Brexit, by dogstar on Jul 30, 2019 12:21:59 GMT 1, 17 council areas in Wales voted to leave and 5 to remain. Wales got quite a bit of money from the EU if i remember on a news story when the fiasco started! But obviously the people of Wales never knew that. Maybe people in Wales feel industry there has been hit worst by unfair competition from the rest of Europe, and thats probably why the EU has been giving funds there to try and easy the unemployment caused.
Are Welsh farmers energised by the prospect of 40% tariffs on lamb exported to the EU?
Helen Roberts from the National Sheep Association in Wales said it would be “absolutely catastrophic” to leave with no deal.
In a no-deal scenario, the 37,000 Welsh lamb and sheep carcasses a week that are usually sent to Europe would be stopped overnight under strict EU import rules that require de facto licensing for all farm exports.
Last week research commissioned by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board and Quality Meat Scotland found that combined beef and sheep meat exports to the EU could decline by 92.5%, with the Welsh lamb export trade “almost completely wiped out”.

There were interviews on the Today programme about this today. The welsh farmers export 97% of their sheep/lamb meet to Europe. The minister’s only response was that there will be new markets. It was pointed out that there won’t be sufficient new markets by 31 October! The farmers have indicated that there will be civil unrest (or it might have been disobedience- I can’t remember which).

Suggesting that replacing the exisiting market with new ones is a pathetic answer.
Firstly, it assumes that there will be sufficient capacity in the new markets for additional suppliers. I would have thought that if there was, suppliers would already be exploiting it.
Secondly, suppliers shouldn't have to be put to the trouble of finding new markets. They've done that part once already! It's like taking away someone's job and saying "don't worry, there will be other jobs out there some day".
The minister would have been better off just saying that it's a regretable consequence of Brexit and that the UK Government are simply following the mandate given to them by the people of Wales.

I agree. It was pointed out to the minister that it was clear that he was following instructions to be positive and optimistic (I can’t recall the exact word used, but that was the gist).

The fact is that a no deal scenario immediately crashes us out of the newly set up EU/Japan FTA! I've read that the Japanese are moving all of their business interests out of the UK purely on the grounds of how rude and unprofessional the current government are...we've 'lost face' in their eyes and I tend to agree with them.

Irrelevant. Japan imposes 0% on lamb across the board. Probably because they hardly eat the stuff, but still..

Brexit, by mojo on Jul 30, 2019 18:13:29 GMT 1, Did anyone see how humiliated Corbyn looked when Boris was giving him it both barrels in parliament today ? No because I refuse to log on to a link from The Sun's website to watch it, however I did see Dominic Raab making a total arse of himself when asked for simple examples to back up the bullshit he was spewing on the news yesterday evening, obviously he was unable to since this whole no deal Brexit is not just a complete far right fantasy it's an absolute economic disaster and smells like unicorns**t. You see the majority of TV journalists & press (not including the sun, daily mail or telegraph) are now more than ever, going to demand answers and not just pie in the sky answers, real answers backed up by examples and proof and when a reasonable answer isn't forthcoming they will publicly shame them until they can legitimately provide an answer.
I did see the Johnsons visit to Scotland yesterday on the news ...oh dear that didn't go well did it? Even the far right press couldn't edit out/cover up how loud the boo's & hisses were and how hated he is there. Imagine how loud those boo's and hisses would be if the rest of the UK joined in to express how completely unethical it is to allow a practically unelected (92,000) ex failed Mayor & Foreign minister to take us out of the EU on a very ill advised advisory referendum? I'm sure Ireland alone would break the sound barrier.
*edit just watching the news and the visit to Wales has gone the same way too.

Brexit, by Bill Hicks on Jul 30, 2019 18:41:45 GMT 1, Labour makes people poor, Labour voters become reliant on handouts, Labour promises more handouts, Labour runs out of money, Labour loses election, Labour blames conservatives for making people poor... Labour wins election... ...Repeat. The Unison Cymru Wales analysis found that since 2010 there have been cuts to 28,100 council jobs, 10 per cent of the Welsh workforce, in the country.
Key findings in the audit were that more than 500 jobs have gone in 19 of the 22 councils in Wales.
Women were found to be more adversely affected than men, with women losing 18,400 of the cut jobs.
The union argued that if the 27,500 workers employed by Wales’s biggest private employers were to go, there would be government intervention.
“Yet,” Unison Cymru Wales head of local government Bethan Thomas said, “the Conservative government is completely indifferent to the same number of public service job losses it has caused in Wales by starving Welsh government and Welsh councils of money.
“Stripping funds available to councils means we have lost an army of librarians; youth workers; school support staff; leisure centre staff; carers; highways maintenance workers; social workers; environmental health inspectors and more. Council services are disappearing before our eyes.
“We are at crisis point.
Labour makes people poor, Labour voters become reliant on handouts, Labour promises more handouts, Labour runs out of money, Labour loses election, Labour blames conservatives for making people poor...

Those in the party are the bastard sons and daughters of Thatcher, continuing her work. At their heart lies the absolute belief in the free market with no state involvement. By dismantling the role of the state they expect the market will pick up the pieces. And if it doesn't....who cares.
They'll get their come-uppance.
The last hurrah of the ruling elite.

Brexit, by wardance on Jul 30, 2019 19:47:27 GMT 1, With article 50 starting before the end of this month, how long do you think the process will take? I feel it's gonna be much faster then the set two years. I would say less than a year, and I wonder if even within 6 month is possible. What do you think? Never fails to get a laugh.
