Brexit, by Dive Jedi on Mar 11, 2019 12:02:56 GMT 1, It's a way of buying a knighthood. I checked out reviews of his vacs and products and most say they are crap. Expensive crap at that. 1. Contrary to the rumours, you can't 'buy' a knighthood although the general population love to think you can. But even if you could, you don't buy a knighthood by donating money to an art charity. 2. I find it hard to see how one becomes a millionaire by producing a product that everybody thinks is crap. How would that work exactly? 1. Rather odd to state you can no buy a nighthood, but if you could it wouldn't be a certain way...
2. Ever heard of the Tobacco industry ?

Brexit, by Chris JL on Mar 11, 2019 22:15:15 GMT 1, 5 million minus tax rebate is still a lot of money to give away. It's a way of buying a knighthood. I checked out reviews of his vacs and products and most say they are crap. Expensive crap at that.
Buying a knighthood? Recently I came across Doris Lessing’s response to a peerage offer, and I could not agree more :-)
24th November, 1992
Dear Alex Allan,
I am sorry I did not reply earlier, but I was in the States.
Thank you for offering me this honour: I am very pleased. But for some time now I have been wondering, "But where is this British Empire?" Surely, there isn't one. And now I see that I am not the only one saying the same.
There is something ruritannical about honours given in the name of a non-existent Empire.
And there is another thing. When young I did my best to undo that bit of the British Empire I found myself in: that is, old Southern Rhodesia.
And surely there is something unlikeable about a person, when old, accepting honours from a institution she attacked when young?
And yet...how pleasant to be a dame! I would adore it. Dame of what?
Dame of Britain? Dame of the British Islands? Dame of the British Commonwealth? Dame of ....? Never mind.
Please forgive my churlishness. I am sorry, I really am.
Yours sincerely,
Doris Lessing

So the Mr X invested in a foreign country and did a lot of charity work there...and later got rewarded with a knighthood. I don't see that as "buying a knighthood". I see that as being rewarded for doing good in this world. But I guess these things are open to interpretation. It's also interesting to note that it only applies to that particular foreign country, not the UK.

Lots of people who are not rich do charity work and are ignored.
Most people try to do good in this world. Whats so special about a rich person donating a million?

Brexit, by Deleted on Mar 12, 2019 15:17:52 GMT 1, I'm no fan of Jacob Rees-Mogg but I think this is a rather silly set of accusations. All people of his background will have substantial funds in stocks and shares, whether they are Brexiteers, Remainers or those demanding a second referendum. It's also true that many companies, including those part-owned by remainers, will benefit from the financial instability resulting from the Brexit negotiations. If people think Rees-Mogg is campaigning for Brexit because he will make some cash from it, then I think they are barking up the wrong tree.

He's not specifically campaigning because of the finacial gain, but it is certainly helping.
The man is from another era, part of the establishment which are in it for themselves. They always have done, and always will. Don't kid yourself.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if he does, in fact, have stocks and shares that are losing him money over Brexit. That's the nature of investments. You win some; you lose some. I am in the same boat - except I have a few hundred in stocks and shares rather than a few million. Some are doing quite well and some are doing badly.

Brexit, by Deleted on Mar 13, 2019 13:02:51 GMT 1, So...
Theresa May's deal has been rejected. No doubt the "leave without a deal" vote will also be rejected. That leaves an extension to Article 50, which will probably pass.
So we can expect the next 6 months being exactly the same as the last 6 months. Oh joy.

Brexit, by We Are The Walls on Mar 14, 2019 13:13:22 GMT 1, One lady told me that she voted to leave the EU, because she didn't think it would happen. These are honestly the types of people that shouldn't vote... but then neither should those contestants in the Love island contest (that love posted), at least until 'life' pops the bubble that they're living inside. It's interesting that a lot of London cabbies voted to leave (unless they have children who convinced them otherwise); because leaving would surely affect their trade. Some of the cabbies told me that they voted to leave as a way for them to put their middle finger up at the establishment, not because they dislike Europe. All quite pointless really and it's short sighted.
We need more vocal people and artists doing clever or daring Brexit-themed pieces to help enlighten the masses.
Is Brexit worth it if Ireland and Scotland declare independence? It will be a shame to lose the Union Jack, because it's a nice looking flag

All quite pointless really and it's short sighted. Yes, rationally speaking , punching your nose to spite your face is pointless and short sighted.
But these voters don't care about rational and long term
If the elite / establishment has been punching you in the face for the last 30 odd years (and for many in this country that's daily life), then you don't really care about taking an extra punch...
Because at least this time you took the punch but gave the establishment of piece of your mind...your vote counted.
Explains a lot of "unrational" voting by people globally who know that in the end they will be worse off...but when everything has been taken from you already, who the f**k cares
People linking austerity to Brexit (but also to similar sentiment in France, Italy, Spain etc...) are absolutely spot on

But these voters don't care about rational and long term If the elite / establishment has been punching you in the face for the last 30 odd years (and for many in this country that's daily life), then you don't really care about taking an extra punch... Because at least this time you took the punch but gave the establishment of piece of your mind...your vote counted. Explains a lot of "unrational" voting by people globally who know that in the end they will be worse off...but when everything has been taken from you already, who the f**k cares People linking austerity to Brexit (but also to similar sentiment in France, Italy, Spain etc...) are absolutely spot on

Brexit, by love on Mar 14, 2019 15:19:37 GMT 1, EU on no-deal Brexit motion: 'like Titanic voting for iceberg to move' That‘s a proper comparison.
But I have to admit, after three days watching the House of Commons, i‘m really impressed by the way this parliament works. I love it, that everyone can take part in a democratic discussion. It‘s way more boring in the German parliament.
