I originally thought that the mechanism had failed when only half was shredded. I thought the fully shredded image would look better as it happened. Now that I look at it, it is more practical to display with half of the image still in the frame. It keeps the piece including the frame as one and allows the piece to be viewed more easily.
Also it offers a lot more opportunity for mockups and other art based on it where it allows for a transition between shredded and unshredded. Some examples have been seen already on this thread.

The picture was the last lot of the sale, so who knows. Was it a fake sale with Sothebys and the bidders in the room in on it?
