Is FAILE over?, by bsimkin on Aug 10, 2017 18:01:14 GMT 1, Have they lost their mojo? After seeing their latest show in Detroit, I'd say, not one bit.
Is their work still desirable? Yes, but think they could release better prints. Seems often when the original gets adjusted for print (see their last release), they make decisions that diminish the beauty of the original. Hopefully some of their works on paper from their Detroit show will make it to print form. Would love the girl on the bike hitting a pothole or the woman on the horse.

Said to be opening sometime next Spring. I don't usually wet my pants over many things, but I will be driving out there for this in a heartbeat. Mojo restored.

The hype might not be the same it once was but most of their current (extensive) fan base doesn't care about that and are loyal collectors. Loyal until they can't even break even when re-selling. That seems to be the case as of late. NO ONE sane will spend $500 on something from an artist which they cannot at least get their money back. No one's making money collecting faile anymore. Past sales with auctions and ebay prove that.

The problem I have with Faile is that they are so prolific and they produce pieces all across the spectrum of the market from their 150 series to high priced originals. Point being, they will never be over it's just where the value is in whatever pieces one might collect. Yes, the market has plenty of their lower cost pieces available but the really good stuff ie: prints specially from before 2010 are pretty hard to find and will come at a premium. Additionally there is a difference between books and prints. I have some nice Failes hanging on my walls but I don't necessarily want any Faile books in my collection, not to say that books aren't cool they're just at a different place on the spectrum. Faile will never die.

Is FAILE over?, by magman on Aug 10, 2017 18:28:52 GMT 1, I have always loved Faile! Been a fan for years. I have several originals I would never sell. And I have had some awesome originals I did sell, and made a nice profit. (Some I wish I still had.) I got these damn books early in my collecting days when there wasn't a lot of Faile available at the time. I didn't know you could find stuff on eBay then. I framed them and thought it was a cool way to get some Faile up on the walls and it was, they look great and everyone who sees them loves them. It's just time to move things around in my collection. And I would like to not lose money on them...

Their new work is awesome, and I love picking up older choice pieces at great prices.

Is FAILE over?, by mose on Aug 10, 2017 19:31:18 GMT 1, In my opinion, stinky as it is, Faile have made a few good images but have largely been an artistic dead end. I've long thought(since, well the beginning of the forums) that their gimmicky coffee-spill prints, daub of acrylic paint, and small editions(though multiple editions with the same image) fueled the hype in the early urban art days. They were art for collectors of things, not for art collectors, if you will. Their support was shallow and always has been. Now, its not even wide to go along with the shallowness.
For me, there's never been much 'there' there. Though, they did nail it on their book of prints and originals. That is well worth searching out. Lots of information.

Is FAILE over?, by mose on Aug 10, 2017 19:35:44 GMT 1, Then why the hell am I having such a hard time selling the FAILE "Prints and Originals" artist edition books? They are extremely rare, signed, stamped, iconic images... What gives? That book is amazing. A very good work. But, 'special edition' books are tough sells almost regardless of artist or market. I learned the hard way with several that I thought were special and I appear to be the only one that thinks that way.
They are not 'book' enough to appeal to pure readers/researchers and will not be purchased by museums and libraries(I sell a decent amount of art books to both), and they are not 'art' enough for many collectors of objects, let alone art collectors.
Many also run in to display issues.
I wish you luck on the sale. it is a great book, and though the market is very narrow for something of that ilk, I'm sure you'll find someone who appreciates it.

Is FAILE over?, by silvermyn on Aug 11, 2017 9:53:06 GMT 1, For me, Faile's images lost something when AIKO left the collective. I still like their work but have not really liked it enough to buy or hang on the wall, regardless of value.
I used to have an original dog with an airplane evacuation card on the background; I believe one of the mods on here ended up owning it. The level of work that went into that piece was astonishing. I think the days of producing that level of work are probably gone for good.
