " chauvinism " - nationalism being a disgusting word.
Banksy has made that in Palestine, it is not whithout reasons, and his Art Hotel is awesome. He took risks ( not only because of the situation between Palestin/Israël , and he has balls to have done that. More than a challenge, it is a chance and a change.
Anyway...
If you can't go, stay home ( great quote innit ? ) ...
... We still can wait in front of the web shop - you know the one with the keyboard and all this boring European time to kill, for any tee to be worn as a cotton flag without any medal nor decoration...

Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel ★★★, by Cornish Crayon on Mar 27, 2017 18:03:21 GMT 1, @danielsilk Could you please define "well off" ? Thank you Some people can't afford to go abroad, traveling, holidaying in another country, some can afford to holiday abroad maybe once a year or every few years if they are lucky. To visit the Walled Off Hotel isn't what you would call a holiday not exactly a place to take your children for a fun or relaxing break, so you would need to be pretty well off to be able to justify jumping on a plane to Palestine. If you don't agree, it's ok we just come from different backgrounds and live surrounded by different people.
I don't agree and yes I'm ok, I think what you define as well off and what i define as well off are somewhat worlds apart, Yes i have booked and am looking at going to the walled off hotel, do i class myself as well off........ no.
To me, well off is when you technically don't have to worry about money, i don't worry about money but i am very careful with it.
I don't keep up with the jones, i don't burn money on lavish items like branded clothes or handbags, gold or cars, i could have credit cards but i don't, i spend only money i have earnt, apart from our mortgage we are debt free, never buy on the never never, and eat sensibly and well. I always buy sale items whenever possible, if i can't i often leave it.
If we want to go to Palestine, i look at what the costs are and evaluate if its possible, yes it is going to cost money and i might need to watch things for a couple of weeks, not buying spontaneous bits, like not eating out (once every couple of weeks if we fancy it, sometimes not) the savings might get touched just for spending money but its a great experience and opportunity we would like to participate in.
We don't spend for the sake of spending.
Im not going to reveal our household income, but i can tell you this, i don't earn anywhere near some of the figures banded around on this forum, well below average household income.
can i ask you @danielsilk , do you think I'm well off ?
@danielsilk Could you please define "well off" ? Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel ★★★, by highflyer on Mar 27, 2017 19:12:32 GMT 1, As Karl Pilkington would say, "I found that being with happy positive people ....really really reaaaallllyyy annoys me. ...
so, I just sort of go along and say whatever I think - and that's all you can do in life, innit?"
Would say or did say?

Do you think the people in Palestine think the foreigners visiting the Banksy Hotel are well off? How you judge "Well of" most likely depends on your own background and were you live. Many where I live don't have electricity, water supply, and their children roam the streets begging for food, and a really good wage is about £3 per day, so you and I would be classed as Rich. By forum standards we might be poor but world standards we are certainly well off or even rich!

By forum standards we might be poor but world standards we are certainly well off or even rich! That is true. There are richs who are richs, and poors who are poors... I don't know any rich poor or poor rich ( unless he has won on betting , ahaha )..
Definition of rich is easy : to don't have some day to palpate your pockets or to return your cupboard to search an euro for the baguette, to live in a social location ( anyway I know some richs benefiting from the system ) , to have never took a plane, to don't have a car or driving licence, to only know the France or the close countries, to don't take holidays, etc etc... Definition of poor is easy too : to bet or not to bet. If you have money to bet, you are rich, if you have no money to bet, you are really poor and there is not hope.
Everybody here should go one time in a racecourse : there the lords talk to the " beggars " and vice versa. There is no jealousy, for the winners, as for the loosers. Money has no importance, reread Bukowski ( rip ) . and fuck the hyppocrit chips !
My conclusion is : you don't have to be hung-up to be rich, nor to be poor. you, we, are all welcome on this earth ! sorry for my idiot french
