A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by moron on Oct 12, 2018 18:06:39 GMT 1, "Signed and dedicated on the reverse."
I can report that the dedication was, โThanks Joโ, with a heart and a CND symbol.
It may be a coincidence, but Banksy's publicist is Jo Brooks.

Yes, I can't see any other way of doing it. I would have to agree.. the video Banksy posted. the exacto knives seen in the beginning are at a bigger distance from each other as the shredded piece. Also, the video of it being shredded, it looks (obvious to me but hey maybe not) like the shredded piece was just fed through the bottom and the piece in the frame is a separate piece altogether (almost looks like a lcd screen).

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Coach on Oct 13, 2018 8:52:04 GMT 1, Nice to hear Gompertz perspective on it. This line is quite the statement: โThis is what I think about Love is in the Bin. It will come to be seen as one of the most significant artworks of the early 21st Century.โ -Gompertz Thanks for posting naughtyshorty
Indeed. Iโve got a lot of time for Gompertz, having heard him regularly on the radio. A glowing critique indeed.

This may sound a bit grandiose, but it is further validation of the fact that Banksy really is up there with the greats, and we arenโt just a bunch of deluded collectors

It's nice to see at least one person 'gets it'. Banksy is a performance artist as well as a graffiti artist. Many of his works are really performance art; the 'art' is in the reaction and the fallout from his works. It's not about how he did it or who was in on the act; it's about the act itself and the meaning of the act.

Here is a very simple way of making a shredder in a frame.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by moron on Oct 13, 2018 15:36:37 GMT 1, If people watch the video of the auction. Notice as soon as the hammer comes down, the auctioneer appears to press something underneath his rostrum. Some have suggested he pushes a button to start the shredding.
The stunt gained the publicity that Banksy desired and also generated the it's worth two million now mega high price that Banksy loves too.
I don't believe Sothebys guy was not in on it and how many people belive that the bids on this item were genuine, not shill bid up by Banksy and the buyer is involved with Banksy.
I hope that is not the case otherwise it looks like fraud and Banksy artifiacially fixing his prices. Which could backfire.
As for it's the best thing since Duchamp took a dump.
For some maybe. To me it's just a witty stunt and media backed the same way that celebrity side boob photos generate attention.

I've never taken much notice before but I would suggest that perhaps the auctioneer "pushes a button" after every lot sale. If he doesn't then I'm guessing somebody else does simply to set the bidding screen back to zero again in preparation for the next lot.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Rouen Cathedral on Oct 14, 2018 2:49:26 GMT 1, I've been going back and forth on this.
At first take it was brilliant. It didn't matter if it was six years in making or a recent scheme.
But if the painting didn't actually get damaged or Sotheby's was in on it. It just seems so gimmicky and loses something.
At this stage banksy shouldn't be a gimmick.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Laugh Now 10 on Oct 14, 2018 5:39:40 GMT 1, people are analyzing this scenario incorrectly. what Banksy accomplished needs to be viewed from the perspective of either someone who was in the auction house at the time of the shredding or someone who heard the news second hand, and for the first time, shortly thereafter. itโs too easy to over analyze it now. try to remember what it felt like when it happened. when you first heard about it or, even better, saw it happen. what shock and glory. and thatโs the feeling that rippled through the art world and popular culture. thatโs the feeling that resonated.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by d.r. perseus on Oct 14, 2018 6:10:09 GMT 1, It was fun. Bottom line. Interesting which I haven't heard anyone say given the analysis is within the frame is the original and the shredded piece therefore if the buyer so chose could have the intact piece removed.
How would PC react to that I wonder? We have to assume part of the viewable image in the frame is the half rolled intact image..is the shredded piece even a complete image requiring the two forever bound ?
Still fun to contemplate

Sure I get this and I think to an extent you may be right.
But if he worked directly with Sotheby's to pull this off or didn't actually damage the painting it reduces it to a cheap stunt.
I think banksy has proven his 'works' of recent aren't just cheap stunts. (boti, dismaland, walled off).

Even if there is a full image inside rolled up, it would have been set up that was as a possibly more reliable mechanism than shredding. I don't think a piece rolled up would be seen as the original. The original is the total of all the parts used, the frame, full image if it exists, the shredded part and the mechanism inside. If the owner choose to display separately they would have dismantled the original.
