A post-Brexit shortage of lorry drivers - estimated to be around 100,000 - as the COVID-19 pandemic eases has sown chaos through British supply chains in everything from food to fuel has raised the spectre of disruptions and price rises in the run-up to Christmas.

The British government on Sunday announced a plan to issue temporary visas for 5,000 foreign truck drivers as a response to the acute shortfall of truck drivers that made gas station pumps run dry in cities across the country. The visas will expire on Dec. 24.

Pajka, who quit his job in Britain as it was leaving the European Union, said three months just wasn't long enough for it to be worthwhile.

I listened to a radio 4 interview with a polish hgv driver, who was understandably furious at the idea of a temporary visa. Words the the effect that he felt he was told he was not welcome, then is asked back for a few months to help, then will he told he’s not welcome again. He compared it to dogs not being just for Christmas.
I had sympathy with him.

It's all very desperate. This off the back of Boris begging for a US trade deal and begging for Amazon to pay more tax. It is just another example of Government running the services down to run on the bare minimum. Since we've had the same shitty Government for over a decade it gets harder to blame 'successive governments' and Labour for what we are left with.

All these sectors were supposed to increase with job uptakes.
All these industries took advantage of being in Europe and paid low wages, starting to see in trucking sector of increasing wages to attract employees, this will slowly spread to other sectors.
The police is another sector which is going to take a hit as they were already struggling with numbers with the latest incidents internally a lot of potential recruits will be put off joining
