Has Banksy forgotten about your average Joe?, by Rouen Cathedral on Apr 13, 2017 0:57:05 GMT 1, what a strange discussion, Banksy is far better for the average joe than just about any artist i can imagine. He openly gives away his imagery for FREE and has steadfastly refused to peruse infringement claims against the huge numbers of outlets producing high quality works using his imagery. Now that is street. you could buy this sweet flower bomber pillow: shop.bbcicecream.com/products/banksy-flower-bomber-cushionor this sweet monkey pillow that just reeks of average joe shop.bbcicecream.com/products/plush-monkey-signhas banksy forgotten about the middle income collectors hoping to make a profit on the sale of his signed works, the answer is yes. He is selling his editioned work to high income collectors at full market or above market price.
I understand this when it comes to the WCP prints. Which is interesting that he doesn't shit that down...
However a throw pillow? I can go get a Monet throw pillow too. I could print a picture of anything in the world and basically do whatever I want with it. Not sure saying banksy allowing this (minus WCP) is a huge win and gold star on how great he is.

Has Banksy forgotten about your average Joe?, by barryh on Apr 13, 2017 8:37:54 GMT 1, I don't understand the self entitlement being shown here. Banksy makes Art, not lungs or cancer cures... the thirst for making profit from someone else's skills are blatant. Just remember, it's greed that put an end to all of this when adults were fighting in the streets and moaning like children about things being 'fair'. I can assure you (not sure reassure is the correct term) that there are similar profit making vested interests in medicine and 'cancer cures' probably more so than in the art scene!
Yer obviously, but that doesnt mean it makes it ok for people to bang on like children that cant have a toy they want

Has Banksy forgotten about your average Joe?, by Rouen Cathedral on Apr 13, 2017 11:38:12 GMT 1, It is interesting that if someone ever says anything slightly assumed to be negative or a critique of banksy the response is always,
"They must be jealous they don't have a print"
Or
"They can't get what they want"

Learn to count. How many new pieces, available to view for very cheap or free are included within all these?

Has Banksy forgotten about your average Joe?, by Dr Plip on Apr 13, 2017 12:14:42 GMT 1, Why does Banksy get so much stick for making a healthy living out of his art? Or he gets criticised for not pricing his merchandise for all pockets?
Is it because he has this "worked his way up from the streets (then along to the next street)" kind of image or background? Or is it because his early (more reasonably priced) releases skyrocketed in worth, but people can't forget the prices of yesteryear?
I mean, all financially successful artists started out as jobbing artists at some point, flogging their wares for the maximum they could get away with.
I just don't understand why people are longing for him to still be running around London, spraying monkey stencils in the dead of night, while flogging ยฃ150 canvases on his bigcartel in the daytime.
He did something. Got better at it. Did some other things. Can do what he wants.
To quote Star Wars, "This bickering is pointless"
and to quote Babylon 5, "The avalanche has already started; It is too late for the pebbles to vote"
I just like those quotes.
Anyway, I know this is a forum, but it's really tragic to be wasting both time and pixels lamenting (great word useage there James) Banksy's lack of consideration for the "average Joe" or the "real fans" that have been "around from the beginning".
This is a forum, and it's good to share opinions amongst likeminded people, especially when people in the real world don't want to hear those opinions, but at some point, it gets a bit like we're banging on about the same whiney nonsense over and over again.
There's crap out there for all pockets. And if you can't afford that crap, then look at pictures online. If you can't afford to go online, then next time you see some Banksy images somewhere, remember them and enjoy them back now and then by thinking of them from time to time.
And if you would just like to financially support an artist who's work and ethics you admire, but you can't currently afford to do so, then don't worry, chances are, if you can't currently afford to buy their work, then they are probably going to be alright.
Peace and love. x
I've had coffee.

Has Banksy forgotten about your average Joe?, by Dr Plip on Apr 13, 2017 12:23:28 GMT 1, AND ANOTHER THING!!
Making as much money as you can from your art, for the least amount of effort possible, DOES NOT make you a bad person as an artist.
It means you don't have to stack shelves and you get to spend more time on beaches.

Should we attribute the other artists works to him too?
I mean without banksy they wouldn't have made those works. We as a result banksy is responsible and should be praised! Right?
I'm being sarcastic haha. But I could really see someone saying this.
Sure there are some nice individual works at the walled off. I sure hope you don't think the ducks at dismaland are though!

I get this and I agree 100% on any artist.
However banksy is not just a normal artist. His whole claim to success is opposite of an artist going out and starting a business with the hope of making millions. That was his intrigue, what made him different and what made him popular.
If we should now just view banksy as a normal artist making it big then fine but I can't see how that doesn't take away from his legacy.
When the stories are out there of all his done and pieces like this
www.google.com/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/daniellerahm/2013/10/22/banksy-the-20-million-graffiti-artist-who-doesnt-want-his-art-to-be-worth-anything/amp/
How can you ignore that and say he's just like any other artist and made it big. That tarnishes what banksy was.

Has Banksy forgotten about your average Joe?, by Brushstrokes 75 on Apr 13, 2017 18:48:24 GMT 1, Most of everything has already been said.
The only thing I wait from a guy like Banksy is that he keeps putting stuff up on the streets. For years after the betlehem show, nothing much was done apart from the annual release.
I personally got disappointed that a street artist especially the leading one kinda stopped putting stuff in the street and i decided to support other artists who kept playig the game.
Since then and the debacle that was the CYW release. Banksy did quite a few stints : NY, dismaland, new pieces dropping on walls from time to time. I'd rather have him putting forward stuff like that every couple years than the yearly print drop.
His art is about putting stuff out there not in our living room. Kudos to him that it's worth as much and he doesn't have to bother with that and he can make a living and have enough cash to pull of major projects.
Each their own but shep decided to take another trend but I believe for one that if Banksy would release a print every week maybe his images wouldn't as witty and powerful.
Nobody complains about not having a Blu drop for years now.
As long as we get to enjoy the view...
