Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by ben3486 on Apr 20, 2017 8:29:56 GMT 1, Cool thread but I think for every artist someone names, they should disclose if they own any works by that artist or not, for clarity. I do own a few Eine prints and its because I can manage to own prints by a long standing artist who has played a big part in the urban art world I decided to start the thread. It amazes me how affordable prints from a big artist like Ben are, and iconic ones too. I own a SCARY and I'm shocked that an iconic image like that is still available for only ยฃ300, yet invader is now commanding more than ten times that amount.
Agree with Pose. love his stuff. His stuff always looks stupidly well finished and high quality. Blek also hasnt blown up like he should of imo. Hes alomst the grandfather of stencil and street art now. Even Banksy comments in ETTGS that every time he has an idea he finds out Blek did it ten yeas earlier. Maybe its Bleks recent work thats affected it all? His earlier stuff is great! I dont own any Blek or Pose

Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by adewilliams on Apr 20, 2017 9:17:57 GMT 1, Swoon. In major collections and museums. Done more than most mentioned and been there from the beginning. Kept to her own style. Many of her projects have been epic. Amazing communicator, she does artists talks etc. Has an adoring fan base. And yes I own Swoon works.

Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by tobeannounced on Apr 20, 2017 10:22:57 GMT 1, I don't own any Pose or D'Face prints, but those are the two that in my opinion are the most valid choices, they are consistent in their style and unique enough in their imagery to stand out, but they'd need some serious PR work with a good story to get "out there".
When you look at artists like Hirst, Banksy, Invader and Kaws, they all have their own unique recognisable style and have had smart PR, my family, my friends, my co-workers know who these artists are, that's why they command such high prices, because regular people want to own them - but can't.
When people come to my house, they think my Blek piece is a Banksy... and that's why Blek (or any other stencil artist working in that lane) will never command the same prices as banksy, not saying he won't be out of reach over time, but Banksy will just be even more out of reach, that's why an Omega Seamaster will never cost as much as a Rolex Submariner :-D
And in my opinion Blek has just had terrible PR, being they guy that "fathered" Banksys style isn't exactly a very appealing storyline, most people don't care who Kool Herc is... even though "The Get Down" on Netflix might change that, maybe Blek just needs his own Netflix series... if Banksy doesn't beat him to it, hahaha.
Shepard Fairy aka. OBEY is more of a "brand" and I suspect he makes a TON of money that way. I've been wearing Obey clothing for a decade and almost everyone I know have a poster or something from him, as the output is huge. Over time I think his OG's and some of his prints will definetely rise beyond reach, but I think it'll be a steady incline and that it will always be in his favor to have some entry level work available to sell the brand forward to younger generations, my 12 year old is beginning to dig up all of my wifeys old OBEY t-shirts out of the closet, because the older kids at her school are telling her that OBEY is "swag", hahaha - in other words, he's a made man.
A couple of years ago I would definetely have said DRAN, JR and Takashi Murakami, but not so much now, mostly because of the relatively high entry level pricing at a time where owning art is a "thing".
Generally I just think this whole "limited print" thing is really a gift and a curse, on the one hand art is becoming more readily available, and a lot of artists are finding viable income, on the other hand, people are WAY over-hyping artists in hopes of making a quick turn-around as prints are being flipped at a 100% markup almost instantly, and then re-flipped at a 100% markup, and then... rinse and repeat... but in that way they are smothering the natural exposure of artists that never reach beyond the closed art circles, they aren't acknowledging that it's the "regular" folks that define the prices, not the other way around. You end up with a bunch of artists, that are out of reach for most, before they even know they want it, so the prices stagnate and you end up with a bunch of people that have semi-invested in prints that where already over-priced when they bought them.
Jay-Z has always been a huge success in my world, but it wasn't untill my mother mentioned him in a conversation, that I knew that he'd really made it... Last year I was in Paris with my kids, the 12 year old pointed to an Invader piece on the wall and said; "hey, that's Invader" and took a picture for snapchat.. 'nuff said... If you really want to know who will "blow up", you have to look outwards not inwards.

Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by docean on Apr 20, 2017 10:32:02 GMT 1, Full disclosure; I own both, so probably biased.
1) Pose. Totally unique style, instantly recognizable. Quality of the work is out of this world. In some major collections around the world, yet prices are still affordable.
2) Shepard Fairey. In a sense he has already blown up, even my mother knows all about Andre the Giant and Obama Hope poster was done by him. If we're talking prices, I suspect he will be like Dalรญ; massive body of work so prints will forever be somewhat affordable. But OGs and HPMs will appreciate rapidly should he ever stop.

Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by barryh on Apr 20, 2017 10:42:42 GMT 1, I think this scenes popularity came a decade late for Blek, the banksy thing is tiresome and hasnt really been relevant for a while now. His earlier works such as beggar, sheep and last tango.. are absolute classics and a must in any collection but he just doesnt seem to have progressed or even kept at that same level creatively.

Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by Born Again on Apr 20, 2017 10:55:21 GMT 1, I actually think Dolk was in the process of "Blowing up" until he had a run of arguably the worst print releases of his career Angels, Graffiti Remover, Chief and ending with Sleepwalker. Then to put his urban art career out if it's misery, he suddenly changed into an abstract modern artist over night and pretty much lost everyone aside form his diehard Norway supporters. Sad but ultimately he's doing what he wants which hopefully makes him happy. Completely agree with DOLK. Kunstrasen has the potential to take over what DOLK was doing. Already has had some good stuff and seems to continue to work on newer images. With a little work on his stencil detail and he could easily 'blow up' imo. I use to think Pejac didnt get the love he deserved but that is changing now. Still think Ernest Zacharevic and POSE are very talented for their styles and have a chance to blow up too.
These two have blown up haven't they? It's wicked hard to snap one of their pieces on release these days. Obviously resale isn't at invader price yet though
What about obey? He's blown up, no? For someone who releases a print to coincide with each meal of the day his resale prices are still fairly high (dependent on piece of course)
Rone in Australia is starting to blow up. I tried to buy a piece today and the set of 25, at $1500 each, sold out within 8 minutes.
Lefauves is blowing up - not urban though

Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by Wearology on Apr 20, 2017 13:17:23 GMT 1, I used to own a few pieces by Dolk and do not own anything by him at the moment. One day I will have a Girl With A Teddy Bear back on my wall. I would also like to add Grafter to this list. I own several pieces by him and believe his stencil skill set and creativity has the makings of a next level artist. He should explode one day.

Swoon
Did somebody honestly say "A couple of years ago... Murakami."?
"My Lonesome Cowboy" sold at auction in 2008 for $13.5 million and was selling his work (at auction) for a 1/2 million back in 2002-2003. He is a pretty entrenched blue chip artist.
His prints are affordable due to volume and original price point.

Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by Dahmer on Apr 20, 2017 14:15:41 GMT 1, I agree about Ben Eine, When you see canvas go for one tenth of an unsigned banksy print. I dont think hes struggeling though, i think hes doing ok from his art so i guess he hasnt a lot to complain about.
There are a few artists i collect stuff from which i truely beleive will blow up and can only go up in value but they need a little bit more time and a little bit more love from the board.
Kazland, Himbad to name a couple...

Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by Hairbland on Apr 20, 2017 14:48:41 GMT 1, Cool thread but I think for every artist someone names, they should disclose if they own any works by that artist or not, for clarity. Spot on. Otherwise we are all just sitting here hyping up our inventory... Except that the OP's thread is about those who didn't blow up that should have - the ones that looked like they'd lead the parade but instead the parade has passed them by.
Not about who might blow up and should.
Eine had his moment, will remain a slightly more than bit player when the history is written. I thought with his Brooklynite Gallery and the Bodega Show that RAE had a moment, but that seems to have passed.

Of course you are right, but just because someone hasn't blown up doesn't mean they won't. Same could have been applied to Invader a year ago, no?
My only point was that, naturally, we all have a tendency to be biased. That's all!
I personally don't see this happening for Eine, however much he deserves it, unless he branches out beyond letters of the alphabet to reach a different audience/infiltrate our collective consciousness a bit deeper.

Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by Sliding on the Walls on Apr 20, 2017 15:01:14 GMT 1, I guess you could use the argument of artists being one trick ponies for a few popular urban artists at the moment. For example Invader, Stik, Eine, Pure Evil, Nick Walker... I see works by these artists in particular and although I have an interest I don't ever think to myself 'wow they've really pushed the boat out with this one'.
I see artists like Faile having a higher profile in the future because I see them move in different directions, try new ideas, and keep evolving creatively which is a sign to me of somebody not simply riding on the wave of past success and releasing random letters or words, celebrities with drippy eyes, or urban landscapes covered in paint splats.
