Has Banksy forgotten about your average Joe?, by Masong on Apr 11, 2017 19:13:38 GMT 1, This is my first thread so thought I'd go straight in and be possibly a bit controversial. I'm your average Joe on a reasonable wage who loves the urban art scene which was brought to my attention by Banksy about 10 years back. Now I would love to own a signed Banksy print but even if I had a spare £12k + spare I just couldn't do it. I could get some serious original for that kind of cash. I know all you investors will be saying ' yeh but it'll be worth X amount next year you can't go wrong. That's what I think the problem is, I'm being pushed out of the market because of the money when I'm the one who would just want the print to put it on the wall because I love the image ( I also know some investors are collectors before you say it) I know we all want to know that we haven't lost money on the art we buy but some of my favourite pieces are the ones I probably couldn't get my money back on.
This leads me to my question. If Banksy is really from the street and is your normal guy done good, why doesn't he realease a completely new timed 24hr release signed print ( i know some of you will say 'Signed but he'll have to do about 50,000+) I think signing your name for a few weeks is no biggy) then all fans could own a piece of his art without having to be in the privileged position of being able to spend 1000's on a piece of paper.
All comments welcome especially the negative. I don't get offended so you can rip me to pieces about anything including my grammar. My 9 year boy checked it and he was happy.😄

Has Banksy forgotten about your average Joe?, by iamzero on Apr 11, 2017 19:20:27 GMT 1, I reckon Eine nailed it in the video posted on here about people flipping prints and stuff being sat in folders. Why release a print for £500 for speculators to keep it in plastic for a while and sell on for £20k? Even if you were a huge Banksy fan and managed to get one how could you turn down that profit... might not be a life changing amount to some but it is for others.

I went to Dismaland and loved it but even then people were selling their balloons for £50+ on the bay. I paid a fiver for it and kept it as a reminder even though I could of made a quick profit. Oh and I could of bought more than one but didn't. I'm not a rich man but still thought it better not to be greedy. Maybe that's where I'm going wrong 😂

That's exactly what I did with a Pulp Fiction but then you feel like your cheating on the artist, you can't win🙄

Has Banksy forgotten about your average Joe?, by Jaylove on Apr 11, 2017 19:43:01 GMT 1, Honestly, it's the way of the world. The decreasing middle class everywhere is forcing people to find other ways to make money. I honestly don't know how things could be fair. If he released a bunch of cheap prints, it spits in the face of those fans who already have his pieces and likely purhcased at a much higher price.
Flipping is not going anywhere. It's happening in real estate, clothing, shoes, electronics, etc. It's not going anywhere.
Sometimes you have to accept that some things just simply aren't for average joe's. I'd love a Range Rover, but that's not likely happening for me and I'm cool with it.

Has Banksy forgotten about your average Joe?, by Poster Bob on Apr 11, 2017 19:43:11 GMT 1, For what it's worth Banksy clearly does not give a shit if people reproduce his work. If he did you would not see such a massive market for reproductions like you do. You shouldn't feel guilty for enjoying art on your wall.

Has Banksy forgotten about your average Joe?, by A.R.T. on Apr 11, 2017 20:02:01 GMT 1, Yes the common person has been priced out of Banksy's work, but that is what happens when an artists brand and recognition grows.
Let me aks the OP this, why didnt you buy something 10 years ago if you've been a fan that long?

Here's the flaw with this thinking.
Release to rich VIPs - make truck loads of cash but also put on some 'public' stuff here and there - still have truck loads of cash.
Banksy now double dips and it seems his fans eat it up and buy it and come to his defense.
It's the opposite of what made banksy banksy and opposite of what he critiqued so much.
The control over prints and the changing of hands of prints is bizarre.
Bella Gladman may be right that his work is "ludicrous pompousness."

I did try!! The first print I tried for was Trolleys. I believe it was £500 on release but of course could be wrong. Can't remember if it was F5ing or lottery, lottery I think.. I then remeber going onto eBay and seeing them go for £1200 and thinking, £500 was a lot let alone that 😂

I agree. I bought my first Banksy, Trolleys, for $900. It was the most I had paid for a non OG at the time. I was able to pick up a second one, Morons, before price explosion a couple of years ago. I glad I made the leap as I would never be able to purchase a Banksy at today's prices.

NYC... dismaland... walked off are not accessible for most people.
However prints, books, posters, etc. are.
Woohoo banksy posts photos of his work everyone. Praise him for given art to the masses!

Banksy owes nobody anything. Average joe nor well off investor. It's all just become a business, which is great, if you own it.

Has Banksy forgotten about your average Joe?, by Deleted on Apr 11, 2017 21:18:19 GMT 1, The paper is fine but the images are pretty far off unfortunately. I have a few myself that I bought for comparison. They are what they are..just one of the many way's you can own a Banksy-like image. I'm just saying you can print on the same quality paper with an image quality that is closer to the original prints.
The paper is fine but the images are pretty far off unfortunately. I have a few myself that I bought for comparison. They are what they are..just one of the many way's you can own a Banksy-like image. I'm just saying you can print on the same quality paper with an image quality that is closer to the original prints.

Has Banksy forgotten about your average Joe?, by vulva on Apr 11, 2017 21:23:34 GMT 1, Honestly if you get his punch lines and commentary, and support him as an artist for that, w h y would you like to own that piece of s **t? Don't get it. I like Banksy and therefore I couldn't motivate myself to spend a fortune on a mock on myself. not even a Mary? hmmm
Don't be silly, of course I couldn't motivate myself to buy a piece of paper to put on the wall when I barely have a wall to hang it on. That amount of money is my whole years income.

Can you post don't comparison photos? I always see people saying they are way off but never seen an actual comparison.

Has Banksy forgotten about your average Joe?, by FЯ on Apr 11, 2017 22:08:54 GMT 1, He gives something for average joes most years to enjoy... dismaland, walled off, movie, new york street show, bar & grill etc.
The problem was the 'average joes' were tossers in queues, greedy, gangs and probably worse. so thats why he just sells things to above average joes now.
